The facilities were very nice and well maintained
Location (distance from the towns & trails), Difficulty with planning for English speaking guests
Didn't stay for second night
The location is beautiful and the actual building is stunning.
Our room had a distinct urine smell and we were surprised we had to pay 100 yen / hour for the AC (I get the reasons behind it, but it was definitely an annoyance). It was not a cheap stay when you factor in buses on the island and I wouldn't say the ambiance was worth it. Bike rentals were pricey. Be sure to bring some snack foods, as there is not much around.
Clean, definitely worth the price, onsen and izakaya near by. Convenient in terms of buying tickets, getting bus schedule information and planning day trips. The staff is helpful if asked for particular things.
It's a long trip from the main port and the 10pm lights out is very strict. Sometimes the staff were not at the front desk. Outside drinks are not allowed to be brought in to the hostel.
Nice located in the pampas. Beautiful landscape.
Bus to the port takes over 1 hour. Only 1 bus in the hour.
Can't shower after 10pm
Fantastic setting Clean traditional styled ryokan Friendly English speaking staff (very broken but can still get across infomation) Sells the one and tell day bus tickets Car and bicycle hire Laundry facilites
Located a long way from other facilities, however a price worth paying if you want something a little more rural and traditional
Customer service and staff friendliness!
Everything quite good
No wifi on rooms! Air conditionate not free, 1€/hour!!! And it was really hot on september.
The hostel had a nice atmosphere and the full wooden building made it a cosy stay. The facilities were all very clean and Wi-Fi, TV, cables, etc. were available. The location is far out, which is a plus for some and a minus for others. All in all it was a nice stay.
Dinner and breakfast need to be booked to much in advance. More flexibility would be better. The island itself has great potential, however infrastructure is too bad. Buses run too infrequent on the whole island. However, if you want to relax and have time for your own - Yakushima Youth Hostel is a good choice.
-Full wooden building -Can sell bus passes, bike and car rental -Eco-certification -Sento
-Thin walls -Hikers wake up at 4 am and families can be noisy until 12 pm -Do not provide meals for the arrival day and the day after, require to phone them several days before (do not check the emails sent) -Redundant meals
It's a lovely facility.
It seems there has been a history of inconsiderate guests, judging from the number of rules and the fees for everything. I've visited youth hostels in Japan that have managed all this with more grace. When I finally got to my room (after reminding the host that I'd booked a private room, not a double bunk) there was a machine on the wall to pay for A/C by the hour. It wasn't the cost that bothered me so much as the fact that there's no mention of this cost in the advertising. I'm in favour of energy conservation, but the experience left me feeling like I was the guilty former guest who'd left the A/C on all day...and that I'd need to be on the look out for additional fees...perhaps a charge for shutting the door on my way out? When the internet service went down on my final morning--I needed it to confirm my next night's lodging in another town--a man came to check the charger and told me the internet was down because of the thunder. I noticed that Japanese guests were also put off by the rules and fees--so it wasn't just a language barrier thing.
Staff were not friendly，spa facilities were closed all the time. Information counter was closed all time and needed to walk to the rest house of hostel manager , however, there was a big dog that let you stop to go there. Air conditioning needed to pay extra and no fan supply.
