Breakfast was slim pickings - cold boiled eggs, bread and preserves and a selection of cakes. Not really enough to excite me, but wasn't a huge deal as hotel was great value so really happy to step into town for a greater choice.
Pillows were quite hard - not sure if this is just typical of the area, but I found it made sleeping a little uncomfortable. I'm sure if I'd said something they would have changed them, but I didn't want to cause a fuss - they were all so lovely and it seemed quite trivial!
Excellent location, stunning views over the sea and just far enough away from town to make you feel secluded, yet you are only minutes away from the action! Great selection of restaurants in town, although heavy emphasis on seafood (it is an island after all!). The best views in town are from Umberto's own restaurant - book in advance and be there for sunset. Absolutely stunning to watch the sun from Umberto's balcony!
Staff were delightful. They didn't speak very much English, but none in Forio did and we actually rather enjoyed it! Everyday we picked up a few essential words of Italian, and after 4 days we knew much more of the local language than in any other holiday I've been on in Italy.
It's worth spending a night in Ischia Porto, but very touristy, and much more like a typical tourist destination - strips of restaurants all selling the same thing and waiters stood outside competing for business. We enjoyed an evening there but were glad we chose Forio for our main stay!
Taxi's are very expensive on the island (€30 for the 5 miles from Porto to Forio) so make sure you get the Hydrofoil from Beverello in Naples all the way to Forio, rather than getting off at Porto. It only takes 10 minutes longer and the difference in price is a cpl of Euros. We intended to do this but our taxi driver from Naples airport ignored our request to go to Beverello and took us to the other port in Naples which meant we had to get a ferry to Porto and an expensive taxi to Forio. The taxi driver in Naples also charged us €60 front he airport (about 20mins) which we later learned was a complete con as there is a fixed rate from the airport of €23! Anyway, these are just things to be aware of, and had no bearing on how much we enjoyed our stay in Umberto, which was delightful!
They have a lovely little sun terrace, with direct access into the sea, which is what they refer to as their swimming pool.
