Il Casale offers apartments in local traditional style providing a luxurious, timeless taste of Tuscan country life, surrounded by pretty gardens, a large swimming pool and delightful views of Cortona.
Residence Il Casale offers you the rare opportunity to sample the lifestyle and opulence of the Renaissance nobility in eastern Tuscany.
This incredibly well-preserved 16th century establishment looks out towards the towers and churches that pierce the Cortona skyline. The holiday apartments are dominated by the original building with its stone tower, wide balcony and external staircase.
The setting is private and tranquil, with a wealth of flowering plants in the beautifully-kept garden and a large lawn with tables and chairs for al fresco dining. The large, state-of-the-art swimming pool (16x8 metres) is set by the garden and equipped with comfortable sunbeds, deck chairs, parasols and a shower.
The 10 apartments are tastefully and elegantly decorated; with ancient terracotta floor and ceiling tiles, and traditional fittings and furnishings dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. The overall effect is that of a warm and welcoming, timeless retreat where you can get away from the stresses of the 21st century.
You can enjoy a rich buffet breakfast 50 metres from Il Casale in the nearby premises of another hotel by the same management, with a daily extra charge (per person, on request).
The Resuidence is set on a hill 600 metres above sea level, which overlooks the whole Valdichiana as far as the crests of Monte Amiata. Its medieval buildings and lanes give provide the town with an evocative atmosphere.
The Basilica di Santa Margherita and the Franciscan Santuario delle Celle are comprised in an itinerary of arts and faith starting from the upper side of Cortona.
On the opposite direction, walking down Via Nazionale, once Ruga Piana the only level street in town, you can reach Piazza della Repubblica. Here are the Palazzo Comunale and Palazzo Casali, once mansion of a local noble family now seat of the Museo dell'Accademia Etrusca (a collection of Etruscan and Roman findings).
On the North side town, opposite to the Renaissance Cathedral, is the Museo Diocesano which features works of art by great local artists like Luca Signorelli and an Annunciation picture by Fra Angelico, one of his masterpieces.
Outside of town, at the foot of the hill, are the Meloni I and II del Sodo, Etruscan tumulus tombs of the 6th century b.C. Towards Foiano della Chiana you can visit the Abbey of Santa Maria a Farneta which, with its crypt, is one of the oldest Aretine Romanesque examples.
An event not to be missed is Cortonantiquaria, one of the most interesting national antique fairs. It takes place annually in the 18th century Palazzo Vagnotti and Palazzo Casali (from the last Saturday of August to the second Sunday of September).
Final cleaning is mandatory and comes at extra costs per person. Heating/Air conditioning is available on request at extra costs per day per apartment;
air conditioning is compulsory from 28 June to 30 August.
