Score from 5 reviews Exceptional
Excellent hotel with friendy staff and special dinner.
The ryokan is wonderful, just what one can expect of a traditional japanese inn. Slippers, yukata, towels and all toilet products are provided, the room was really spacious, futons were nice. The onsen is beautiful, you can also book a private one, when you want to go as a couple. The food was delicious and so much, our stomachs were at danger to explode... All in all a wonderful experience!
Be careful, the ryokan is far up in the Mountains, there is not much around, and connection to Nikko and Kinugawa onsen takes time! The last bus from Kinugawa onsen leaves around 16:15, the last from Yunishigawa Station at 17:45. but knowing this, the distance is not a disadvantage, as we wanted some quiet and nature.

The ryokan itself is great. The outdoor hot spring over looked a river. It could not have been a more friendly atmopshere. The staff was excellent as well. I can not speak Japanese very well, so they made an effort to talk to me in English. It helped a lot!
The ryokan and it's village are really out of the way. It's expensive to get to, although it's not the ryokan's fault. The town the ryokan is in is kind of boring as well. If you don't like shopping for Japanese gifts, then you will find yourself with little to do.
The whole funky atmosphere of the place The truly amazing communal baths perched on the side of the river. The rope suspension bridge over the river you walk across for dinner. The dinner cooked on charcoal in a sand pit which you sit on floor beside to eat. It was an unexpected 2 train, one bus, 2 hour journey from downtown Nikko ( 3 if you miss the bus connection. BUT FANTASTIC scenery on the trip.
It's seen better days, it had 12 guests and could cater for 200. The rather boring buffet breakfast. ( compared with individually prepared ones in other ryokans I had stayed in at that price) The (local ) ryokan next door was a quarter of the price...!!!
The place with the real history You can feel the touch of traditional Japanese in every corner of this Ryokan Irori(Japanese fire grilled) dinner is one of a kind experience for dining Onsen with beautiful scenery The unique beautiful bridge that bridge between Main Tower & Dining Place
The room in Main Tower has thin walls. You can't be too noisy
The ryokan, onsen and the surroundings in the hills were perfect.
It was difficult to get to without a car.
The people at Honke Bankyu were exceptionally capable. Generous, and accommodating to people with limited Japanese. Accommodations very comfortable. Food superior. Onsen facilities immaculate, varied, and provided in a wonderful natural setting.
They provided an excellent vegetarian dinner for us, and it didn't seem like they had any trouble understanding what "vegetarian" means. Small bath, one indoor and one outdoor. Book the private outdoor bath if you're travelling as a couple, it is worth the small extra cost. We booked the cheapest room option and got a large room in the main building with a private toilet (no bath or shower in the room).
It's far away. Nice to get up into the mountains but I believe that you may have a just as good experience staying at a onsen in Kinugawa onsen or in Nikko
The food was really good and the place was nicely decorated in japanese style. Japanese style bed was also very comfortable and staffs were nice. I would like to recommend the place for people who wants to experience the real japanese style hotel.
It was too far from the main nikko. There were only one train and one bus every hour so we were really tight on our schedules. Though staff from Honke Bankyu came to pick us up to the train station.
Atmosphere, very helpful and patient staff, great hot baths with a beautiful view on the river! Beautiful remote location in the mountains!!
We thought this place was just amazing, especially the private Rotenburo! And the dinners were just unbelievable. Luckily I speak a little Japanese! Bring a phrasebook if you don't, most of the staff only speak a little English (though some speak quite a bit).
Amazing experience! Authentic place from 1666, you can feel the battles and lives fought around it, but it's peaceful and relaxing like no other. The good is beyond description and just the dinner is worth the stay. The onsen is beutiful, situated near the river and has an open air area.
History It was fairly exciting
-The environment -The meal -The rooms
Authentic Japanese Onsen Experience. Staff is exceptional even though they speak little to no English, but that was not an issue as it adds to the authenticity of the experience. We were the only non Asian guests there but felt very welcomed by all. Dinner experience was one of a kind. Authentic food, delicately presented, and thoroughly enjoyable. A unique and memorable experience. Highly recommend booking the private bath. A little hard to get to, and on the higher price end but we'll worth the money and trip. Staff even comes out to wait for the bus with you, waving goodbye. One of the better memories of our trip.
Great, real japan atmosphere with traditional style Good food.
Breakfast is at 8:00. No later.
I am 45 years old from Boston, usa, and I came to the hotel on my own, as a mini vacation I took after a business conference in Japan. There is no other word to describe the stay in this hotel other than amazing ! Amazing experience Best thing I saw and experienced in Japan Food was exceptional (service, rituals, tastes, atmosphere). Worth every dollar I spent. Location is amazing especially during October-November due to the magnificent foliage. This hotel is not just a place you come to stay while experiencing the surrounding environment. This hotel is the experience itself !
I wish I knew it is so beautiful and I would spend less time in Tokyo and more time in Nikko
Accommodated in a suite of rooms in the main hall. The private onsen was a treat worth having, although we used the communcal onsens too. Absolutely bowled over by the hospitality we enjoyed, the inherent charm and history of the ryokan and its stunning location. Drive up there from Nikko on the mountain road, No.249, was brilliant.
There was nothing we didn't like.
