A unique city with a long and interesting history.
A unique city with a long and interesting history. Parts of the old city are still being renovated. The ancient cave structures that have been transformed into modern hotels, restaurants, shops and bars are worth seeing. Tourists are not allowed to bring cars into the old city and parking outside can be tricky. Also, there are a lot of steps and uneven pavement so comfortable shoes are a must. Not very accessible for those who have mobility issues.

We loved our Ape Tour of the city.
We loved our Ape Tour of the city. As seniors, we were not able to walk the hills and steps so the tour was a great overview of the history. Beautiful, historic city! Glad we got here.. then had to go to our next hotel and watch the James Bond movie that was filmed there!

Matera is the only place in the world where people can boast to be still living in the same houses of their ancestors of 9,000 years ago! Matera is the oldest continuously lived-in-settlements... in the World! Our yellow-washed stone house had a balcony to enjoy our cappuccino & roof-top terrace to gaze at the stars. It alone was another jewel of an experience. The town makes you feel as though you are a witness to Biblical times. You've seen it featured in Mel Gibson's "Passion of Christ" & Bond 007's "No Time to Die".

Matera is a step back in time.
Matera is a step back in time. The old town is built around the original old town, Sassi. Very easy to get around even tho it looks like a lot of stairs and ups and downs. Food great, people friendly. The local bread is amazing. Home made pasta in many restaurants is amazing.

A fantastic historic and mainly unspoiled place, great for just wandering around and taking in the atmosphere. Pretty hilly everywhere which we loved but not for everyone. Good walking shoes are a bonus as the worn stone you find everywhere can be a little slippy when going down hill or if it rains.
Unlike almost every other historic location in is not ruined by cars and traffic! Well, not yet. The weather in mid October was a dry 30 degrees at noon, it would be too hot for me in July but it was perfect for sight seeing and walking everywhere.
Brilliant location, a few hundred metres from Matera’s historic centre yet superbly quiet & calm with plenty of secure parking & a very pleasant pool to relax by. Extremely nice & plentiful breakfast served in a light & airy breakfast room - which you really appreciate after all Matera’s cave dwellings! Hotel staff very helpful, gave us town maps & good recommendations for restaurants within 5-10 minutes walk.
Our "cave room" was fantastic, truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Great views from our window and from the hotel premises. Also the best breakfast we had in Italy by quite a margin, with everything from newly baked foccacia to fresh fruits. The staff was helpful with informing us on where to walk to see the most of Matera. No luxury hotel, but everything we wanted from a hotel in Matera.
Can’t decide if the hotel design, scent, location or the service was more exceptional… It is a unique hotel, worth every effort to stay there. Their service is top notch. We had two bedrooms (4 adults) and everyone was so pampered and we felt relaxed, happy, woke up in beautiful bedding and ambience. Did I mention the scent of their rooms?? Fantastic stay, we will happily always go back!
The service at this hotel is excellent. We loved everyone from the front desk, to breakfast and the rooftop bar. The property is beautiful, well maintained and central to matera. We will definitely come back and maybe next time, they will have a fitness center (which was the only thing missing). A
Last thing: the property is extremely dog friendly! We could not be more grateful.
We were very impressed with the rooms quality and very pleased with the staff. We were able to park our car right in front of the hotel entrance which was very convenient. Free breakfast was very good. You can fine a highly rated restaurant right in the same building. Will definitely pick this property again if traveling to Matera in nearest future.
Pleasant and helpful reception in a beautifully designed room carved in stone and rock. Also smells clean and fantastic. Nice mattress, slept well, lobby is beautifully lit, making the parts carved in stone look biblical. Most importantly, however, the hotel captures the experience, one of the nicest hotels we stayed in on our Italy trip. Grade 9/10
If you are planning on staying in Matera you must stay here, the view from the hotel terrace is the best in Matera. Everything about this hotel was outstanding, from the communication before arrival & on arrival, help with dinner reservations, the room (we stayed in the cave room), breakfast selection and did I mention the view at breakfast !!
This hotel is like nowhere I've ever stayed before. It truly gave you the experience of Matera! Our upgraded room had wonderful views of the city. Breakfast was exceptional with the opportunity to sit on the veranda and overlook the city with a morning cappuccino. The suite we ended up in had a roof-top terrace and sweeping views of Matera.
I loved this hotel the staff were extremely helpful and friendly
The room was amazing with the rustic cave walls and we could see down into the caves below
The breakfast was brilliant and looked lovely laid out ready for the morning
It was nice having a little area to sit out side
The location was perfect for exploring Matera
The location was excellent and with a true "cave" feel. Friendly staff, nicely decorated and clean! We even had a gentleman making souvenirs on our doorstep!
Just a warning about steps - no problem for us, but could be difficult if you have heavy luggage. Matera is steps everywhere though, so cannot fault this hotel!
Staff were fantastic. Prior to arrival they sent us a message with detailed directions on how to get to the hotel - these directions were critical as we arrived at night and walked into Matera in the dark. Owner also gave us a map a suggested walking route to visit the city and it was perfect.
The hotel is in UNESKO protected area and cars are not allowed. The suite was great for two adults and a teenager. Large living room. Good size bedroom. The bathroom was rather small, but that is very common for Italy. The hosts were nice and accommodating. I would gladly stay there again.
Hotel owners & staff were very helpful - we arrived late due to flight cancellation and they helped us park the car and get us sorted. Nice breakfast. Great location. The cave room we had was very nice - good shower and lots of space. Bed was OK (for Italy !). Shared terrace outside.
Fantastic interior design of the top cave suite. Prime location at the foot of the Sassi (old matera). Terrace that would be lovely with warmer weather than we had in late February
The free circular bus stops right outside if you dont want to keep walking up the steep hills!!
This used to an high school which got converted to a hotel. It's weird and something you don't expect a hotel to look like. The location is great, only 500 meters from the old city of Matera so no parking issues are required.
Location! Cave-like rooms at the end of the gorge where Matera is perched. Outdoor terrace with incredible views you can enjoy at breakfast or at sunset with a drink. Hotel front desk staffers were very friendly and helpful.
Matera is a very beautiful place, and the hotel is part of that beauty. Centrally located, and all the charm and character that I had hoped for. Spacious room, quiet, warm and cozy - while bright and airy.
This was ideally located to explore Matera’s Sassi. The staff were very friendly. The hotel was very comfortable. Because it is based around the caves, it is very atmospheric.
