Dar Tahrya is a traditional bed and breakfast in the Talaâ dictrict of Fez. It offers air conditioned rooms, a hammam and two terraces overlooking the medina (historic quarter).
Score from 156 reviews Very good
Fatima was very helpful, giving me advice on things to do in Fez and picking me up in Place R'cif to take me to the riad. The breakfast was delicious, the sheets and room were clean and it had a heater, and the shower was hot. Very traditional riad.
The room was cramped (not much space between bed and wall) and smelled like drains (had it's own bathroom) which is probably an effect of it being an old house. The wifi didn't work in the room. I still had a lovely time!
Best thing about it was Fatima, who went out of her way to help us, guide us and save us when we got lost. Their food is incredibly good, be sure to order their lemon chicken, it's heavenly and far better than many restaurants in the old city. The other hotel staff, Ghitsa and Edrissia, were very sweet and friendly despite the language barrier. We felt like we were staying at someone's home rather than a riad. The place is pretty tiny and located off the main routes in the old city, which means you may get lost but it also saved us from a lot of noise and traffic we'd have had if we'd stayed somewhere central. Fatima also took us to a local hammam for a truly authentic experience, which we absolutely enjoyed despite it being a bit intimidating. And last of all, their incredible strawberry-lemon-mint juice is out of this world. Fez has some of the most delicious fruit I've ever tried in my life but this juice was just insanely good. Definitely recommend this place if you're on a budget and need a secure place with people you can trust, good food and decent bedding.
This place is very close to the heart of the medina. Probably the closest to Masjid Qarawiyyin which was ideal for us! The staff are fab! Especially FATIMA! She helped me in purchasing argan oil and hamam ingredients. Quite a homely feel to it. We were provided with a heater which was very much needed during Fes' cold night (January time). All the bedrooms require stairs to get to so not ideal for those who struggle with stairs. I would most likely return to stay there again the next time I go to Fes.
I was very sad that our bathroom was not connected to our bedroom. This made me consider leaving the first night as I thought I would struggle. HOWEVER, I am so glad I stayed!!! The homely feel and the lovely Fatima made it all worthwhile to stay.
The staff is incredibly helpfull, providing good tips as to where to eat and buy stuff, as well as interesting things to do around the city. It´s a warm, family-run hotel right in the centre of Fes El-Bali (only a few hundred meters into the medina from Place Rcif). Though it´s located in a dodgy-looking alley that is not easy to find, you´ll have no problem getting back there on your own once you know where it is. I´d recommend making arrangements for the staff of the Hotel to pick you up at Place Rcif or paying a few dirham to any local willing to take you there the first time you arrive. The terrace, overlooking the medina with the mountains in the background, is certainly a big plus. The breakfast is good, and will certainly get you going until lunch time.
First and foremost, the pictures are quite misleading. They do show the actual rooms and shared areas in the hotel, but not quite as they look today. We were highly disappointed by the incredibly small breakfast/dinner area, and ended up having breakfast in the terrace despite the weather being cold. The biggest downside of our room was its lack of privacy. We were located right next to the kitchen, from which we were separated only by an incredibly old door that provided no isolation whatsoever. We had to put up with the constant noise of the staff moving in and out of the kitchen, as well as with the smell of food being prepared. By the way, the food was astoundingly expensive (around three times as much as in any restaurant near Bab Boujloud, and twice as much as in higher-end restaurants located in fancy, old riads around the medina). We´d have loved to have dinner at the hotel, especially because the alley in which it´s located is not particularly inviting to go out at night, but had to settle for sandwiches bought from street vendors earlier in the day. Though the bathroom was "private", it was separated from the room and had no outside lock (therefore, we had to trust that no other guests or staff used it). Also, we found it to be on the dirty side, and there is a constant stench of humidity since there is no natural ventilation. The double bed was actually two single beds put together, so there was the constant problem of mattresses moving apart. Also, the sheets were not fitted, so if you´re propense to tossing and turning you´ll end up resting on the bare mattress in no time. The wifi signal was almost inexistent. The router is located in the upper floor, so barely any signal reached our room in the lower ground. I suppose this is less of a problem if you get one of the rooms in the upper floor, but still makes the claim that there is wifi in all rooms essentially false.
The Location is great, with a nice roof terrace with view of the Medina. Breakfast was great, could enjoyed it in the roof terrace when the sun was out in the morning. And bathtub in the private bathroom we got the second night, even though it was outside the room. And very friendly and helpful Fatima who does her best to help and she speaks very good English. Thanks for everything!
-The breakfast was big and really nice on the terrace -The staff were friendly and helpful -The location in the middle of the Medina was easy for visiting.
-For the first night of 2 the double room which we had booked had been given to someone else and we had to stay in a very small room with bunk beds, which was not very clean. Although the 2nd night when we got the room we had booked it was much more spacious and comfortable. (but we still had to wait till after 3pm untill the other guest had left and the room had been cleaned before we could get into our room)
Walking distance to everywhere in the Medina - Fatima was happy to organise anything for us, incl. meeting us to walk us to and from activities. Deceptively good shower; really hot and great pressure surprisingly! Beautiful roof terrace :)
When the Riad is full sometimes there was an issue with the power supply and the lights (and wifi) would cut out
They have a really nice and spacious terrace and serve really delicious breakfast. Also Fatima is always around if you need something.
We stayed there for 6 days, 5 of them were in the economic room and after 3 days it was not really comfortable, is too small and terribly dusty. Even though the hostel is located in the middle of Medina, after some time it starts to be a little bit frustrating as it is kind of difficult to find some good restaurants around or even to find away off the Medina's market.
Staff is really nice, it's close to everything you need, locals are lovely, breakfast is different but great, has a great view from the roof.
It was hard to find and just needs to be signed better, make sure when travelling to morocco to bring a pen to fill out form in airport to enter .
We only stayed one night but really enjoyed the place. Very good value for money, beautiful sunny roof terrace where Moroccan breakfast is served. Fatima is a great host, picked us up at midnight, and kindly let us borrow her hairdryer and shampoo!
Nothing major, shower tub was a bit clogged and door doesn't lock
Fatima is really nice, i had a very good experice, defenitly will come back if i go to fes .
Dar Chraibi has been, literally, our home in Fes. The lady run it, Fatima, is incredibly kind, nice and always propt to help you, even rescuing you if got lost in the Medina. Fantastic breakfasts.
Fatima was wonderful and informative.
bathroom was a bit airless.
Very helpful staff and nice place to stay in. Excellent value for money. Heating via radiator provided in winter which is a bonus. Staff have very good knowledge of English.
Can be a bit tricky to find initially but I am sure if you have a bit more practice it becomes transparent as to where the riad is. Staff arranged pick up at airport and also took me through the medina.
great staff! Fatima is very cute, will help with everything. find a location and deal in the city. the hotel is pleasant, beautiful. the view from the terrace is beautiful. The breakfasts delicious. There is hot water.
Everything is ok!
Fatima was a great host and provided a wealth of information regarding Fez and all your needs felt as if she was at hand to answer and allow you to explore the old medina of Fez. I enjoyed the ease the riad have me as a solo traveller and the room was perfect for my needs and if you want the old medina it's perfectly situated deep in the city. The traditional moroccan pancake breakfast was delicious with the variety of olives, jam etc. I also had a meal at the Riad and the food was extremely satisfying and tasteful between breakfast and supper there was no need for lunch.
Wifi didn't cover inside my room could only be as in was on the ground floor and not a big solution to this.
Fatima really takes care of you. She is a very nice girl and she goes out of her way to help you and give you advice, at one point she insisted in going out, in the rain, to change my money 15 minutes away because I didn't know where it was. I had never been to morocco before and she was a very warm and welcoming. I would recommend this place for anyone. Also Fatima makes very nice breakfast
Good access to central shopping and mosques etc. Bit of a walk (up hill) from nearest taxi access but that is inevitable if you want to be in the heart of the old city.
Fatima is extremely willing to help with any need you may run into, e.g. she will happily go exchange foreign currency for you.
Staying at Dar Chraibi was the best decision we made while planning our trip, without the help of the friendly staff, especially Fatima, it wouldnt have been the same. She was very friendly and caring and always there when we needed help. She even booked us a tour, took us to a traditional Hammam ( turkish bath) and had loads of useful tips what to do and where to go. The rooms were nicely decorated and clean and the food was delicious, nice view from the rooftop terasse. The hotel is a bit hard to find as the old city Medina has got loads of small laneways, but it wasnt a problem as Fatima came to pick us up when we arrived. I would recommend this place to everyone who wants to visit Fes and stay in the heart of the city, good value for money. Fatima makes the hotel feel like a home, welcoming and loving. Thank you again for an amazing holiday, we will come back!
Staff came to pick us up right outside the medina. Its pretty hard to find so that was great.
Fatima was a fabulous host, even offering to come and meet us if we were lost in the Medina, which is not an unlikely scenario! The food was great, breakfast was more than enough and the dinners they cooked were delicious. Fatima offered a transfer from the airport/train station and a guide to bring us to Riad, which we'd highly recommend as it makes life a lot easier as it is a bit hard to find on first arrival.
nice hostel: very good location, good price, friendly staff.
Good staff. We got many help from them.
Fatima is a lovely lady and very helpful with her advise.
- bathrooms are shared even tough it's not stated online; - horrible smell from bathrooms; - breakfast same 3 days long; - burned out candles and unusable staff covered by dust in room on 1st floor
