This is the worst report I have ever lodged. The hotel appears to have had no money spent on maintenance since 1991 when the Russians left. We were the only guests in a 50+ room establishment, although it appears that only a dozen rooms are currently in use. The brickwork facades are spalling, the floors creak very loudly, the mattress is wonky, the sheets don't fit the bed, entry is only via the rear door (wheel your bags for exercise!) and more. Wi-Fi is available only in the bar, or should I say Officers' Mess? This Soviet-era battleship building on the left bank of the Daugava River appears to have housed senior officers and businessmen from the USSR era, with the "Other Ranks" housed in the other, no longer used, end of the building. Locals told me that there was formerly also a social club for the (Russian) locals. I have nothing against the Russians, but this supposed 3 star enterprise is an example of what can go wrong. Breakfast was served in the tiny Bar/Officers' Mess, the one with the weasel, ram and deer heads mounted on the walls. Somebody with vision and a few dollars should buy and renovate this place - it is in a great location but it needs a makeover and a business plan, and soon. This town has a rich history, including the loss of more than half of its population who were Jewish, in the early 1940's. This town is in a great location and has a great story. Here's hoping that they find a way to accent the positive, to provide reasonable accommodation and to tell their story much better.
Location is good, less than 1km by river bank walk from the town centre. However trying to drive there with a wife who is an invalid was a torment! This is summer, peak tourist season, yet the nincompoops who plan roadworks hereabouts have managed to block off the only entry to town across the Daugava River, as well as several major routes within the town centre. Traffic jams (on a saturday) extended for miles. Even the police, when they arrived, gave up and stayed in their car as useless observers. Jekabpils is slated to continue to experience this untill mid-July. Avoid the place unless you have real need to be there. We checked out a few other restaurants and hotels, but instead decided to stick it out for one day, then to move on. Maybe there is a good restaurant in town. We didn't find it. The Tourist Info person acted as though we were interrupting her siesta. My wife's mother came from here. This was her first visit, ever. There was no high point to this leg of our trip from Australia.
The location adjacent to the river ist great. The entire character ist somehow charming.
The staff ja highly committed but does hardly speak english.
