The staffs are very welcoming and friendly. I stayed in the Japanese style room, very comfy and good experience with it. Good location to Gion district & a few tourist attractions. Bus access is good enough to get to other places like Kinkakuji. In overall, very very pleasant with the stay at Gion Maifukan!

A friend of ours who met us in Kyoto wasn't allowed to stay in the suite past 10:30pm; I'm not sure if this is a local standard but it was a shame to make him leave so early in the evening.
Impeccable room laid out in traditional Japanese style - 10-tatami living room plus double bedroom with more than enough room for the three of us. Close to tons of shrines and restaurants. Extremely helpful staff.

the staff was amazing and this was exactly what we were looking for -- traditional Japan feel but with the comforts of home. Great location and overall a great pick!

This is very minor. There seemed to be miscommunications with the late night receptionist. We were asking if breakfast could be walk-in, just in case we don't have time to look for places to eat elsewhere on certain days. She said yes. But one day, the kitchen staff was surprised that we didnt advance-book and just walked in for breakfast. Thankfully, the kitchen manager gladly accommodated.
We loved the comfortable accommodations and its location in a nice district, where there's a lot to see. Plus the nearest bus stop to most of our destinations was just behind the block! Staff was extremely helpful. They kept and dried our wet umbrellas for us one rainy day. And upon checkout the receptionist went out of her way to help us locate the local Night Bus lounge where we were going, printing out a better Google map to communicate it to the taxi driver.

The staff is unbelievable here. All are friendly, professional, and do things I'd never thought of in my life (e.g. going to the umbrella rack and drying your umbrella, panel by panel). The facilities are good. The location is perfect. This area is where you want to stay in Kyoto, and if I returned, I'd be staying here again.

The amount of effort the staff went to to keep us happy and show us what to visit

Expensive but this is Japan No breakfast in hotel (but accessible by foot or bakery not far away)
Location is perfect, within walkable distance of many sites and also close to shops and to bus station Big apartment on 4th floor with 2 real beds in one room and futon beds in the living room (and a good view) Staff very helping for bus tickets, restaurants, luggage storage

Loved the location in the heart of Gion. The staff were fantastic, polite, friendly and helpful.

Traditional room was perfect! Staff provided the best map and ramen eatery suggestion. Hot tea ever ready in room.

What didn't I like. This is hands down the nicest place you can stay in Gion, Kyoto. The staff is absolutely amazing, kind, and will help you find what you are looking for in Gion. The rooms are spotless, well maintained, and gorgeous. I can probably write 4 pages on how amazing this place is, but you should really just book now. Price is not an issue.

staff was very friendly and helpful, breakfast was excellent. They even sent a nice hand written card for our honeymoon. Very sweet!! Will definitely stay in this hotel again if we visit Kyoto in the future.

I expected this ryokan to be something special because of the reviews and high price but was disappointed by the uncomfortable bed and average breakfast.
The rooms were very spacious and the location was good.

Superb staff. Couldn't have been more helpful.

We spent two nights of our honeymoon in Gion Maifukan. The location is perfect for exploring the eastern side of Kyoto. Even for Japanese standards, the service from the staff is very polite and thoughtful.

Very friendly staff

The map we could find from web is not helpful and not easy to find the hotel. We found that the map in our room is even more clear that it is suggested to post on the web for reference. No meal is included.
The staffs are very helpful, nice and always have big smile. They lent us umbrella when outside is having heavy rain. We had warm welcome from the staffs when ever we arrive or go out from the hotel. The room are very spacious, clean and quiet. No smell of tabacco. We feel like at hotel. Very relax. It's easy to travel around, bus stop is nearby. It's excellent, out of my expectation. I would absolutely stay in this hotel if I visit Kyoto.

The location in Gion/Higashyama area is unbeatable! Can walk to many shrines/temples and shopping & restaurants just ouside your door. Very kind and helpful staff! Try the Japanese style room - very unique!

Maybe might be better if they had a more detailed map on how to get there from public transport. We wandered off to the residential area but eventually found the place. Still, plus point for me because I got to see the local residents' houses. :)
We got the Japanese-style room and it was super awesome! It was quite roomier from what I expected and came with all the nice amenities. Hotel staff were very helpful and accommodating.
