Score from 406 reviews Wonderful
The friendly owner offers pickup at the station, which was very convenient. Located short walk from the beautiful hida folk village. Had great stay with group of friends. Would recommend to anyone.
Location on the edge of town, near the folk village. We had a very nice quiet room. Service to town from hotel. Also bus came a block away.
Difficult for an old man to get out of his ryokan bed.
Mr. Murayama is a really nice person, very concerned about the guests. The room was really good, inclusive the yucata to use after spend some time in the owsen. Perfect!
The ryokan is a little bit far from the center os Takayama, but you can easily catch a bus or have a 30 min walk.
Room was very pleasant and very clean. Our host was very helpful and friendly. Dinner was delicious! Thoroughly recommend!

Close doors at night
Given the other positive reviews I was expecting this place to be comfortable and homey and it was basic and far too large to be personable. It's location is also an issue. yes they have a shuttle service to the train station but is relatively far from the old historic part of town which is especially charming in the evenings when the crowds have gone. Strolling the quiet streets required a cab ride back to the ryokan. The "spa' itself, was generic at best-absolutely nothing special or inviting. The rooms quite basic. More like a youth hostel than 'country inn'.
Nothing, i was am awful stay
The cleaners enter in the room without authorization, while we were having breakfast. They move all the luggage to clean the room before our check out. The carpet needs to be substitute, very old with stains on it. Awful breakfast, do not have any meal in this place Very far away from Takayama, 35 minutes on foot through a road not prepared for pedestrians Choose another place to stay, the value for prize is awful too expensive for low quality and poor service
The staff was very kind, the experience was authentic. The continental breakfast was ok, Japanese was wierd to us, so if you don't know it don't get it.
The rooms have no toilets and bathrooms, they're shared. The place is simple, too simple maybe. Just a place to sleep in. We did not know how simple the place will be, not at all fancy.
Onsen Cosy Delicious breakfast Good service Attentive boss (Mr Murayama)
The location is abit far to walk into town. You can take the local bus but there is timing. After that, you have to walk back or take a taxi.

The food The staff The location was right next to the hida folk village They have a private onsen room for couples
The location was a little bit of a home with out a taxi
Enjoyed the option of having a Japanese dinner.
Owner goes out of his way to make guests feel welcome. Good deal for a ryokan with bath.
Lack of basic english speaker except the owner. Cold water pipe went dry for some time when the place was fully occupied.
Friendly, helpful staff. Wonderful location. Spacious, clean, traditional rooms. Convenient shuttle bus pick up. Lovely outlook. Tasty meal options. Excellent ofuro.
The public bath was really nice and there was a shuttle back to the station. It is near the Hida Folk Village, just a 10 minute walk away. Also has a nice view from the hill it sits upon.
The location is far from the station and we walked to there. It took 30 minutes with luggage (most likely faster without) and half of it was uphill.
Great value for money - our cheapest stay in Japan by far. Our "bed" was ready for us when we arrived (unlike our last ryokan), and it was quite comfortable. The room was spacious, and the female toilets and bath house are spanking new.
The room had a faint smell of smoke. The decoration looked a bit shabby. The male toilets and bath house haven't been renovated. The location isn't the most practical if you haven't got a car.
Not near amenities and eating places. Difficult to find eating places without a car.
Atmosphere was great fun. Excellent morning bus shuttle. Great night dining in with Irori. Just a little out of town but then woke up to birds and Forrest out the window. Worth it!
Just a little out of town. Onsens don't gave views but reflective in price.
The room was large and quiet. We woke up in the morning to singing birds.
Hot water was irregular.
The complementary pick up and drop off are so helpful for any traveller/s, because you will be hardly travel without baggages on a transit leisure trip, like Takayama which is small but CHARMING.
We got picked up at the train station. It was in a picturesque setting on the hillside within walking distance to the folk village. The room was very large and the spa great.
A very good experience for a very reasonable place. It is the perfect balance between the full Japanese ryokan experience and the classic western hotel. The staff is very friendly and speak good english. Highly recommended
There is nothing that I specifically didn't like, not everything was displayed in english, for example the washing machine, but the staff is very friendly and most of the employees speak surprisingly good English. It is a little far from the station, but the location is lovely and they offer a bus navette service for free a couple of times a day
The traditional Japanese-style room was really nice and the tatami was comfortable. The toilet and bathroom were well-maintained and arranged. They were very clean though we have to share with all residents. The hot spring was great. I had a great time and gained an unforgettable experience of Japanese-style living there. Ryokan Murayama will definitely be my choice if I visit Takayama again.
The free shuttle buses were too early.
Staffs are very friendly. Love the onsen. Thank Hod has free shuttle service every morning
A bit far from Takayama town.
murayama is very good
