This is a beautiful spot up north from Kyoto in the hills. The onsen baths are amazing and the kaiseki dinner was really fun. The staff was very helpful and kind and a shuttle picks you right up from the last subway stop.
A number of the staff were obviously sick with colds so that detracts from the feeling of cleanliness. Everyone gets sick though so I don't imagine there is much else they could have done! Hope they get better soon.
The hotel is in a beautiful location! Must not miss the Kurama-dera temple! The staff is very friendly and the place is SO VERY CLEAN! Food is very good too!
The outdoor onsen had a great view and the cool air felt great contrasting against the hot water. It was very relaxing. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The food was amazing. Each meal had a variety of dishes, and everything tasted great. We had a wonderful time at Kurama Onsen.
The staff were wonderful
Like the place so peaceful and quiet
Eary check out time, no sauna, or steam room. Facilities is quite old

This is a very nice place located in the mountain side near Kyoto. Easy to go by train and free shuttle is available without reservation. I thought it would be a small and quiet place as it only has 5 rooms. But in fact it's very much a travelers' place and most people come all the way for a onsen bath without a stay which makes the bath very crowded until dinner time. Well mainly for women as my husband said he enjoyed the bath in a 'comfort' way. The Guests who stayed over night were all foreigners which could make the onsen experience not so nice if you happened to meet sb annoying. Unfortunately I did: when I was in the bath sb else was doing selfie! So I had to leave right away. Anyway the place is quite nice and the staff were helpful. Moreover they have tasting ice cream!
No fancy onsen or room but because of this, you feel its very natural. All the staff and the driver we come across are friendly and helpful. The facilities are well kept and clean. Recommend to spend a night there so you will be totally relaxed after the bath. A wonderful onsen experience.
The staff were helpful and very friendly, facilities were clean, and the baths were heavenly. The nearby walk over the mountain through the Kurama temple was stunning and a great 3 hour hike, even without walking shoes. The food was very traditional and varied, and plentiful.
Not an ideal place for picky eaters.Slow service at the bar (though a vending machine for beer was on site so all was not lost).
Lovely attentive staff. Despite their limited English, they were most attentive and accommodating. Food is lovely. We loved the gorgeous temple down the road Kurama-dera. Stunning setting.
Our first experience of onsen and ryokan. Outside bathing whilst it was snowing. Staff had limited English but did their very best to explain things and make us comfortable
It was difficult to know what we were eating without menus in english, but still a great experience in traditional Japanese dining
The environment is peaceful and comfortable, very local.
the kimonos were lovely and the baths were beautiful and very relaxing
the staff rushed us through dinner, and made us start earlier than the agreed time. we felt quite pressurized. Both of these features made the evening overly structured and quite uncomfortable. In addition, the staff commented that we (two females) were drinking too much. Which was also unpleasant.
The service was fantastic, was taken good care of throughout the stay, the dinner was healthy, copious and traditional. The internal and external baths were well maintained, clean, very peaceful and relaxing
The staff were very friendly & helpful. The dinner was great with a wide variety of different delicacies.
Lack of convenience stores nearby.
good view, good dinner and clear room
The dinner set was great, they served a nice traditional Japanese meal! Nice onsen and polite staff, we do enjoy staying at Kurama Onsen.
Excellent service from staff.
Outdoor Onsen below my expectation.
The outdoor onsen was very nice The staff were very hospitable There is also a relaxation room good for family and friends to gather and rest The air is very fresh, good for lungs. Scrumptous food
The room could have a shower place
The onsen, the service and the food, the surrounding of the Ryokan
Travelling time is a bit long, but that is given when you want a great location for your onsen
Outside Spa, local cuisine
Amazing kaiseki dinner, great bath facilities and staff. Breakfast was also very good.
Dinner menu was all in Japanese and staff's English wasn't great-would have been nice to know a bit more about each dish.
Its a nice place to get away to rest after a few hectic days of walking in Kyoto. Nice surroundings n nice onsen. The Bakery stand at the station sells yummy buns, muffins n bread. Good service n food. They went out of the way to accommodate our request for salmon sashimi !
The village has nothing much to offer. As the onsen has day users it was rather busy n crowded in the afternoon that we were there. the futon was not very comfortable so did not sleep well.
We came here after about 8 days in Tokyo and had an incredible time at Kurama Onsen - their shuttle service is very convenient to get from the train station to the inn. The staff were warm, gracious, and friendly, and since there are only about six rooms you don't feel like one of the crowd. We enjoyed the hot spring both in the evening and early in the morning since we only stayed one night, and had it all to ourselves both times. Definitely go for the outdoor one! The food is traditional Japanese cuisine and is brought out in a beautiful display. Not everything was to our tastes, but we tried it all regardless. They set up the futon after dinner while we were at the bath and it was very comfy for the evening. In the morning we wanted to go to the temple after we checked out, which is down the road closer to the station. Not only did they hold onto our bags for us, but they gave us a ride down to the temple on the shuttle and also brought our luggage down to the station when we were done! Note however that I speak a decent amount of Japanese, but for those who don't some of the staff speaks a *little* bit of English since they do seem to get quite a few foreigners to stay (there were two other parties in addition to us who were foreign). A tip: it took us over an hour to get from Kyoto station to Kurama using the trains, mainly because we had to wait for about 20 minutes at one point at a transfer, so be sure to allow yourself some extra time to get there before 6 PM if you're coming from farther away, like Tokyo.
