Rotenburo is the thing, so are the japanese-style rooms. Staff is very helpful, even though they barely speak any english.
If you're not into japanese cuisine, you will suffer through the seemingly neverending dinner - in this case definitely bring somehing edible with you or try to make an arrangement with the staff upfront. Also it's rather pricy for what it is and there is not much around to do. Rather than spending a night, I'd suggest a daytrip from Kyoto: Take the Kurama-Kibune hiking trail and then rest in the Kurama Onsen.
Loved the room, the tranquil atmosphere, the incredible food, the hot pools, the unobtrusive yet complete service in every aspect.
- Staff is very very kind and sweet - The Onsen experience is something else - The Village of Kurama is lovely with many places to see and things to do - The nature around is so relaxing - A must to do at least for 1 night - The Yukatas were very nice - The shuttle from the station eventhough is a very short walking distance Such a relaxing experience in the beautiful village of Kurama.
- Can be challenging to eat if you are not into raw food but just let them know about it and they will change the menu..... AWESOME staff!
The service is what you expect from a nice onsen ryokan, and it is easily accessible from Kyoto.
It's not a real onsen in the sense that they add water and heat to the onsen; it is grossly overpriced for what you get. It is close ebough to Kyoto for a day trip to try the waters - not hot enough - and the food. Despite being in the middle of a beautiful mountain setting, there is no place to walk - no trails, etc.
Atmosphere, elebarate Japanese hospitality, hot springs, amazing staff, beautiful scenery ( but you need to take a hotel shuttle to reach good hiking trails)
Unless you are REALLY used to Japanese food, better bring yor own - or you will starve!
Fabulous and magical place. A true priviledge to be able to enjoy Kurama's Onsen (part of the Ryokan) in the early morning. It strategically faces the mountain giving you the impression that you are really in the deepness of the forest far away from civilization. Not surprisingly for Japan, the staff was helpful and extremely friendly. One of the staff members had one of the most contagious smiles I have had the pleasure to witness in my entire life. Remarkable. Of course do not expect the comfort and luxury of other Ryokans you will find around Kyoto. Facilities are slightly old. This place is middle range but it does not try to hide its flaws. What you see is what you get. Dinner and breakfast were truly delicious. The room big for a Ryokan and comfortable. Price quality you cannot have much better in and around Kyoto. If you have time please try the route Kurama and Kibune via the mountain shrine (best way to propare for the relaxation after).
Beautiful place, very clean, friendly and helpful staff. Onsen was amazing!
magic temple! nice onsen
Excellent service, especially during meals...very nice staff, nice hot baths...very relaxing
Rural setting in nature close to Kuramadera. Excellent transportation and shuttle bus at train station. Kind attentive staff. Very nice food. Clean & appealing onsen.
Nothing negative about our stay.
Only 45min from Kyoto by train. Onsen are nice, sleeping on futons is comfortable and although The People don't speak very well Japanese, they are trying.
Relatively expensive for what you get, we stayed 2 nights but 1 night would have been enough to have an impression of Japanese Ryokan and onsen.
the cleanliness of the place and the food was superb
The location was good. The food was great, both dinner and breakfast. The value for the money was excellent.
The in house onsen is excellent for people who enjoy hot bath before ging to bed. Good food
superb food and excellent service. Good coffee too! No extra clothes are required as kimonos are supplied so next time, we will walk in via the Temple track over the mountain with just a light backpack.
We loved the environment, staff sweet, attentive, went out of their way to accommodate us. The food was delicious, soaking tubs heavenly.
1) we went for a walk and didn't like walking on street with cars...would love to hike/walk in woods without worrying about speeding cars, motorcycles...maybe a dirt trail behind facility. 2) would like option for thicker mat...my husband has knee/hip issue and the floor sleeping wasn't cushion enough (altho I realize this is traditional Japanese style)
The staff was very friendly and always willing to help. Not all of them understood English but we still manage to communicate. Love the fact we were able to check in early as we arrived at 11am. Once you exit the train station, you will immediately see the shuttle van with the Kurama sign. It's a 2 min drive to the onsen from there. After checking in, walked a few hundred metres back to the station to visit the temple. Recommended to take the cable car up and then walk down. The outdoor and indoor onsen was good with the indoor being much bigger with a cold pool and a sauna at the corner. Comes with shampoo, conditioner and body wash. Rooms were comfortable and green tea plus mochi was served. Dinner plus breakfast was fantastic. Think it was a Kaisaki dinner? Overall, had a relaxed time there. A yukata, bath towel plus a small towel comes complimentary of the room rates
The futon was a bit too thin for my liking.
Nice traditionnal ryokan. Spacey rooms. Kurama is a nice small city with nice walks to do.
The view from the room was not so nice. The food and the onsen were good but not astonishing for that range of price.
More expensive than it should have been.
The bath are delight full and we enjoy. Both outside and inside the room beautiful with a staff very helpfull an djapones style. The dinner excellent served in our room. So many things and every thing really tasty!!!!
Around the hotel , nothing , no garden to relas no beautifull view...just the forest could be better one inconvenient is the breakfast, excellent for a dinner but in front of you early morning: saumon cooked, tofu in soup, vegie and a big shrimp is toomuch. Nothing for our teen ager, no milk bread, fruit. Just hided they accept to give to my son one orange juice:!!!!! Can be japones, but did they it this morning???I Am not sure.....
Staff was very friendly, dinner was excellent and onzen was very relaxing. I will go back for sure for my next trip to Japan.
Good service.Staffs are do nice and helpful.
It was very authentic. The dinner was endless, about 9 courses. And be prepared for more fish for breakfast. The onset was roasting and after a while I got chatting to some people, very convivial if not a bit awkward at first.
I would advise looking up the etiquette of Onsen on wiki before entering to avoid any boo boos!
food, room, staffs and onsen
outdoor poor closed too early
Excellent food and lovely baths.
Room smelt of stale cigarette smoke. For the price the interior had a slight 70's shabbiness to it.
