After searching for an outdoor onsen ryokan near Tokyo, I found Hoshi Onsen Chojukan. It was one of the most beautiful places I've ever been to. The service, the food, and the location made you feel like you've gone to another world. And the onsen is so beautiful. I will definately go back again and again. Plus the price of this place is great. We are lucky to experince the fall season at this place during our stay. It was a perfect first time ryokan stay.
Charming, large Japanese-style ryokan in a nice remote mountainous setting by a river. Excellent food and service, as you can expect at any good Japanese inn. The "tamaki" rotenburo (outside bath) was excellent; a shame it's sex-segregated and hence only available for limited time. The large indoor mixed bath you tend to see in the photos was interesting and quite unique amongst such baths I've been to in Japan.
With the typical Japanese per-person pricing system it rapidly gets expensive for a family.
Very nice onsen ryokan, with fair accomodation (given the price) and outstanding bathing facilities The staff was extremely helpful
Cleanness is OK in the bathing rooms, altough some little bugs can be found in the rooms The place is difficult to reach, especially after dark. From Tokyo you have to take 2 trains and 2 buses (and the last bus has a difficult schedule) The price is a little bit too high given the place and season
Beautiful location, nice old buildings, great onsen, friendly staff, good food and plenty of it...a memorable stay and the best place I ve ever been to Japan!
