Beautiful old style Ryokan in a quiet backstreet perfectly located for getting to Gion and on buses to all the major locations. The owner is a low key guy with perfect English who is happy to help but also very unobtrusive. Would definitely recommend to anyone wanting to stay in more traditional style accommodation. I'd happily recommend Inn Kawashima and would stay there again.

Very nice place to stay and experience traditional japanese ryokan with traditional bathing (shower and bath tube maintaining temperature of 40°), winter garden and patio. Worth visiting to taste the climate of old Kyoto sipping green tea with rice and wearing yukata. Close to the main street but still located in a quite place. Friendly staff, not intrusive.

a bit expensive but still worth visiting

Nice place - rooms comfortable and trsaditional. Great bath.

Having meals there was very expensive compared to eating out at a restaurant, though very nice to have the occasional meal in your room.

    Great location and good wifi

We stayed here two nights in the eastebreak 2014. This is our first time in Japan, and we wanted to make our experience as japanese as possible and therfore booked four ryokans to stay at in different towns. Kawashima was the last one on our list to visit. Unfortunatly I therfore have to conclude that although this ryokan is perfectly situated 8 minuted walking distance from the Gion bridge, it is overpriced. Our intention was to spend the little extra to stay at a beautiful ryokan in Kyoto, but at the end we ended up liking our stay at the Itoya Hotel Kyoto (four nights, butique hotel, one block down the road and half the price) much more. The bathroom is shared, not very beautiful and the Tsubo-niwa courtyard garden is quite small. Breakfast is expensive (a little more than 2000 yen per person). And the owner is cordial, but not the soul of Japanese friendliness you become accustomed to. In summary, I recommend spending your time and money on another ryokan experience in Japan.

Very typical ryokan. Must be done once. This one may answer this brief. Centrally located

Obviously comfort is more than limited. Tiny rooms without any space for big suitcases. Shared bathroom and sinks in a corridor is not ideal. Not sure it is worth the price

Good breakfast for ¥1000 extra, clean room, free wifi. Could park my rental bicycle (which I really recommend of getting) in the shed. Owner speaks English very well.

Front rooms can be quite noisy as cars and chattering people go by just a few meters away (so request a back room if possible). Pricy at ¥20.000 for 2 nights, probably because Kyoto was booked out for the cherry blossom season.

Location is excellent. Stuff is very easygoing.

Way to the bathroom is through open garden which is pretty but can be cold in winter.

We loved experiencing a Traditional Japanese Inn! The owner was wonderful, spoke great English, was very helpful, and always greeted us as we arrived/left. The location was wonderful and close to metro stations. The Inn was very clean, quiet, and had everything we needed. Every evening hot tea and cookies and fresh towels were waiting for us in our room. The traditional Japanese breakfast was amazing and worth every penny. We had a lovely experience. Thank you!

Lovely little inn. It was a fantastic stay, and would highly recommend it. The Japanese breakfast was tasty. Walking distance to quite a few sights. Air conditioning was a bit of a saviour as well!

Definitely cannot be helped, but the street is very loud at night. If possible, ask for a back-facing room!
