We were given a Western style room, which was disappointing. The bathtub in our room looked like it hadn't been recently used or cleaned... likely because most guests make use of the large hot springs bath. If we had arrived earlier in the day, we may have been able to request change to a tatami room. You had to sit in the lobby for WiFi.
The staff were very friendly and accommodating (apparently, I had booked for the wrong days on booking.com and they switched to the two days I wanted without a fuss). The large hot springs bath was wonderfully relaxing and they provided everything you would need (yukata robe, towels, shampoo, conditioner, soap, face wash, toner, lotion, hair brushes, toothbrushes, etc). The traditional Japanese breakfast included was amazing and very filling and nutritious. We looked forward to it every day. The location right along the river and near the Togetsukyo bridge was scenic and ideal for exploring the Arashiyama area, although it was a 20 minute hike from the JR train station (so have a rolling suitcase or take a taxi). Beautiful grounds. Walking distance to the Togetsukyo Bridge area and river walk, the Tenryuji temple and gardens (must see!) and Bamboo grove. Would definitely go back!
