It is a small hotel, run by the family, who are kind, helpful and welcoming. Nothing seemed to be too much trouble for them. Our room was warm and quiet, which we had asked for, and the bathroom, though small, was well equipped and had plenty of hot water. The hotel was in walking distance of the station, the beach and the town centre. Santa Margherita itself is well located and within reach of Genova and other towns along the coast, such as Portofino and the Cinque Terre. It also has many excellent restaurants.

. The reception we received from the owner's son was an austere and unsmiling person. He was very controlling and unfriendly. Made us feel like we were checking into a prison. No hospitality skills. Hotel was very spartan. Price of room was high compared to value. The only positive note was Guiseppe the owner who was very nice and more hospitable.

Our room (no 6) was very very clean, but basic. It was enough for our 2 night stay. The location was brilliant, a 5 min walk to the seafront. After a long email conversation about parking and the woman telling us to get the train because it's easier, I spent a while trying to research where to park before we arrived, only to be told we were allowed to park at the front of the hotel, which was very nice of them, but they could have told me that when we booked and saved myself all that time researching. Guiseppe was always there, everywhere. I thought he was quite funny/quirky when we first met him, a bit of a character, but after a day or so, he was just too much. At breakfast, he practically stood next to our table whilst we eat the not so nice breakfast. Boiled eggs were undercooked, the cheese had hairs on, the yoghurt warm. After that, I couldn't stomach it on our second morning, but had a knock on our door at 10am, telling us it was 10am ie. Breakfast was finishing. We didn't ask for a wake up call, we didn't want breakfast. They were going to charge us 2 euros to use their budget iron, but they didn't in the end, they wanted to charge us 1 euro for a beach towel, we didn't need one. It was as if they were trying to recoup costs by charging for everything. The stairwell was a bit grotty and smelt of animals at times and it was very noisy from 7am onwards, the cleaning cupboard seemed to be located directly outside our door, which was being accessed from very early on, so don't expect a lie in.

A very kind family hosts the guests and they all are very helpful about what to do and activities around the location. The location of the hotel is great in silence and closeness to the city and train station. A wireless internet connection was a missing.

Location was good, about 10 min walk to port, beach, bus. Room, clean, reasonable. Breakfast provided. Can park car in hotel grounds, but can't move it for the whole duration of your stay.

The owners/staff were excellent and went out of their way to make us feel at home. The breakfast was great as was the service. We enjoyed our evening drinks on the quaint garden patio. It was within walking distance of the town/cafes/waterfront the beds definitely left something to be desired
