Owner spoke excellent English, good location for sightseeing, traditional atmosphere/house/garden was lovely. Quiet street.

Run down, unclean! Found hair in our sheets and all around our room, I don't think they changed our futon sheets between guests. Quite a bad bed bug infestation- didn't realize they were bb's until the bites showed up a week later and completely covered my arms. Wifi constantly dropped out, may as well have had no wifi at all. For the same money I could have had a lovely clean hotel room with working Internet and comfort, but I had already paid in advance and was traveling on a budget so I couldn't leave. Was very disappointed. :( with tlc and pest control this place would be amazing but I think the owners simply don't care anymore.

If you want to experience a stay in a traditional Japanese inn then this is for you. Lovely courtyard and tatami mat room with paper sliding doors. I found owner helpful and informative. If you want gushing customer service and top class facilities then you should look elsewhere.

The Beastly Bed Bugs! I really suffered while my husband didn't get one bite. Unfortunately, I didn't realise they were bed bug bites until I'd left the inn or I would have mentioned it to the owner. I had blamed Mosquitos initially but anyone who suffers with them really knows about it!

The garden. The location, a bit ex centred but easy access with bus to all major sites

Old facilities not clean at all. We prefer to go to the public baths to have a shower. The kitchen is very austere

The location close to the subway line makes getting there easy. Also good bus lines close by can take you most places easily.

Great owner, very friendly, he even prepared an info about the place in my language. And the small garden with stone lanterns is amazing :)

In some rooms you can't use wi-fi, you have to sit in the corridor.

I am a regular visitor to Kyoto, and have stayed at Aoi So as a solo traveller on several occasions. Overall, it's a perfectly decent place to stay if you just want an inexpensive place to sleep in Kyoto and don't care if it's a little funky and not Western hotel style. The house is Japanese style, with a pretty garden. Rooms have tatami mats and futons. It's not luxurious, but it's a fine place if you just want to sleep. After a torturous experience with bedbugs at another ryokan in Kyoto, the best thing I can say about this place is that I have never been bitten by a bed bug in my 5 or 6 stays there. That is one thing you should avoid, at all costs. They have bike parking too. Aoiso will always be my first cheap, decent, ryokan, choice but it books up quickly at peak tourist times.

Walls are thin and sometimes other guests are noisy, but most are pretty respectful. You might have to wait to use the shower, though I never have. Wifi is not available in the rooms, but I was told I could hook up in the lobby/hallway. Still didn't work for me. Free wifi is still mysteriously difficult to obtain in Japan. Location is a bit to the north, so not central, but still in the valley and close to some nice things. Near a subway station. Bikeable, and near the Kamo River. Given the other places I've stayed in in Kyoto, I can't really say anything bad about this place at all.

Place was alright a little dirty but location from subway was huge plus. The wifi doesn't reach all the rooms but its free. For the price not a bad deal for someone just lookibg for a place to crash

The owner lack of friendliness. Despite his broken english, he never reply our greeting in japanese even if we greet him in japanese. Plus he never make any smile. As Japan is trying to brand thier country with[Omotenashi]aka friendliness, we quarantee that he didnt qualify for that. As for the room is it way to small for three people. The corridor is too narrow, the ceiling also too low. The location also not confortable as it is facing a narrow road that is way too quiet at night. Not to mention the entrance time limit at night.

-beautiful garden in the center of the guesthouse

-10000¥ per Night is top extensive for the room. -Not to recommend during winter, because the room is poorly isolated.

The staff was very nice. Every night when we cam home late the bad would be made up the heat would be on and the room would feel comfy and just right. My wife deemed the futons cuddle palace.
