A very unfriendly team - very untypical for Japan! When we arrived at noon, we had to wait till the official check-in (3pm) time for our room - the staff was not helpful or apologizing that no earlier check-in was possible. When asking for renting a bike the next day, the staff told us that there was no problem at all or need for reservation. But when we came for rent the next morning, no bikes were available because they were all broken (as they told us).
Quite place if that's what you're looking for. In suburbs of Kyoto.
Further away from public transit than expected. Need to walk at least 10 minutes to the closest subway/rail system. Further from main town area than expected. Also nothing much to do at night past 7pm as all stores are closed by that time. Onsen more like a very big hot tub/heated pool. Rooms very very dated. Think price paid was way overstated for quality of the room. Meals not as good as anticipated. Hotel needs major updating. Expected more for money paid. Restaurant staff speaks limited English.
If you stay at Ranzan, take the half-board option, or don't bother to book it at all. The dinner and breakfast were absolutely amazing - more food than we could eat, but we finished it all! Every dish was exquisitely presented, and tasted heavenly. We found many interesting ingredients that we'd never tasted in our lives. Wonderful dining experience, with a view of a beautiful Japanese garden. The Western style rooms were average though. Clean, but forgettable. The public baths were mid-sized, clean but also nothing special. The location was okay - about 3 mins on a busy main stretch then 10 mins on a quieter road to get to the Ryokan. If you're bringing luggage, expect them to go rattling along the uneven roads for a while.
The room smelled like cigarettes upon entry. After turning on the AC, more cigarette smoke seemed to be slowly seeping into the room via the ducts. A little annoying since we requested for a non-smoking room.
