The owners were so nice and helpful. Breakfast was delicious, and they brought tea and small desserts in the evenings! The rental is quiet and relaxing.
Far from town, but the owners were willing and available to drive me into town.
We were collected from the ferry terminal by the owner which was very helpful as the hotel is quite a distance from the port. This is an annexe of 3 rooms in the owners garden and is a traditional wooden chalet with traditional furnishing and tatami matting etc. It is very clean and has the usual Japanese "wet" bathroom with shower & deep bath, and good size living area/bedroom in each room. Our host took us to the Tourist office to help us claim a Tourist board subsidy for island visitors. A very welcome y3000 per head per night! After the rather expensive ferry journey this was very welcome but is not I suppose going to be a permanent feature! There is a barbeque area outside the chalet, which would have been very nice but the weather meant we didn't get to use it, or the spectacular beach which was nearly walkable from the hotel, but with a typhoon in the South of Japan, it was too rough and dangerous to use it with 3-4m storm swells pounding in and frequent heavy rain. Our host very kindly ferried us around the island for free, and was very keen to show us the local sites. He also recommended local restaurants and told us of a local festival. The shell museum was a nice place to visit with the bad weather but the Volcano museum is mostly displays in Japanese. With suitable transport everything on the island is very accessible and a fit person could easily get all the wy round the island on a bicycle in a day. The traffic is very light, and the roads are well maintained. Had we not been "recuperating" from a trek up Fuji a few days before we would probably have done this and "done" the Mt Mishima" trek, though when the weather closes in there isn't much of a view.
It is expensive to use the local buses, and it would have been better to get a Hire car straight away on arrival at the ferry port. We tried the next day and all the cars were gone. Maybe book in advance. Our plan to get bicycles was thwarted by the weather. The activities available are very dependent on good weather and if you cant go to the beach or trek the volcano, this is an island with rather limited activity. The beach and public bathing area at Okata was the only "safe " beach
The very helpful and friendly couple that run the place- they will give you a ride anywhere you wish, and they even took me to a very nice restaurant in the evening. The garden and courtyard adjoining the property is beautiful.
Location- a bit hard to find without Maps or GPS as the turn-off is a very minor unmarked street, and the inn itself is a bit in a forested up-hill area. You can spot some indigenous wildlife though, if you're lucky!
Super nice original Japanese style room, very clean and nice atmosphere. Far away from every sign of civilization - but the hotel owners drove me by car everywhere - even to the 5:20 am ferry. So nice!
Very nice Japenese style rooms, very clean and comfortable. Quite and peaceful.
A bit out of the way
Staff was extremely friendly and even drove me back to the port. Nice and clean accommodations.
