Score from 423 reviews Very good
Just a quarter mile from JR Kyoto Train Station, Nihonkan offers simple Japanese rooms with tatami (woven-straw) floors and traditional futon beds.

The staff were very friendly, and the suggestions for things to do around Kyoto were very helpful. We also had a tea ceremony with a member of staff, which I'd highly recommend
great shared house where you can met other traveler, really great information in common part for visiting kyoto area, quiet place
futon aren't good... 2 different type will be great
Good walking distance from Kyoto Station. Japanese traditional old houses +Tatami,Bedding. modern & comfortable toilet and shower booth.
bit far from reception buliding but it's not a kind of cons.
- Breakfest was good - Bikes for hire - Staff very helpfull and excellent english - If you are okay with something akin to a youth hostel, it is perfect
Staff very helpful and heart warming. Very convenient location, especially if you know how to use the bus system.
the most space is smallish, especially if you are from north America. But this is norm in Japan. Get use to it.
Nice hostel, close to Kyoto trainstation (15 min walk). Very clean and staff speaks English very well. Overall Nice stay.
Little bit heary, but that's to be expected in a hostel.
Excellent Staff, always ready to help us. Good location, 10 minutes walking to Kyoto Station.
There isn't an elevator to carry the luggage
Staff were extremely helpful and the facilities were all excellent.
Nothing. I recommend this location to anybody.
The staff were extremely helpful and spoke excellent english, which was helpful. They are great with recommending tourist sights and activities. We had a small japanese room for 2, with a private bathroom, and we were very happy with it. It was clean and comfortable. Although the walls are thin we had no issues with noise during our 2 night stay. It is a small room and small bathroom but for travellers in their 20s and 30s this would be an ideal place to stay. Wifi was pretty good.
The check-in reception is in a different building to Ikoi-no-ie and this was not made clear prior to arrival - making things a bit confusing. Ikoi-no-ie is part of a group of small japanese-style accommodations under the umbrella name of "Nagomi-kyoto" - and this is the building at which you have to check in. This should be communicated more clearly to guests prior to arrival - since I booked through booking.com I didn't realize how the business was set up. Also, unclear from the website, it is located on a pedestrian-only road. So if you take a taxi they may not know how to find it - there were great instructions to tell the taxi driver, but we were only given these AFTER we had arrived. It would be more useful to have received this information prior to arrival. Our taxi driver called them three times from my phone to figure out where to drop us off - but then we were met by a very helpful woman who guided us to the reception to check in. So: the best thing to do would be to call the reception on your arrival to Kyoto to make getting there simpler. The staff speak good english.
We had a large traditional room which had enough space for the three of us. The room was clean as well as the common bathroom. The staff could speak very well english and were helpful. Ikoi Ne Io is located in a beautiful area with a lot of cute restaurants nearby.
You should inform yourself about the exact location of the hotel. Gojo's alleys can be pretty confusing at the beginning even if it is located close to the train station.
Feels like staying in japanese house. Experience local daily life. Very quite area. Clean and well maintained property. Shared dining area with all amenities provided. Information on and around kyoto is provided including any major and small events. Staff have excellent english. They accept foreign exchange with one of the best rates in Japan.
A bit far from the closest subway exit. Around 10-15 minutes walk depend whether you are carrying your luggage or not. The reception which is in a separate establishment although the same hotel group is even farther from subway exit
Great staff who were happy to help with any requests. Very clean and a great location as it's well within walking distance from the Kyoto station.
As we were a group of five we had one room which was situated in the attic - it was a bit of a climb up the ladder - suitcases and all. It did add some fun but the ladder may be challenging for older guests or for those that need to get up in the night. This was the only room that required ladder access and if nimble I would suggest you not let it put you off.
The place is basically a hostel, misleadingly labelled as a Ryokan. Note: it is not a Ryokan. The staff are surly and condescending. The reception is in a different location from the 10 room main place of accommodation, which is unsupervised and in a poor state of cleanliness and repair. There is none of the atmosphere or hospitality you would expect of a Ryokan and at this price. Finally, they offered a pricey laundry service, then promptly lost one of the (few) items of clothing I entrusted them with, after which the staff argued that it was my fault as I had not listed all the items for them in advance. Would not stay there again.
Nice people at reception
The room we were put in was nothing like any of the images. It was a completely different building. They have a few buildings and put you in where they can fit you. Futons very uncomfortable and room smelt very dusty
Great location, really quiet street and only10mn-walk from Kyoto station. Rooms really clean, all appliances well-maintained. English-speaking staff, efficient and friendly. Great value for money!
More efficient curtains needed, or bring a sleep mask. Traditional building, so if the guest upstairs walks like a dinosaur, you can't sleep ;o))
Near location to the Station.
Broken things like the toilet or Computer Are Not being repared. This places want to seem like a ryokan, but it is just a youth hostel. It is very very very noisy!!! You can Hear everything(!) from the other rooms.
It was okay.
I should have read the details more carefully. I thought it was a ryokan, however, it was an apartment building with tatami mats and futons.
Close to Station.
Small room. Noise when others guests walk by the hotel.
It's a lovely little place in a great location near the station, great atmosphere and I like having some cooking facilities as part of the trip for me is to explore the supermarkets and the food.
No complaints, I've stayed at Ikoe No le a few times, would always come back to it and have recommended it to many friends.
friendly english speaking staff, awesome tea ceremony (extra cost but worth it)
reception is in another buidling, but just 1 min away
A very nice choice for budget travellers to Kyoto. The location is about 15 minutes walk from Kyoto main station, and you can find a lot of restaurants near the hotel. The traditional Japanese-styled room is small but clean. The staff is also very helpful to provide suggestions for transportation, and also you can buy the Kyoto one-day bus pass at the front desk.
Sometimes the wireless connection is weak in the room.
The service was great, authentic Japanese-style rooms, value for money
Good traditional Japanese experience (the room itself and the surrounding streets), helpful staff and resources for tourists
Credit card surcharge, no wifi in the room (even though we stayed on the ground floor)
The reception is far away
