The staff. Very nice and helpful. The professionalism of the hosts: have many information on the area and events and know the Nagano region very well. Clean and huge rooms. Curtains : a plus when you like to sleep in the dark. Quiet place and very friendly people The spa is absolutely quiet and clean. Nice view on the city. I recommend you this place.
The Yumoto's made us feel so welcome and took care of everything for us. The onsen was relaxing. The Japanese breakfast was delicious and the Monkey park was a great experience. We would like to stay at Shimaya in the winter to go skiing. We highly recommend!
Good location close to train station. Very friendly and helpful owners, drove us to the Monkey Park entrance and then came back and picked us up when we were finished. They also recommended restaurants and drove us there. Rooms are very clean and tidy, breakfast was great each morning and onsen was perfect after a long day sight seeing.
The owner is friendly.
They offered us use of the outdoor hot tub, but didn't tell us they would charge us both extra. They didn't give us a towel for it so had only the one each from our rooms which we needed for showering as well. They don't supply shower gel or hair conditioner. Just a bar of soap and sachet of shampoo and toothbrush. The shower smelt a bit due to the hot springs. The dining room has no natural light and there isn't a good space to chill so for day light hours it's bedroom or lobby. During breakfast a piano plays (by disc), the music is dated. They wouldn't let me have black tea in my room instead of green tea even though they had black tea for breakfast.
Very friendly helpful hosts.
The owners were wonderful people making sure we were taken care of. This was our 1st experience in a traditional ryokan and onsen. A perfect place to have the experience. The western breakfast was very good.
The owener has a great serviced mind. Hotel is nice and clean.
The owner went out of his way to help us, driving us to the monkey park and the station. Lovely, large Japanese style room, quiet and well situated for the monkey park. Outdoor onset was great!
Uphill walk with luggage was a little taxing, though it's not that far. Futon mattresses take getting used to!
Yumoto-san and his wife are amazing hosts. We were greeted right away and he walked us through our plans during our stay, giving wonderful suggestions. My husband and I would stay here again in a heart beat.
The owners of this place are adorable and they drove us everywhere, gave us useful recommendations for restaurants and places to visit Authentic Japanese experience, you will sleep on tatami floors on your futon, fantastic! Private onsen is very romantic Get breakfast, it's full of good things, from coffee and milk, to eggs, cereals, fruit, bread and jam, etc.
Nothing, everything was perfect
Room condition Staff attitude
friendlyness of staff
The owners! Very nice people who drove us to the monkey park and fetch us from the train station.
Not enough time to enjoy everything! Also, the rainy weather...
Friendly and helpful owners and staff. Japanese style breakfast was great. Private use of outdoor onsen.
The staff were so friendly and helpful. They dropped us off at the Monkey Park the following morning. Location in Yudanaka was great, we also stayed one night in the Shibhu Onsen town but this can easily be visited to by foot.
Sleeping conditions were excellent, really good experience on the floor, very comfortable We appreciated prepared hot water for the green tea
We stayed at Shimaya for 2 nights. The staff couldn't have been more friendly and welcoming. The traditional ryokan rooms were spacious and comfortable. We enjoyed being able to use the private onsen which added to our whole experience of the area. It is an easy 5 minute walk to the yudanaka train station. Mr Yumoto happily drove us to the monkey park and gave us some good ideas of what to do in the area. If you are looking for a humble, family run ryokan to stay in, this is the place for you. It was a wonderful example of down to earth, friendly Japanese country living.
It is a traditional japanese hotel with tatami mats and futons. I was there at the end of march and it is snowing. At the train station the travel service called the hotel and they pick me up. The room had airconditioning with a good heater. The private hotel onsen was very comfortable and warm. Hot water was included in the room accommodation
We had a wonderful stay at Shimaya. It was raining when we arrived and the owner kindly picked us up from the train station. He also drove us to and from the entrance to the monkey park. He even let us borrow snow boots. The Japanese breakfast was delicious. I would definitely stay here again.
The family who run this guesthouse/hotel/ryoken are very experienced and excellent at meeting all their guests needs. We arrived too late for dinner but we were told by other guests that the food was excellent. Our triple japanese style room was very spacious with a little extra space on an alcove and a larger than normal entrance area - which was very useful with three large pieces of luggage. The futons were also slightly more comfortable than others we had experienced. The doonas are gorgeous (pillows not!). The hosts go out of their way to meet the transport needs of all guests, taking to and from the monkey park and also the train station. They even provide gumboots for the walk up the monkey park path. Like most of Japan, it was spotlessly clean and tidy.
It was a little hard to find, despite the excellent directions provided, as the name wasn't in English at the front of the hotel/ryoken. TV is useless for english speakers as there are no english speaking channels, but we found that to be the case at every place we stayed - it seems no-one gets cable TV in Japan. Like all japanese style accommodation, the charge is per person, not per room, so for a family it becomes quite a bit more expensive than a regular hotel room. This is definitely not the fault of Shimaya, but we tried to use the onsen but simply couldn't even put our foot in because it was boiling hot. Quite disappointing as we had had one previously and were looking forward to it as this town is well-known for onsens. The Japanese must have a higher heat threshold!

Everything! Wonderful ambiance. Friendly caretakers (Ichiro was great). Rooms were spacious.
The couple that runs the ryokan are amazing! They recommended nearby food and activities, drove us to the monkey park and train station, and made sure we borrowed boots for the short hike to the monkey park (they were necessary because of the mud). Best service. Japanese style breakfast was delicious.
The staff are wonderful, very helpful.
