Score from 93 reviews Very good
The grounds and property are very interesting and superbly kept Rooms are great. Staff is excellent
Breakfast selection was small but what was provided was very good.
Elegantly appointed with a lovely ambience. The decor is a visual feast for the eyes with beautiful things everywhere. The service was very good -.staff very helpful. The gift shop has an excellent selection of semi-precious jewellry. The hotel is a little bit out of the city centre but it is within walking distance and I very much enjoyed the 15 mins or so stroll. Complimentary bikes are provided.
Mosquito nets around the bed a bit claustrophobic but you can have them tied them back. Restaurant prices on the more expensive side.
There is too much to itemised . But the bottom line is - it was one of the best places we have stayed for a long time. Comfort in beautiful settings with attentive staff but not encroaching
The chanting at the temple next door for the festival of lights
WARNING: Do not pre pay this hotel, it is in decline. Our stay at Satri House was most disappointing and we left early. Our first night was unfortunately disturbed by noisy guests in the next door room (the hotel receives Chinese tour groups) so we were particularly ill prepared for the second night when we had to move rooms in the middle of the night. Many of the condensing units for the hotel’s air conditioning are situated above the second floor bedrooms on the roof, so when certain units are running bedrooms will experience uncomfortable and disturbing vibrations. A noisy air con can be overcome to some degree by wearing ear plugs, but vibration noise cannot be eliminated. So on our second night, when some other guests went to bed and turned on their air con unit, we were woken to the awful noise of their condensing unit kicking into life above our bedroom. The night staff looked around to find another room, but since this was a general problem in the hotel only one available room could be found. Unfortunately it was not big enough to properly accommodate an extra bed for our son. The following day a search was made for another room, and were offered a choice of their best rooms, but sadly as much as we liked the décor, the top suite room also suffered vibration noise and the room below smelled strongly of damp. Since no ‘quiet’ room could be offered we had to find an alternative hotel, which was a shame as we had only a few days in which to enjoy Luang Prabang. We sought out a comparable hotel and moved to the Luang Say Residence, which was lovely and can certainly be recommended. It was clean and fresh, lots of staff and an incredibly beautiful clear pool. The hotel has been attractively laid out but it seems to be in decline.
The entire ambiance is reminiscent of the gentility of old Laos. It's still alive and well at Satri House. Food was outstanding. Massages sublime. The staff provided us a home away from home. We will definitely return!
The food at the restaurant was not tasty and much too expensive (mainly dinner). The service at the restaurant was slow and partial. The air-condition in our room was old and functioned poorly.
What did we like? The handsome room with four working french doors, two on each side. The four-poster bed with mosquito netting of natural, organic materials, and clearly handmade. A really good Asian art collection. Two green tiled pools large enough for lap swimming, but the water is bracing. A sun hat on each lounge chair. Service very unobtrusive. The hotel suggested an inexpensive tuk-tuk for the short ride to the airport. The air of quiet discretion and restraint, impossible to find in the US for any money. Our next hotel was a typical 5 star and after Satri House it seemed totally lacking in style and taste, in fact, a little gross.
Breakfast choices were limited and brought to the table, rather than casual grazing for a bit of this and that. But french baked goods were first rate so a minor compliant. The open dining room could be chilly. The toilet room had its own little sink but no place for a towel.
The service was very poor. There was no eating in the room, restaurant, spa while it can be cold at that time of the year (December/ January) which is a disgrace for an hotel of this category and this price. The senior staff was unable to attend our request and no discount or gesture of good will was offered on our departure. Overall a very bad experience.
The hotel has been beautifully restored and enlarged. The bed was the best one we had in Asia. The bathroom and bath in particular was very nice. The breakfast was nice and a welcome change from buffets. Henry (or Henri?) was excellent at sorting out our dinner reservations and a problem we had on checkout.
The room smelt bad and while they responded, the corrective actions were a little hard on the lungs (burning fragrant oils). The staff, while trying hard, is poorly trained; they need to be more attentive and they need to speak better English (I only say this based on the price which is a luxury price). It's not a great location. If I went again a would stay further in the action, but I appreciate some people like a quieter more out of town location. Better value for money could have been had.
We stayed in 2 hotels in Luang Prabang and the other one (Souvannaphoum) was much better compared to this one. Some examples: - I expect from a hotel with this price that emails will be answered, but they were not - Staff was not good at speaking English - Hotel couldn't provide breakfast when I had to take an early flight - Internet (in the room) was not working all the time - Phone in the room was not working - It took more than 1 hour to finish the bill, and after that I discovered that the amount was wrong.
Satri House is a marvellous place in a central but quiet area of Luang Prabang. Very friendly staff, beautiful and very tasteful decoration which perfectly matches the Asian with French style. We loved the French breakfast with homemade local jams.
