The rooms are a bit over priced, and if you want a cave room, or a room with a view, be sure and specify it in your booking. Our first stay was in a cave room off season, and it had a private patio with a stunning view. The price was very reasonable. Our second vist we paid more for a suite - and it had an almost hidden entrance which was dark with no view. The kind girl at reception was very accommodating and moved us to a non cave suite (not as charmimg as the caves) right next to the reception area. We took it because it had a tiny patio with a view. However the air conditioning worked very poorly, and it was 90+ degrees in August. I was up at 2:30 am taking a cool shower, it was so uncomfortable in the room. And we paid more for this experience - which was disappointing - than our first visit. So... Be specific about your expectations when you book, and be sure and take into account the weather. Matera is not user friendly at 90+!
The rooms are beautiful but vary greatly. Some are up high with patios and views of the city. Some are dark, lower, and have no view at all. Generally they are all beautifully designed, but some are cave rooms and some are not. We have stayed twice, once in a normal double room and once in a jr suite. Both rooms were stunning. The breakfast is amazing, very upscale and a large selection in a stunning cave dining room. Perfect location in matera, immediately adjacent to the main piazza downtown. The staff is very friendly and accommodating.
