This hotel provides a unique experience staying in rooms which have been converted from the 'sassi' (caves) which have provided accommodation in Matera for centuries. The staff werre amongst the best we experienced in Italy - helpful and friendly. The location of the hotel - overlooking La Gravina ravine is spectacular. Having a candle-lit bath in a cave was one of the best memories of my holiday. Nothing - but it would have been nice to get a drink at the hotel. Only breakfasts are provided.

Incredible experience sleeping in a cave in the Sassi area of Matera; not just a cave but a luxury hotelroom in a cave. Very private, romantic and cozy place with an amazing view. A very friendly and helpful staff who gave us a map and tips on the city. So nice to have breakfast in a rock church.

We considered our stay to be the highlight of our trip- Matera is amazing, the old town and the lovely new town. The outlook was beautiful, looking down over the valley and across to the ancient caves; and our cave was glorious!! All the details have been lovingly and tastefully thought out; the beds were comfy and we loved the silence! Thanks to the friendly staff and the Chef (breakfast was wonderful)! All in all it was a magical experience!!! Nothing- all wonderful

We booked this hotel to experience the Sassi Unesco site! The simplicity of the cabe rooms is realistic and very atmospheric. Breakfast was included and consisted of locally produced buffet style. Not entirely to our taste, but adequate. Staff were lovely and very welcoming making it a really nice stay. Toilet facilities are not very private but that is being really picky!

We booked this hotel because we felt we wanted/needed something different. The Albergo Sextantio does not conform to usual hotel categories but we got exactly what we expected - a hotel that fitted into a rock city. The furnishings were minimal and a tasteful mix of the very old (the table, benches, doors etc. from it's monastic history) and the very new and ultra modern plain white bathroom fittings etc.. The subdued lighting and candles certainly added to the admosphere of our 'cave' - as our room was described - and the fruit and water provided in the room were also extremely welcome as were the oils for the bath. The breakfast table, situated in the old church, had something for everyone but if you did not like what was on offer the staff were willing to provide options. In fact, we found the staff to be extremely friendly and accommodating at all times. If you want a plush hotel with all the trimmings this is not for you but if you are open to a different experience you're in for a treat. One note of caution, the hotel advises to take minimal luggage and as the entrance is up, and down, stone steps (obviously no lift) we would recommend that you take note of this suggestion.

Très bel emplacement, chambres magnifiques et bien agencées, dans un cadre exceptionnel (les grottes de Matera) avec une vue somptueuse, très bon petit-déjeuner. L'absence de douche (des baignoires design à la place) qui peut déplaire à certains.

Fantastic place, totaly different to anything else we have experienced!! We have stayed at many nice places all over the world but this was one of the most memorable hotels we have seen. The sophisticated and beautiful design also gave very romantic impression. The athmosphere gave a added value to our stay! We warmly recommend it!

Absolutely fabulous! The simplicity of the white linen and luxurious bath against the actual cave - stunning. The views over the ravine - breathtaking. The absolute quiet with the sound of cowbells at dusk, the breakfast with all the gourmet goodies - loved it all. It was like being transported into another world.

Very welcoming hotel, fantastic setting and food at breakfast great position to explore the town, not to mention the charm of staying in a de luxe cave!!! Impossibly difficult to find, one very small sign that is very 'discreet' and low-key. Be warned!

Did a very good job at keeping to the detail and the aspect of preservation. Was done with the thought ofkeeping to the originality of the area, and yet providing the comforts of a good hotel. The breakfast could be improved, many sweet cakes and no substance
