We had a very relaxing stay here. Very easy to find; less than 10 minutes walk from the station with our cases down a footpath. Lovely large room looking out on the river, the whole place just oozes atmosphere. The meals both breakfast and dinner were spectacular multi and we enjoyed the onsen. Male and female bathe separately, but there's also a private bath where we could bathe together. With such good buses and trains the Hakone National Park is very easily accessible from here. A very restful stay after the liveliness of Tokyo.
The Ryokan is right on a very busy road. But once inside this melted away and any distant traffic noise was drowned out by the sound of the river.
The atmosphere is truly authentic and the experience is unique. Highly recommend to would-be traveller!
Staying at this traditional inn was an amazing experience, and the highlight of our trip. The multiple course kaiseki dinner and breakfast were both absolutely delicious, and staying here was worth every penny. Kanako, our attendant, was super kind, friendly, and spoke great English. Highly recommended!
very large and beatiful building with many pretty and carefully tended to spots. The meals are excellent and you get a lot of quite diverse typical japanese food. The staff is superfriendly and helpful and tend to your every need.
We loved our maid who served us thought out whole dinner and breakfast. She couldn't speak English but we managed to understand her. She is a very lovely lady.
I wish there were some English signs outside of Hotel.
Experience traditional ryokan stay with faultless and very helpful service, excellent food and beautiful onsen including private "family" onsen room
no en-suite bathrooms, but only just down the hall; Wi-Fi only really usable in front entrance hall
The staff is very friendly and was able to speak enough English to make us feel very comfortable. Our room was awesome! We had windows opening out to the gorgeous, flowing river only about 10 meters away. We absolutely loved it! The food was very good, with so many different traditional Japanese dishes to try. We were very full after both meals. The staff continued to care for us the entire time we were there. Very friendly and attentive. We were sad to leave.
Nothing. We had a wonderful time and would happily stay here again.
Loved the very traditional feel and atmosphere of the place - an old house right on the banks of a tumbling stream, beautiful wooden floors, carp ponds, tatami mats, great onsen. Staff were unfailingly courteous and solicitous of our welfare. Traditional Japanese breakfast was a treat but not for the faint hearted.
Located on a bend in the main road so traffic noise sometimes intruded. Sleeping on the floor is not comfortable. We rented the one room with a private bath. Although really a spacious suite, this smelled overpoweringly of damp.
Great service, comfortable room, good selection of food, decent onsen, very good location for Hakone region. Also an unforgettable/authentic experience.
Building shows its age (it is more than 100 years old). Impossible to sleep without eye mask after dawn. Our food preference was asked but totally ignored. Strange smell in the room.
the onsen, dinner and breakfast. right beneath a big onsen place and a mountain shrine (very nice one). spacious rooms, original japanese style. other visitors are nice too.
A o ba son is very helpful and hotel is perfect japenese style.
An amazing authentic experience staying in a traditional Japanese ryokan. The hot spring baths were great, and I often had bathing area to myself. Dinner in the room was absolutely sublime, beautifully presented and so delicious.
Toilets weren't very well lit.
We had such a pleasant stay. We opted for a river view room, which was comfortable and relaxing. Our attendant was absolutely wonderful; she made sure that we had everything we wanted and was very kind. The food was wonderful, and the baths were just what we needed to rest our travel weary bones. I would definitely return.
Perfect Japanese experience!
It's a bit hard to find, try to get a cab.
It was such a neat and cultural experience for the entire family. Food was exquisite.
Great environment, very friendly staff, great baths
Nice atmosphere far away from the hustle and buslte of Tokyo. River setting and view from room is amazing despite the hotel being at a main street as all rooms face to the back over the river. It's a very traditional and very quiet place with no common room, all food being served in your room and bathrooms are public baths as they used to be hundrets of years ago. There is a private bath that can be used with a partner without booking. The true Japan experience can be found here.
It was all rather austere - so come open minded and conscious of what you booked. It is a traditional ryokan, not one of the "made up ones" for western tourists. Only the receptionist speaks a little English so you manage to check in & out, but the attendees do not speak any English which can be difficult especially if you have any dietary requirements. For us it was just trial and error - which then actually means it was a very pricy meal. You pretty much have to have dinner and breakfast there as there is almost nowhere else to go, the "village" is about a 10 minute walk away and is tiny. The experience was exciting though. It was our first (and only truly traditional) ryokan on our trip which was probably good as we were open minded and focussed on the experience, rather than luxury - e.g. no shower available for women in the morning (only in the evening as the bathrooms swap over depending on times between men and women and only one has showers in addition to the public hot bath).
Historical building and convinient approach. The food was very nice. Because of famous place, so many foreigner crowded.
It is very difficult but, I request the private toilet.
Really great hotel! I loved the place and especially the lady, Honda, who took care of me during the three days I stayed in this hotel. The Onsen were great as well! Really really nice hotel with very friendly people who spoke very well English. Als the suggestion to travel around were great.
It would have been nice to know on forehand where the hotel is located. It's close to several stations, but difficult to find where it exactly is.
I booked a single room with HB. The Japanese-style dinner and breakfast served by the hotel were wonderful. The onsen is not big but clean and hot. The building is quite a traditional one with more than 100 year history and is located just to a small river. Staying there one night was value-for-money!
As the building is old, there is no air-conditioner in my room. But, luckily, it was very cool in the night I stayed there. And as the building was just near a small river, there are lots of insects in my room. No wifi in every room but in lobby.
A wonderful taste of traditional Japan. Courteous staff attentive to your every need. The onsen baths are lovely. Food was delicious. Highly, highly, highly recommended.
The Food is great. The place is so convenient.
Good food, super friendly staff and great view outside
Hot bath area had a lot of bugs (not sure if that's normal due to the surrounding nature?) bathroom could be cleaner, one of the stalls smelled bad.
Great experience! Absolutely amazing! The house maid for our room especially was wonderful. She was so helpful and kind, we loved her.
