the riad is clean the stuff is nice but you MUST pay with cash bc they cannot handle credit card payments well, to say at least. Overall its not a bad place, but expensive
We paid with our card, first they charged an incorrect amount that was cancelled after a few hours, we were at the reception the whole time, then the second time an incorrect amount was charged again, but we did not want to wait again and cancel so they gave us the difference in cash, which would have been ok, but the payment did not go through for some reason through insufficient funds (which was impossible as this was our 2nd leg of a 2 weeks trip and I have paid at 4 more different hotels afterwards without any problem). Then without any notice they charged our card again a few weeks later, which in my opinion was very unjust as it was their fault that the payment did not go trhough the first time, so an email notice would have been nice beforehand. I am not blaming the staff as they were nice and tried to help with their limited english knowledge, but the OWNER should handle these kind of things better!!!
Location right in the heart of the Medina. Wonderful old building beautifully decorated. Fatimha was really welcoming and showed us everywhere to eat and the hamman.
A bit noisy in the alley below at night but everything else was excellent. We had swing doors to the toilet which squeaked and woke the other person at night.
Very clean and safe Fatima who runs it is lovely
You don't get a front door key so have to ring the bell every time you come and go. Breakfast very boring Bit pricey really
Breakfast no so many choice & served in dark place instead of terrace
Very central location, beautiful facility, owner helpful (as was her English-speaking sister and, to some extent, her young nephew!), spacious & comfy room with external window for sea breezes and sitting area just outside that overlooked the living room. Toilet and sink in separate room from shower room (but see negative comments).
Bathroom saloon doors, while charming-looking, are extremely annoying to use (you'll see!) and impossible to open and close without waking up your roommate, plus ours (Pamplemousse Junior, 2nd floor) were directly in front of the twin beds, meaning absolutely NO privacy. Light in toilet/sink room kept cutting out...finally the 3rd time we just put a table lamp in there (hint, hint). A guest was smoking in the communal living room, which was annoying. The owner and her visiting family members talked until midnight both nights in their private area downstairs, which isn't enclosed so, although they were talking in a normal tone, it echoed loudly up to the rooms, which I doubt they're aware of so that's why I've mentioned it. Lovely place, though!
Riad Amana is a wonderful riad, very centrally located with extremely helpful staff. The room we stayed in (Paprika) was even bigger than it looked on the website, and felt really luxurious. Thank you.
There are some hotels that are just a place to sleep and then there are others which become your home away from home. We stayed at Riad Amana for seven days and by the end we were very sad to leave because we did feel very much at home. Therefore we naturally have a long list of things liked with the main ones being: -The staff. Both Franck (the owner) and Fatima (his right hand) have been very welcoming. Franck gave us a lot of advice on things to do, provided insight into life in Morocco and was in general a very good host and entertainer. Fatima made us feel very welcome and always helpful when we needed something. -Food. There is opportunity to order food to be prepared in the Riad by Fatima and her assistance. We really enjoyed all three of our meals and thought they were much nicer than going to a restaurant. -Location. The riad is very well position for discovering Essaouira and going to the beach. -Décor. Simple but tasteful and in Moroccan style we enjoyed it very much. -Fireplace. We loved sitting in the common area next to the fire place. Very cosy and a good opportunity to get to know other people staying at the riad. ...list goes on
Only thing we had a tiny issue with is that we travelled in winter which means that at night it is about 10 degrees. Traditionally in Morocco they do not have heating which is also true for this riad therefore the rooms where quite chilly. Though plenty of blankets where provided so sleeping was not an issue. Getting up in the morning could be more of a challenge.
Beautifully decorated Riad in good location. Communal seating area with log fire for cold evenings, television, books and games. owner and staff especially Fatima were friendly, informative and entertaining. Rooms were spacious, tastefully decorated and cleaned daily. Continental breakfast was plentiful, lots of bread with alternating days of croissants and pancakes. This is a lovely Riad that is worth a return visit.
The saloon doors to the bathroom.
The location is great and easy to find. The room was huge, nicely decorated in Moroccan furniture. The old lady who worked at the riad barely spoke English (and we barely spoke French) but we could tell that she was a sweet person trying to make our stay as comfortable as possible.
Too much bread for breakfast with not much variety. (This goes to many riads in Morocco) The room did not look like the pictures seen on booking.com and verychic. It was a dark room with old carpets barely covering the concrete floor. In fact, our room was recently re-painted and smelled like paint. We tried opening the windows all day, but there was so much noise coming from outside. It would have been better if they arranged us to another room. There was no light in the shower making it impossible to take one late at night. The shower tends to flood as well.
