We stayed at Kyoya Ryokan for one night only in July to go to the sumo wrestling championship. It is about a 15 min walk to Nagoya Castle and the sumo venue, so great location. Staff were very friendly, welcoming and accommodating. The garden was especially lovely and a little oasis in a big city. We would highly recommend having dinner here, the food was amazing, as was breakfast. My only regret waso staying for one night only!

    Nothing negative to say

Garden was pretty. Great having additional hostel facilities such as access to tea and ice, microwave etc. Staff were friendly and helpful and the main person spoke good english.

Don't quite get the same personal service that you do in a more up market ryokan (i.e. tea served in your room when you arrive) it was more a sort of help yourself place. Better value places to stay elsewhere provide a more personal service. It was not possible to shut out noise from the corridor as the front door had gaps around the edge when shut. Aircon was also quite noisy.

Kyoya convinced us that the next time we visit Japan we'll probably stay exclusively in ryokan. An excellent example of how living like the locals can help you understand and enjoy a culture better. The facilities were great and Hiro-san the most accommodating host you could wish for!

My partner and I almost always stay in a ryokan when we visit Japan. Kyoya stands out for its spa facilities, traditional Japanese breakfast and the hospitality of the owner; Mr Hiro san. We stayed for 3 nights and a particular highlight was breakfast, each different from the last and a gastrinomique adventure. The rooms are typical ryokan style and I recommend booking one that overlooks the traditional Japanese garden in the courtyard. Beware those with heavy feet or children. The ryokan ( like most in Japan) is made of wood and the wall is paper thin. Sound travels a long way at 1 o'clock in the morning!
