Score from 272 reviews Very good
Location is close to train station, very convenient to get on trains or buses. Very clean and low key. Even though there is no shower in my room, there is a shower right across the hallway and no one else is using it. Water temperature is good. The staff is friendly and keeps everything super clean. Definitely a good find for the price. I will stay again if coming to Kyoto again.
Room is really tiny and may not be convenient for a big person.
Staff are polite and helpful. Typical Japanese style room. Everything is pretty clean. About 15 minutes walking from Tyoto station to the hotel.
It will be better if more toiletries can be provided.
I really liked the atmosphere and the feel of the place. It was exactly what I was looking for!
The room could have had a few more decorative touches to further help with the ryokan experience.
I only stayed one night in matsubaya, but it was a great experience sleeping in a traditional ryokan. The staff is great and speak really fluently English, which was very rare in japan. Location was very good, really close to the central train station.
Breakfast wasn't included in the price.
Clean, friendly staff, good value for money
Excellent location in quiet residential area close to the main Kyoto JR station (approximately 10 minute walk), as well as shops and other facilities. Staff very helpful in the main. Very good free wifi connection in the room and public areas.
Some of the communal areas could be improved and a little cluttered.
It's not really a traditional ryokan, as it seams in the presentation, but we was in a studio flat in a modern building.
Good location, great walking to many attractions. Staff very helpful like in a good youth hostel. Loved the garden room.
When you add a little plastic ensuite bathroom and modern pillows the rebuilt Ryokan has lost some of its authentic charm.
Staffs were very helpful and friendly.
Not sure if it's the best value for the amount of money paid.
Hard to find initially. "Kitchen" was rudimentary.
No complaints at all about this place, great value for money. Lovely Japanese rooms, for the price you won't find better in Kyoto
Environment was clean and organised. Good place for resting for the night. Receptionists were friendly and helpful! There is a bus-stop within 3 min walk from the accommodation.
A slightly long walk to the accommodation from Kyoto station.
Staff for their efficiency, helpfulness and courtesy.
There was nothing to dislike. Room was stunning; full indoor and outdoor bathing facilities were pure luxury. Separate loft workspace with view was a treat. Location was a dramatic ravine, short walk with striking vistas to local beautiful shrines. Meal was tremendous, huge with so many courses, including blowfish two ways, delicious grilled course, all was impeccably presented, probably involved 100 small ceramic dishes some of which were works of art. Breakfast gorgeous and filling too. I nearly teared up at departure time, so reluctant to leave.
We met a young staff who was very nice and very good in English language. Thank god 555
- Location (central close to kyoto station) - Around the corner is a bicycle rental (tip!)
- wifi bit slow
Very helpful staff. Incredible comfy given it is a futon bed. A bit distant from most of the attraction but walking around is a good way to explore Kyoto.
The ryokan is not really walking distant from JR Kyoto because we travel with big luggage. But then taxi driver is not particularly happy to taxi to the ryokan because it is too close for them.
Great location, ten min walk from central train station. Comfortable sleep. Friendly staff
Wifi really bad. Really expensive. Staff not very helpful with information about Kyoto. Bad English. Bad breakfast.
Exceptionally nice staff. Good level of English spoken. Madoka in particular speaks very good English and went out of her way to find some recommendations for gift shopping.
close to the train station modern bathroom decorative good ryokan experience
Not far from the JR Kyoto station, clean and tidy,I can use the microwave to heat the food bought from the B1F Iestan!that is very convinient !I can communicate with the host in English without any problem.

Traditional set up of the accommodation, with Japanese robes supplied, tatame mat floors and soft mattresses on the floor, with complimentary tea. Good location, easy to find.
Limited tourist information available, with very basic English spoken by staff. Also it was fairly expensive for such simple accommodation, although I understand that ryokans are typically expensive. However we stayed at a budget hostel that provided very similar accommodation for 40% of the cost, which was the main downside to this place.
The small kitchen facilities was provided with utensils for cooking. The free laundry facilities were a great help. The staff were very helpful and spoke some English which made it easy.
Facilities are good and value for money
