The staff is very friendly. They can pick up at the train station. Don't try to walk to the pension. One thing you have to notice is the main door is on the other side .
Very friendly and helpful! Speaking very good English! Excellent dinner and breakfast. Free transport from/to station and town! Very good advice and help to buy ticket for side seeing bus. This place had the best service we had in Japan!
2 km from centrum, not so bad if one is fit,
A lovely and comfertable pension, with a very friendly english speaking owner who cooks also very well! room is very cosy. The pension is not located near the station but you can call the owner who picks you up and brings you to the station where you can start your daytrip so this is no problem at all. Great place!!!!
We had a wonderful stay in this very comfortable and spotlessly clean pension. The owner and his wife are absolutely lovely, very welcoming and very helpful. Kaz san speaks great English and is a fantastic cook - the (French-style) dinner and breakfast were absolutely delicious - and we really appreciated how he went out of his way to make sure we got the most out of our stay in Nikko, driving us to and from the sights and the local baths, and telling us about the area and its history. Definitely one of the highlights of our trip to Japan!
Nothing - it was all fantastic!
Kind Staff, very friendly, very ready to help you. Pick up service and more! I really enjoyed my stay at l'Escale. Good place to stay, very clean and peaceful.
A bit outside the city center and a rather steep uphill climb to get there. But the very friendly owner is willing to pick you up after dinner and give you a lift to the train station...
The owner were excellent and very accommodative. He picked us up from the train station as well as dropped us off. The place is a little remote, so his help was appreciated. The place is just ok, but for a single night stay it was sufficient. The breakfast fare was good and suited our needs as we had requested vegetarian fare.
The hospitality at L'escale was wonderful. Kazu and his family are fabulous hosts. The pension is very comfortable, the food 'OISHII': French under a Japanese influence.
The people from there are very polite, the place was clean and comfortable. Very good pick-up and drop-off service. Payable with credit card, which in our opinion is great. Nice area, great view.
We didn't like that we had to call for pick'up, they could accept an email of confirmation. The heater in the room was a little noisy and gave off an unpleasant smell.
Everything! It was simply fabulous. The hotel is a beautiful cosy place, ample space in the room, super clean premises with towels and toiletries which were changed everyday. A lounge to relax in if you wish and a separate quaint dining room. And free WIFI! Kaz-san, who speaks fantastic English by the way, made my stay all the more memorable as he took the trouble to collect me from the train station, and showed me a spring parade that was on its last performance (I had arrived late in the evening) and my first view of the beautiful sakura. He just wanted me to have that experience, which was totally kind of him. If you opt for the breakfast and dinner, it will be well worth the price as he is a fantastic cook, and the portion is so generous. Although it is kinda quiet in the evening where the pension is, Kaz san will be happy to send you to city area or drop you near the attractions and you can explore on your own. Do remember to stock up on snacks and such as there is no convenience store right outside the pension, only in the city area. If you need pick up please indicate in your booking and Kaz san will arrange to collect you via email.
Nothing negative at all!
Free parking, quiet situation, very friendly and helpful proprietor with good English. Would go back !
Far from station but pick ups and lifts from the owner are freely available.
The owner cared a lot about me.
Have to leave the room during the day for cleaning?! Curfew from 12am.
I have been in a few budget hotels in my time, but none were ever as friendly or as helpfull as this one. The owner invited us into his hotel like we were guest in his home, after we had done the domestics, he then drove us to the temples, gave us a guide book (in English) and gave the kids homework (things to look out for as they were walking round) before he set us on our merry way, he gave us the names if a few restaurant in Nikko and then said "here's my number when you finished eating please phone me and I will pick you up!!!" I still can not believe it now as I am writing this, if you need a hotel with a personal touch this is it.
Staff's very friendly , Feel like home , delicious meal, pickup&drop service
The owner of the Inn and his wife where more than helpful and kind. He gave us a ride two times and he would have more if we would have asked Their food was also very delicious and the Inn felt very warm. Because we came during winter season we had a looot of blankets as well and a real heater (not a regular part of Japanese households)
The only thing we would complain about (what we could also have said during the stay, but didn't because they are just to lovely to actually care) is that the heater woke us up frequently by going on and off all the time. But that's all really and as I mentioned they would probably have done something right away if mentioned.
The owner must be the most helpful and nice person on earth. We hadn't thought to book dinner at the ryokan so when we arrived tired and hungry the kitchen was cold. Immediately the owner offered to take us back into town by car and also picked us up after dinner. And when we wanted to experience a typical Japanese onsen he arranged our visit to a friend's spa and, again, drove us there and picked us up afterwards, and the next day drove us to the station and helped with buying our tickets. We felt humbled and very grateful for so much selfless kindness. Breakfast was copious and delicious. The attached onsen wasn't open when we stayed there so we didn't experience it but, again, at 10pm and quite tired himself the owner arranged for us to bathe at the public one.
Don't expect high tech and luxury, in the "Western" rooms furniture may be a bit scuffed and the heating slightly eccentric but given the price and especially the overwhelmingly friendly welcome this shouldn't hold you back, except if you're really attached to a high degree of comfort. We didn't see the Japanese rooms which may be quite different.
The host is very nice, gives information about Nikko and the shrines, and picks you up at the station when you call. He speaks english.
A bit far, and we had to walk beside the road. We found no way to go through the forest and mountain.
Owner was SUPER helpful, spoke English fairly well, and dropped my friend and I off and picked us up later. 800 Yen from the station by taxi.
Heater in my room didn't work properly, kept shutting off in intervals. Freezing cold night.
The staff at Pension L'escale were very helpful and friendly. They were willing to drive me to the temple area and pick me up afterwards. The room itself was clean and a good deal for the price.
The location was a bit isolated.
We count Mr Katz as one of the nicest people you can possibly meet on a holiday. He was extremely helpful. He collected our bags on arrival and left us free to go sightseeing for the day and fetch us from the restaurant after dinner to the hotel. He even took the trouble to send us out again to the garden at Rinnoji temple to enjoy the sight of the garden with its autumn folliage beautifully lit in the evening. Thank you Mr. Katz. Wish we could have stayed longer.
The staff were friendly and helpful, and willing to go out of their way to drop us off to the sightseeing locations. The food is definitely worth the money. Generous portion sizes and excellent cooking. Definitely get the meals when you're staying there! Knowledge of the local sights was very helpful, and great advice for what sights were worth going to. English was not an issue. Staff members spoke reasonable English.
The hospitality of the owner is great. Even though, the pension is quite far away from the train station but that's not a problem at all since the owner took care of us very well. Mr.Fujita picked up our luggages at the station before we went to the world heritage area before noon and then picked up us again in the evening to pension. We had dinner at the pension and it was delicious. Don't miss their dessert and the morning scone. Love this place.
The pension is a bit like staying in a friend's home, basic but charming, and the owner Kazu-san does everything he can to make it a very pleasant experience. Based on other review comments, on arrival at the railway station around 10am, we asked the info centre to call the pension, and Kazu-san came immediately to collect our luggage and give advice on getting to the temples, where to eat, and how to contact him to be picked up at the end of the day. We stayed 2 nights and he insisted on taking us to where we needed to be in the mornings, and picking us up at the end of the days. He gave us ginger sweets to help fend off my wife's travel sickness on the long winding bus drive to the lake, took us to see the night light display of the autumn colours in a temple garden (only 2 weeks a year), etc. Fantastic host. And good cook, trained in Tokyo and Paris, our breakfasts were great value at 1050 yen, would have liked to try his dinners (recommended by others) but we wanted Japanese food on our last 2 nights in Japan, and he serves European meals. Would stay here again if returning to Nikko.
Distance from town, but more than made up for by Kazu-san's willingness to pick up and deliver.
Kindness and availability of the owner who is offering to drive you to the railway station or to the temples.
