Commonly spelled Fez, this city was Morocco’s capital during Middle Ages. The city was originally composed of two separate settlements located along the banks of the Jawhar River. Madinat Fas was founded in 789 by Idris I, while Al-'Aliya was founded by his son Idris II. Both towns grew autonomously until the Almoravids unified them in 1070 under the name ‘Fas’. The city is still considered a beacon of the Islamic civilisation, due to its ancient ‘madrasas’ Islamic colleges.
The Old Town or ‘medina’ has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, representing one of the best preserved historic centres in the world. The famous ‘riads’ or small traditional hotels are located in the medina, which is also called Fes Al-Bali.

Fantastisk spennende, men passer nok ikke for alle. Ville ikke reist med småbarn eller om man er skeptisk og engstelig. Veldig vanskelig å orientere seg i medinaen og man kan bli lurt. Det kan man alltid. Opplevde de aller fleste som vennlige og nysgjerrige og stolte av byen sin (medianen). Spander en guide for å få innsikt i byens historie og bli litt bedre kjent. Be om "no shopping"; her må man innse at inntekt beror på salg og det alene, og da koster det mer å "slippe unna" kjøpepresset- det er sterkt tilstede og bygger også på intensiv pruting. Det er en forvirrende byplan og de historiske bygningene ligger svært diskret til og kan være vanskelige å se.
