first of all, the owner was made me upset. when i arrived at hotel and tried check in, i had to wait standing alone holdind my huge backpack in the middle of restaurant. no one try helping me to check in until i call again owner during over 15 minutes. even many guests who eating in there staring at me. (because check in system is only available in the restaurant) second, the casa room was very cold so i caught a cold.
The location was splendid, suite (Urania ) was spacious and pleasingly aesthetic , with a lovely tiled bathroom complete with bath, shower, bidet and towel heater etc . Kitchen facilities for self catering . The restaurant was next door. I would certainly return to this hotel with its helpful staff. We have found that paying extra for kitchen facilities more than justifies the price.
A knife or two would have been useful and maybe a cutting board for slicing vegetables would have completed the kitchen facilities.
I enjoyed every aspect of my recent stay at this lovely hotel set amongst the sassi of Matera. From the décor of the rooms situated in the caves, to the breakfast and the friendly staff, my experience was a wonderful one!

Hotel was nice and clean. Excellent location. Restaurant was excellent, food was delicious.
The smell of mold was too overwhelming for all of us and it was very musky and too much moisture.
The fact that it was easy to find in such a old town and it's closeness to exploring the Sassi Caveoso area
Unfortunately the cave room is a bit stuffy but this is only because of the type of rock the caves are built in

Love, love, love this place. I can't imagine staying in any other place in Matera. The staff is wonderful, location is great, their restaurant is excellent. The best place to stay in Matera.
What's not to like!
Set right in the Sassi with excellent views just outside the hotel. Perfect for photos and exploration. Free carpark is just 30m away (very privilege since vehicle entry into Sassi is restricted). Authentic cave apartment done up very well. It's humid (as expected of caves) but with the heater on, it's ok.
No wifi signal in our apartment, had to go to the reception. Extremely minimal English by owner/manager. He didn't seem too happy when we asked one too many questions.
Amusingly, we actually received the best service from the hotel dog who greeted us and literally showed us to the reception desk. If only the staff could be like the dog then the place would be a total success. We stayed at several good hotels while in Matera but this is not one.
Very disappointing experience with 1 out of 10 customer service. Here are my reasons: - Reception is a desk in the corner of the restaurant and usually unattended. I had to stand and wait to check-in, check-out and enquiries. - Hotel room dark and dirty with old furniture and worn out rug. Room 53 was a 'Cave' style room but very damp atmosphere with odour from the bare rock. The walls need to be sealed to stop dust/smell. I visited another good hotel (beginning with 'Bas') and their cave rooms were excellent. - Shower curtain was broken (but also highly unusual/unusable wrap-around type which clung to my body during the shower) - Breakfast: We were sure we would receive lousy service at breakfast. When I went at 9.30am the unfriendly waitress was hoovering the floor and said 'wait' when I asked for breakfast and showed our room key. She shouted 'Vinc----o' and then switched the hoover back on and did not seat us. Stunned by her ignorance! - The staff speak no English but that's not usually a problem as Check-in, Check-out, Breakfast can usually be done in any language with minimum fuss. Instead of simply speaking in Italian to us they were cold, ignorant and silent. My advice to the hotel would be: - Improve your attitude and create an atmosphere where people want to return again - Renovate your rooms immediately; paint walls off-white, renew the furniture and light fittings. - Equip the kitchen with basics such as Salt, Pepper, Sugar, Oil and create a preparation space.
