We found about Fukuzumiro in Lonely Planet and decided to give it a try in order to escape from the more crowded cities in our 2 weeks visit to Japan. We stayed in Fukuzumiro two nights in a weekend last may and, simple put, the best experience of our trip. Short of words to exprese what an awesome time we had, from the truly japanese cuisine, hot thermal "onsen" and the friendly staff, all was 100% perfect. 5 min walk from Hakone-Yumoto, it is a perfect place to start one of the day trips to Mount Fuji offered in town. Do yourself a favour and get to this marvelous "ryokan".

From the moment we arrived at Fukuzumiro, we experienced Japanese culture, charm, politeness, hospitality & warmth. The building was a traditional wooden ryokan, which was actually far larger inside than it at first appeared. It was raining when we arrived, the wheels of our cases were wiped and they were taken to our room. We were welcomed with Japanese tea & sweet cakes. Our room was truly authentic, traditional Japanese ryokan style & it overlooked the river; we could have been travellers in a bygone age. The Onsen bath was superb; relaxing in it before dinner was the perfect end to each day. We wanted to eat Japanese food; the quality of dinners and breakfasts was gourmet & the quantity much more than we would normally eat. We ate local produce, many varieties of fish as well as the most succulent beef, for example. We enjoyed sleeping in futons on the floor in the traditional manner. They were laid out for us after dinner; in the mornings the futons were cleared away and the room rearranged for breakfast. Although many other people were staying there, we heard no noise in our room other than that of the gently flowing river. All the staff were very polite, welcoming and friendly.

Very traditional Ryokan ( old style) Japanese Onsen (hot spring) hotel with rice paper screens nad futon beds. Our room had agreat view of a fast flowing river.Traditional food was served in our room by a very pleasant lady in traditional Japanese costume. Although the hot baths were extensive there was a little mould around but this is difficult to avoid in permanently wet warm conditions.

Amazing experience, very typical design, nice friendly staff. Our room was just perfect facing the river. Food was good as well. Perfect for 1-2 nights stay to have an authentic ryokan experience. Onsen facilities are not really interesting.

Very friendly staff. Huge room compared to other ryokan, heck, compared to western hotel it was big! Our room was 2nd floor, on the river and it was peaceful white noise. Beautiful building, little nooks with gardens everywhere. Private bath facility was nice, just big enough tub for 2. Old pine tree bath was incredible, hot spring water was hot (63 c!) but felt nice to relax. We had Japanese breakfast and dinner, food was all incredible. Dinner was huge, food just kept coming! Not a far walk from Hakone Yumoto Station even with big luggage. Would definitely stay again. The most expensive place we stayed, spoke almost no english but still tried to be helpful with directions.

The real Japanese experience. Sleeping in a beautiful room next to a lovely river on traditional bedding and eating Japanese foods. The walk uphill to the station.

Our experience with Fukuzumiro was excellent, it started even before we embarked on our trip. Fukuzumiro staff made sure we're going to be taken care of during our stay and communicated with us with emails early on, several days after the booking was confirmed. We only stayed for one night, but the ryokan hostess, the onsen, the kaiseki course, breakfast, and overall service were excellent. I wish we could've stayed longer because it's fantastic! Location is indeed 10-minute walk from Hakone Yumoto station, but it's very manageable, even if you have luggage(s) to carry. No outdoor onsen baths.

The room Japanese style, the dinner and the onsen relaxing bath. The strict check out at 10:00 and no flexibility on wake up at 8:00 and breakfast at 8:30, quite hard with jet lag from Europe

We stayed he 2 nights on our honeymoon and loved it. It has a real old Japan feel to it. Couldn't keep me out of the onsen. All rooms have great history to them, prime minester's and writers staying in this place. Amazing gardens and water throughout, a real highlight to our trip.

Great onsen, we were to only ones using it for the time we were there so pretty much was a private onsen for me and 2 mates. The food was great, really loved it. A bit remote, nothing else to do at the station.

The staffs particularly the lady who looked after us were so excellent. The hotel might be a bit on the older side but well maintained and give you authentic Japanese feeling. The quality of overall service, onsen and food mean we definitely are coming back here when there's a chance. The staffs are trying hard but still cannot communicate well in English though I don't think this is a major downside. There's only one private bath and cannot be reserved so you need to time it quite well or need to queue up if you would prefer private bath with your family. Shared restroom might not be ideal but very clean and the limited number of room and guests mean you would not have so much trouble.

The stay was easily one of my top hotel stays ever. A tad expensive, but totally worth it. The hotel meshes well with the location, partially built around small wooded areas and ponds. It had a very open feel to it. Might be difficult for someone unable to speak Japanese, however, as I'm not sure if any of the staff speaks anything else. I don't, however, consider that a bad thing as it added to the authentic feel. We opted to have dinner in house, and it was both delicious and huge. I could barely eat everything, and I have a pretty large appetite.
