My husband and I were received by a guy (Hissan? not sure of exact spelling) who was courteous and tended to answer enquiries promptly with "don't worry madam", "no problem madam". He then introduced us to employ a guide to tour around the medina for half day. We agreed and made it clear to Hissan that we didn't want any shopping during the visit. Hissan agreed. As it turned out, the guide Hassan still led us to visit a carpet shop, an argan oil shop and a leatherwear shop. At the end of the visit, Hassan took us to a restaurant without consulting us. The restaurant turned out to be an expensive one catering solely for tourists. We decided that we had had enough of this guide and returned to the riad without taking lunch. At the riad, we asked Hassan how much we should pay him (since my husband and I could not remember the exact amount as told by the riad staff), we paid 400DH for the half day tour as requested by Hassan. We saw Hassan sharing some money with riad staff (Hissan was not there) after our payment. Later that day, Hissan told us that the agreed amount should be 250DH for 2 persons for half day. He said he would talk to Hassan and asked for refund. Hissan did not come back to us on this until my husband brought this up politely with him the next day. For some reason, he changed his usually friendly tone and said bluntly that there was no refund as we paid the extra "at our pleasure". We found his response even more frustrated than the guide's over-charging itself. Anyway, we managed to keep calm as we didn't want this to ruin our holiday mood. We just came back from a 3-week tour in Morocco. Except for Palais Batha, we had very wonderful experience staying in the other riads/hotels, whose staff were always forthcoming and more importantly , trustworthy. I would definitely not recommend my friends to stay in Palais Batha.
The room is god value for money, clean and spacious. Check-in smooth!
