The location is awesome and the staff are incredibly friendly.

Because the location is so great (middle of plantation nowhereness) it takes 35 minutes up a bumpy track to get there - but it is worth it.

Sanath the manager is a lovely man and always keen to help.

The location next to the waterfall is great but what you don't expect is the extreme noise from the water! After just a few minutes the deafening noise of the water flowing down becomes unbearable. We booked this place after reading the Lonely Planet review saying it is perfect for honeymooners....it is not as it is extremely difficult to relax here due to the noise and the horrible moistness in the air. Shame! I would not recommend this place to anyone and will be contacting Lonely Planet to advise them to change their review urgently before more people book here and have a terrible time. Also, the Booking.com site said that there is wifi available at the hotel. This is not true. Please change the info on your site.

What an intresting place! No photograph can capture the atmosphere that reigns! In the past, it is the home of a famous scientist, his books on various sciences are everywhere. Now hotel belongs to his heirs, but there's still an old colonial atmosphere of England in every corner . I would also like to note a restaurant with good food and reasonable prices, the chef prepared especially for us and it was delightfully delicious. Pool is filled from the river once in two days, the water is cool and pleasant. Room is comfortable, with a fridge, a TV, DVD player, a working fireplace (which dries the clothes . it becomes a little wet because of the proximity to the river). Bathroom plain, but clean, neat, have some amenities. The hotel definitely not going to like everyone, but who likes to find really interesting places, gems of the country, this place definitely applies to them 100%

To the hotel is very difficult to find if you are traveling driving yourself, Google-maps shows wrong, local people knows nothing too. Tip - if you are driving yourself, guide - Hotel Plantation, go after it straight 100 meters, then turn right (up) (in front of it there is a small sign of this hotel, but it is difficult to see), and no turning drive on this road up 6 km, a mark of what you have arrived is the bridge with a waterfall on your right and a small parking lot on your left, there is no hotel sign. Go down the stairs to the pool, bar and restaurant is a reception. Also in the hotel does not have WiFi and therefore they do not accept payment by credit card.

Beautiful small hotel in mountain setting next to river. Very difficult to find as it is up the mountain 6km from the main road but takes 25 mins as small rough road up the mountain. Very remote. Good for hikers. Not good if you want to go in town As it is a hike getting back and forth from hotel. Great if you want to relax for a few days.

Quirky and unique. An amazing location virtually ON the River at the end of a 7km track through a rubber planation. We arrived at dusk and thought we'd never get there! The hotel is remote and tiny. We were an extended family of 9 and took the whole place over. The Manager was lovely and so helpful and obliging and seemed to work 24/7. We ordered in advance for our 2nd night, a Sri Lankan rice and curry supper (not on the standard European menu which we had had the night before). They cooked it just for us and it was absolutely delicious. Staying at the Royal River was a unique experience and one we wouldn't have missed it for the world. I shall remember it always. It is a great location for white water rafting at Rafters Retreat.

The standard menu caters to European tastes and we didn't find the food much to our likiing. BUT (and it is a big but) the next morning we ordered in advance, and received, a delicious authentic Sri Lankan cury and rice supper especially made for all 9 of us on our second evening. There is a constant RUSH of water noise so you have to shout in the restaurant/bar but this just adds to the experience.
