If you are looking for a non smoking room, forget about this hotel.
When entering our room on the 8th floor, our "non smoking room" had a distinct smell of stale smoke. When returning to the front desk to complain about this, we were informed that the three top floors had been converted to non smoking floors (previously smoking had been allowed in all rooms in the hotel). This "conversion" consisted of spraying the rooms with air freshener. Obviously, this is by no means enough to remove smoke smell from carpets, wall paper and fabrics. The hotel staff offered to change room in order to get a less smelly room. All of the three alternative rooms that we were shown were, however, worse or significantly worse than the room we were initially assigned. As we had no alternative solution for spending the night indoors in Minakami, we had to settle with the initial room.
Upon checking out, the hotel staff offered no form of compensation for the fact that they did not deliver a service corresponding to what they had sold. That is, a non smoking room.
As the hotel was quite pricy (24000 yen/night), we expected far better than this.
Great view from the room, decent breakfast
