A stunning property with quite sensational rooms. All the staff - and the owners - were superb and made us feel entirely at home. A very warm welcome, nothing is too much trouble. The food is also exceptional - breakfast was luxurious and dinner was of the best restaurant quality, but in a very relaxed atmosphere.
That we eventually had to leave.
we were the only guest after their busy holiday time so we were able to get an upgraded room. The staff made the visit the best experience. Staff was there every day to feed us breakfast, clean our room, greet us with smiles, etc. In the evening, the night guard walked us through the maze of streets in the medina to the dinner restaurant (Paul had excellent recommendations). Paul arranged a tour with a guide through the medina (500dh for two people). This was the first tour we have done, we typically discover things on our own, but the medina in Fes is huge! One half day we walked on our own and it was fine, but we didn't have a guide to point things out and explain things to us. so we decided to take the tour. It was an all day tour, lots of walking and it was worth it. Our guide, Fetta (he said like Feta cheese) was very knowledgeable and answered all of our questions both historical and cultural while on the tour. He studied english at the university so his english was perfect, and were were able to understand each other. I highly recommend a tour. the garden and terrace area a gorgeous. it is a beautifully renovated dar/riad that is quiet and relaxing after a day touring. The hammam was a good experience, one of the women scrubs you down from head to toe in a steamy, tiled room. My boyfriend did it too (we were together)! The room was heated, as were the bathroom floors, windows overlooked the garden on the first floor, it had plenty of space for us to relax, read, and connect with friends/family on the internet. The room had it's own wifi connection so the signal was strong. The bathroom toiletries were very good. The bed was comfortable and the pillows were perfect. The room had a coffee maker and water kettle. The shower had two shower heads and the water was hot (also in the sink, too). Breakfast was plenty of food, you can probably share one.
The restaurant was closed after the busy holiday season. On the guided tour, we visited the tannery, weavers (scarves and cloths), herbologist, and pottery shop. These stops included their own guide to explain processes and also show you the shops to buy items. There were also some other options but we chose to see the ones listed above. They were interesting and there is a push to buy items, but you can kindly refuse as we did. We are travelling a year so we can't buy a lot. Also on the tour, a grand taxi was hired to drive us around the outside of medina, also a hilltop view at old tombs, and the pottery shop stop. We should have asked the price, because we paid 200 dh for this driving tour, which wasn't that long and the pottery shop stop was the longest of the stops. My suggestion is to understand the costs in the beginning when the guide explains the tour in the beginning.
This was a really wonderful hotel, and I would love to stay there again. The garden and room were beautiful - in the room, lovely painted doors, balcony, local fabrics, and orange trees and fountains in the garden. The room was also very comfortable and well-designed, and the heating worked well, which was important for early January. The manager gave me good advice about things to see and places to eat good food, which I would not have found otherwise, and staff were available to accompany me when looking for a restaurant in the evening. The location is very good, relatively central and easy to find in the medina, but also peaceful once you are inside.
The wifi was a bit variable one day. Other than that, I can't think of anything that could have been better.
Oasis of tranquility with wonderful staff. Hammam a great experience. Cafe fez food exceptional.
