Best to go when there is no snow.
Best to go when there is no snow. Get a taxi to the Karlag/gulag museum that is just outside of town. You can also book an English tour guide for that museum to learn more. The city's central park is nice and there are many good restaurants in the city. An easy weekend trip in Kazakhstan from Astana.RaquelUnited States of America

As a tourist from the West fascinated with the former USSR staying in a Krushchevka in a city with a strong Soviet Heritage was a real novelty and it has been fun telling my friends about that. Rimir helped me get to Karlag which is a very sobering and educational experience. Bar has good cappuccino coffee and cold beer (loco and German). It's well know hotel so everybody (taxi drivers) know where it's located.
