Good location, friendly helpful English speaking staff, large rooms, great breakfast
Onsen too hot in the morning so not possible for anyone to go in. Rooms a bit tired.
Nice traditional japan ryokan. They prepared the bed before I came back at night, and put a folding paper horse with good wishes.
But no wireless in the room, not convenient enough.
location is excellent as it it close to a lot of shops the garden is really beautiful and the whole place is very clean and spacious.
The main person assigned to assist us with tea, dinner, and breakfast was new and in-experienced. It was obvious that she is agitated because she does not know how to do the things she's supposed to do properly. We saw the person assigned to the other guests and they were a lot more experienced in terms of providing the service and providing simple instructions on what needs to be done. She actually ruined the whole experience for us because her being agitated and inexperienced contributed to our stress. She was very apologetic though....
Front desk were helpful and friendly. We liked the little touches such as origami on our pillows each night and the tea brought to us when we returned each pm. after sight seeing. Very good location for sight seeing and shopping.
Staff at front desk engaged in a ridiculous routine of putting our shoes away and then getting them out again every time we went in and out. This caused a lot of confusion and seemed unnecessary. Our older children found it impossible to have a lie in as the maids insisted on coming in to clean and put the futons away.
Clean, comfortable, good location. It is close to many different restaurants and shops so not having wifi is definitely not a problem for us. It was also our first time trying out a futon -- it was awesome.
One of the staff was extremely rude. He only appeared in one morning when we were checking out. Didn't appear to speak any English and all he seemed to want to do was to get our money and kick us out asap. Unbelievably terrible manner and impatience. But other staff members were all very friendly.
enthusiastic staff, even take us to the laundry room in midnight(maybe the best staff i have ever met) neat room close to the metro station true japanese lifestye(the public bathroom?),the tatami is so great
wifi issue is a bit annoying
- very traditional japanese style hotel/ ryokan therefore nice atmosphere - very friendly staff with some english skills - really good location at on of the main street
- not cheap but also no standard hotel, so fair prices
The hotel was clean, staff was friendly, especially the lady at the reception, good service generally, and the public bath was empty when I went, and it was nice. My room was spacious and I liked finding an origami on my bed every evening.
I paid something like 18000 yen per night without meals. That is way too expensive, according to what some Kyoto people told me afterwards, but to be honest I visited in a very busy time, during the Gion Matsuri festival.
We had a lovely stay here. The staff were very friendly and had great English. We were welcomed to our room with hot green tea and japanese sweets which was lovely after a long day walking around. Even better was the hot baths that they have in the basement. I was nervous about being naked in a communal bath but happily found that it was empty and so had a great soak by myself. They also have a whole range of toiletries and a dressing room section which made it feel more upmarket. If you're looking for a very traditional ryokan, this may not be for you as it does feel a bit like a hotel, but it was still a good taste of the traditional and felt very special.
Advertised as ryokan. However it felt like a normal hotel with traditional rooms. Website shows photos of garden view and a big tub but you don't get this.
Great location, lovely staff, green tea, tatami, kimono, loved it!
The location is brilliant, lovely street with walking access to Gion and the underground. Stunning individual shops and boutiques line the streets around. Our garden suite room was very special with doors opening onto our own private zen garden - perfect
Very central and well kept.
Make sure to order any meals that you wish to take (breakfast, dinner, etc.).
So very close to terrific shopping and many restaurants. Within walking distance to many sites. The staff and atmosphere were lovely.
The whole package is amazing if you want the Kyoto experience. The staff were truly fantastic and the garden is literally breathtaking.
Friendly staff and great location
Super helpful staff and clean spacious room, good location
First room they gave me was a smoking room so it smelled disgusting and they changed me to another room which was clean and fresh smelling
Traditional, very welcoming, good location
Room a bit hot and stuffy, breakfast caused confusion if you didn't book.
Dated public bath
Staff was really friendly and the ryokan is located on a good district! Atmosphere was nice and the room was spacious. Private bathroom was big on Japanese standards and the public bath was clean and cosy. Even the supposedly lobby-only-wifi was working fine in our room, probably because we happened to be near enough the router. In the room little details like small good night origamis and snacks changed every day!
Incredible experience. Me and my wife had a great time enjoying a traditional Japanese room. Highly recommended. Enjoy Japan!!
We loved how authentic this place was. Very beautiful garden, and our family room (in the main building, actually three rooms plus bathroom and foyer) looked onto the garden. Excellent location near the food markets, and the staff were very helpful indeed. We were the only people staying during our time, so we got fabulous attention! We also used the hot baths - just lovey and a great way to relax after a cold day at the Silver Temple.
The bathrooms were quite dated and our toilet smelled a little - not enough to make our stay uncomfortable. The air conditioning was loud so we would warm the rooms up at night and then switch it off, making it chilly in the mornings. (This is a Western-traveller specific complaint) - the quilts on the futon were a little short, but then again I am quite tall and I just coped and wore socks to keep my feet warm!
Nice and easy to adapt to Ryokan style hotel in a good location for Kyoto. Right in the main area.
Best traditional japanese breakfast ever!!! A must try! Welcome reception with green tea and mochi pieces was very nice too.
The price was a bit much, but well worth it.
Apart from location (near shijo), everything else was bad.
Staff was inexperienced - On the day of check out, I wanted to leave my keys on the reception as I wanted to have my breakfast nearby. Unfortunately, the young male staff thought I was checking out (even though I had no luggages) and requested me to make payment. I declined and told him I'm going to get my breakfast before coming back to check, out. Once I return from my breakfast, he immediately made me pay for the fees which I deemed inappropriate. It was an unpleasant act. Furthermore, I was firmly rejected when I requested for late checkout and to make things worse, a chaser call at 10am sharp was made to the room when I was just about to vacate.
