we were very excited to experience a traditional Japanese house. The staff were exceptionally nice and helpful. The room was large with a nice indoors balcony (japanese style). If you're looking for a modern new fancy place this isn't for you, but if you like to experience a truly traditional Japanese place and be comfortable this is a great place and very close to the heart of Kyoto.
Good location.very close to MarutamachI station and can see the imperial palace from the door. Cozy ,quiet and stylish. The owners offer very best services.
Great location, very clean, comfortable futons - all and all it is a great place to stay for a few nights while in Kyoto. It is located near the Imperial Palace, 5 minute walk to a subway, or $10-$15 taxi ride from main attractions in the Kyoto area. Don't expect a 5 star resort accommodation, but this is a very cute place that will take you back in time!
The two old lady who ran the place. The room. The hot bath. The location. Great time there!
The 12 o clock curfew.
It's really nice to stay here. The facilities were clean and modern even if we didn't stay in an ensuite room. Will choose here again if I visit Kyoto.
The hosts didn't speak English well so there were some difficulties about communication. But they were willing to help if we asked.
These Japanese angels not only rushed out to meet our taxi, they took our luggage to our room, following it up with tea and cookies. Every day we came 'home', the tea and bikkies were there. They even did our washing for nothing, acted as tourist guide and concierge all rolled into one!
If you want a luxury 5 star hotel, this isn't for you. Floorboards are creaky and sound proofing could be better but it's a great experience and probably my fav of our 3 wk japan trip!
Excellent friendly service. Good atmosphere.Quiet in center of town.
Time limits for shower and bath.
To live in a real Japanese environment
For what it really is, The price is a bit overdone...
Tougetsu is a pretty little Ryokan. The two ladies who runs it are very nice and try to speak English. The Ryokan is close to a subway station and the Imperial Palace. We had a great time experiencing this Japanese way of living.
Our room neighbor was quite loud, the paper walls do not reduce noise. Also the bedding is getting a bit to long in the tooth. It was like staying at my grandma´s house.
Lovely, traditional Japanese Inn. We were wonderfully looked after by the lovely, friendly owners who made our stay there unforgettable. Would not hesitate to recommend staying here.
This is a great traditional stay, no thrills but well worth it so long as you are happy on futons on the floor. Good location. Lovely ladies who run it are very helpful.
We were there for three nights, and glad it wasn't any longer - the stairs are steep, and so a little awkward to use - for an older person at least.
The two ladies very friendly! They helped us and made the stay very agréable! Very clean house! We spent à very good Time there and we recommand the Ryokan.
À bit difficult to find, no sign in latin writing. But as people were so friendly we could find it after a short time.
Uniqueness of the property. This is a traditional large Japanese house turned into inn. If you had Japanese relative in Kyoto, this is the kind of stay you could have. It is in residential area, and walking distance to Kyoto Gosho and Kawaramachi Dori for shopping and food. The owners are very helpful. WiFi worked reliably. And even though this is Japanese style inn, they offered large bath towels for westerners, big pillow in addition to small pillow, and shower was available in addition to traditional deep hot bath tub. It has western style toilet as well as Japanese style ones. The house is old but very well maintained. Our room had brand new tatami mats with fresh green tint and smell, which is a treat for a Japanese, but also the indication that the owner takes good care of the property to keep it in good condition, without modernizing completely and lose the charm of the property. I also appreciated that the fellow travelers appear to be quiet and mature guests that appreciate the place, rather than people just looking for any cheap place to stay, and I hope it will remain that way.
Personally, I loved everything. I am filling out this section only because I do not want people to get disappointed because they did not know about it before they come; this place is not for everybody. I do not recommend this place for travelers who do not want deal: stair cases, shared sinks for brushing teeth and shaving, shared bath/shower that we need to take turns, shared toilets, sleeping on the floor with tatami/futon matt, no lock on the door, midnight curfew. Baths are available only certain hours. Walking: you need to walk to get to breakfast and dinner. Also, I would not bring little kids unless you are willing to watch them very closely not to poke hole in paper screen doors, or tumbling down the staircases.
very friendly staff and helpful who could understand common english words. value for money if one would like to experience traditional japanese home living.
Laundry service which we weren't expecting. Friendly staff
Late curfew would be better. 12 is too early for young people!
feeling like you stay at your Japanese grandma)))
2 owners quite nice and good takecare to the guests. If you finding ryukan with quality and budgetting please think of this place.
Location, the traditional Machiya building, the garden, the bath, ladies in charge - for a Japanese person like me it was like staying at grandma's.
Cash payment, curfew (23:00 for bath & 00:00 for coming back at night), shared toilet & bath - I had to book this place because everywhere else was completely full. Some things were quite inconvenient & expensive for a business trip. Perhaps more appropriate for families with (young) children.
The two ladies who run this hotel are very nice and helpful...the room is comfortable. Full of family feel
The facilities are bit old...but very clean...so if u are looking for sth new n nice. Not here.
I cannot add anything to Patricks comments, except that during our stay the WiFi worked!
