Le Grotte della Civita offers unique accommodations in the Sassi area of Matera. Rooms and suites are in large caves, and feature stone floors and antique furniture.
Score from 381 reviews Wonderful
The Palace Hotel is in central Matera, just a 5-minute walk from the ancient cave dwellings called The Sassi. The hotel offers free private parking.
Score from 154 reviews Very good
Situated in the heart of Sasso Caveoso in Matera, the hotel’s unique location and original structure, typically laid out in rows, provide panoramic views of characteristic city streets and courtyards....
Score from 116 reviews Wonderful
Set in a typical building, Casa Vetere is located in the Sassi di Matera, cave dwellings which are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Free WiFi is available throughout.
Score from 49 reviews Wonderful
I was upgraded to a junior suite so had lots of room and a massive bathroom with two sinks. The bed was plush and NOT two singles pushed together. Don't miss rooftop desk, and plan time to view the artwork in the rooms leading to the breakfast area. Staff all spoke English and arranged taxis when necessary. Breakfast doesn't have hot options, but did have boiled eggs.
Found it odd the tub walls were not tiled but just painted.
Superb location with splendid views over the Stassi. The hotel was palatial and it had a roof terrace with great views over the city.
Although there was secure parking in the courtyard the negotiations to get the car through the archway into it unscathed was daunting.
Good central location, staff friendly and very professional, lift to all floors, amazing art gallery and public areas with antique furniture and more artwork, comfortable and spacious room/suite, view from huge roof terrace.
A bit hard to find, poor Wi-Fi signal, breakfast coffee poor (most unusual in Italy).
Amazing view from our attractive room of Matera and the Sassi buildings. The palace is full of wonderful paintings and their museum is also worth visiting. Highly recommend this hotel.
Hard to find but given directions by a local who rang the hotel.
Gorgeous rooms, large, well renovated with luxurious feel to it. The staff is fantastic and very helpful. We had an emergency that we could not have solved without their help, especially Michela. Good wifi which is rare in that part of Italy.
the breakfast could have offered a hot selection but it was definitely adequate. Great breakfast room.
Views from room and upper terrace were amazing (we were in a junior suite facing the sassi); room very spacious, clean, and welcoming; good breakfast with fresh coffee of your choice; location for accessing historic old town and the sassi; complimentary water in room; helpful staff, especially Micheala.
Driving to property difficult; free parking quite a long walk away; wifi hardly worked in room or anywhere else except in main reception area.
Everything - our room was the nicest room we have ever stayed in! Also the best breakfast we had in our 7 days in Italy - This hotel has the most amazing viewing are up on the roof - don't miss that if your staying -
Nothing - everything perfect!
The Palazzo was amazing. Great location in the ancient city. We stayed in a suite which was spacious and comfortable. Defiantly worth the few extra Euros. Beautiful environment. The halls were covered in paintings & artworks. Loved it :)
There was no shower in our Ensuite. Just a hand held shower rose in the bath.
Excellent location wonderful palace beautiful city. We hope it is chosen capital of culture in 2010
it is like staying in a good museum
to find the place is such a nightmare - which then means after you give up and call them - you will pay the 20 Euro a night to park your car there since you are scared to move it (and I lived in Italy for 15 years)
Very tastefully furnished palazzo but with very modern bathroom etc
Everything was perfect , cleanses comfort of the room, very good breakfast and kindness of the staff.
Incredible position and a very beautiful building. A receptionist called Micheala who did everything she could to help us, sometimes even when off duty. She alone was worth the money.
The building is very noisy. Muzak was played very loudly in the corridors for the benefit only of hotel staff. The manager was both obsequious and unbelievably noisy, showing un-paying people around the hotel during siesta time and speaking VERY loudly. He also lied to me about something. The breakfast maid - only one - did not appear for 30 minutes during one morning's breakfast thus we had to go to find coffee-making equipment and make our own. If breakfast is until 10am then all breakfast food should be available until 10am and not removed before 10am to suit staff, not guests.
Our junior suite with a terrace was lovely, with plenty of room. The breakfast was excellent and the position was great for exploring Matera. We hired a private guide from the tourist info to show us the Sassi and it was worth every penny.
This hotel is very hard to find. The directions on booking.com are wrong. You can drive your car to the hotel and park in the hotel parking for 20 euros. Worth every penny!
We only have excellent comments on all points. We are looking forward to our next visit. This is a distinctive hotel and distinctively Italian with all of the comforts one wants in any part of the World.
Enormous rooms, fabulous first floor on way to breakfast room, good breakfast, helpful staff with realistic recommendations
Hard to find, especially arriving in the rain and dark
The entire staff were amazing. When we arrived the concierge greeted us with a glass of Prosecco and a light snack that was over-the-top. Meeting Mr Viceconte was even more special. He personally treated us to a private tour of his remarkable photo collection in the caves below the Palazzo which will be open to the public in December. Gracious, elegant and accommodating. What more could you ask for? Do not miss an opportunity to stay here.
The best most beautiful hotel I've ever stayed in....just amazing, which I could go back and stay for a year : ) The hotel felt like I was living in my own personal Palace. You walk through many beautifully painted rooms/ceilings on the way to our perfect room, can't say enough good words about this place
The facilities were amazing, breakfast delicious, cleanliness perfect. Great option for a fancy yet not expensive stay.
Attended a wedding while staying. Excellent experience. Great Food, Service. Staff very helpful.
The staff was very helpful, especially guiding us to the hotel, which was hard to find. Being in old Matera was enjoyable.
My wife and I stayed for one night in this extraordinary hotel which was the most elegant and impressive hotel we have stayed in for some time, including the 14 nights of this Italian holiday. The rooftop terrace takes your breath away, as did the walk through one large elegant room after another, just to get to the breakfast area. It feels more like a mini Palace than a hotel. Extremely central in the Massi of Matera, it's close to all the classic Matera sights which are well documented. There is some car parking but MUST be booked in advance, as there is none on the narrow street. 10 out of 10!
The Wi-Fi, like a lot of Italian hotel Wi-Fi was so poor we nearly lost another hotel booking because by the time the relevant page loaded on our iPad, the last room had gone!
The old world charm of being in a real palazzo, once in a life time experience , clean and walking distance to heart of town, fabulous room decor and overall dreamy, try it and you won't regret it
From the arrival to the departure the staff was simply extraordinary. My compliments go especially to Nino, who was always very kin and helpful. The room was perfect in every detail. I will choose this hotel in any upcoming stay at Matera, 100%!!
The staff couldn't have been more helpful. we were upgraded to a suite which was superb. Bed was very comfortable. breakfast excellent. The building was great. but the knock-out was the views over the sassi and the ravine.
very difficult to find. you can get there by car but no satnav will guide you there. Head for the cathedral and you'll get close.
