I came here 10 years ago and bought the building -the ruin i should say- in March 2003. It took us 1,5 year to make it as it is now. The name "Watier" i chose from a french engeneer who saved the city from the sands early 20' century. This house is large and has 2 sides opened to the natural light, making the rooms bright and airy. The patio being rectangular has allowed us to design large rooms with plenty space and king size beds; all rooms have their sitting area and desk. Location in the heart of med

My two sons and I loved absolutely everything about Riad Watier and the lovely town of Essaouira. Our ground floor two level room was spacious, beautifully furnished, quiet and comfortable. The owner and staff were the most welcoming and helpful of any of the 12 places we stayed during our three weeks in Morocco. Essaouira itself was our favourite place with fabulous restaurants, beautiful huge clean beach, and by far the most relaxed no pressure shopping with the best selection and lowest prices. We really regret only staying two nights - at least three or four nights would have been perfect!
Apart from the great location, the spacious room, the roof terrace with a sea-view, the best breakfast we had in Morocco, Jean-Gabriel and his team went out of their way to help us during our stay. By 'out of their way' I don't mean they gave us extra coffee, I mean when, as naive tourists, we we're ripped off by an out of town Argan Oil Cooperative, JG jumped in his car, drove us out there, argued until we got our money back, then drove us back for a calming glass of wine afterwards. Morocco can be an overwhelming place, but Riad Watier is an oasis in many ways. And the town is lovely :)
First of all, amazing host. All the people there are extremely nice and helpful, giving you felling like you arrived home. The breakfast is great, perfect location, clean and tidy. Not even one bad thing
Ryad Watier was a perfect choice for our 5 night stay in Essaouira and Jean and his team were marvelous hosts. They gave us great tips for food and things to do and Mohammed, our cabbie was a great tour guide as well. Highly recommended and from May Essaouira airport will be open. Enjoy!
Very friendly, helpful owner-manager
Very friendly and helpful staff. Good breakfast. Large, pleasant room.
The wifi was great but didn't work in our bed so we had to sit up to surf. Smokers use the main courtyard which was our only window.
These guys made our entire trip to Morocco. Form helping organise a taxi from Marrakech to suggesting restaurants, recommending subsequent travel. We were made to feel at home and it was perfect! The masseuse is brilliant!
Having to leave
Location - right in the medina. Physical layout of hotel and ambience. Interesting artwork everywhere. Room spacious and comfortable. Heating provided but not required. Constant hot water. Comfortable large bed. Supply of books in several languages superb breakfast on roof terrace. Welcoming and interesting hosts. Great restaurant recommendations.
Everything!!!! I really recommend it and i will be back for sure.
Not exactly a criticism as breakfast was delicious and fresh and beautifully presented on the roof terrace with a lovely view of the sea - but a little variety for those staying more than two nights would be welcome. Also, and this a personal preference, I prefer a softer pillow.
Fantastic welcome - Jean Gabriel met us at the bus station and arranged a porter for our luggage. He also arranged our return to the airport and 'buddied' us with other guests to reduce the costs. He made excellent recommendations for dinner and made reservations for us. He is a fantastic host, taking personal interest in all his guests and their personal comfort. He has created a wonderful space at the riad - it is beautifully decorated and has a great art collection. The riad is right in the heart of the medina, but it is very well sound-proofed, a real oasis of calm and tranquility. The evening meal we shared around a large table with other riad guests was friendly, delicious and good value for money.
We couldn't have dreamt about getting anyting better! The Riad Watier is kept spotless clean and well managed by Hayat and the owner Jean Gabriel. They created loving, welcoming and beautifully decorated place that feels like family home. Home of art, open hearts and minds. We had a chance to meet Jean Gabriel just one last day of our stay, because he was away for Christmas and our 4 years old son who usually keeps distance to newly met people, he started playing with him like with long known loving uncle! During our stay that was Hayat who was in charge. She was always there for every our need. She made sure we were feeling good in every minute. On the first day after delicious breakfast served with no delay on roof terrace by very nice and warm kitchen lady, Hayat gave us a tour around Riad, explaining everything and untroducing to other quests that we met on our way and to Charlie and Charlotte birds and Cuscus and Tajine turtoises living under bookshelf in library room. The first day we had dinner in Riad that was just delicious. The fire was adding cosiness and warmth. Our small children known of being fussy with trying new kitchen dishes were served with spagetti cooked especialy and separately for them. Our appartment consisted with spacious living area, separate spacious bedroom area and bathroom (beauty) room:) the beds were more than comfy and wide and bedding spotlles crisps white. Our daugther was crying when we were leaving. She loved our princesses apartment. The windows were just above the entrance facing small passable back yard with local water supply (tap). We can watch locals daily life routines, fishes being cleaned, water taken in plastic bottles loaded on two wheeled carriages, children playing in the evenings. All noises (if any at all) were ceased by about 9:30pm. Every wall of Riad is decorated with original paintings, every corner you can find interesting sculpture or artwork. There is cosy fireplace area with large unusual log burner.
Staff and facilities are superb. Professional and very welcoming. It felt like staying with friends. We would definitely recommend this riad.
Ryad Watier was everything we had hoped for. Our hostess Hayat made every possible effort to ensure our welcome, comfort and enjoyment of the hotel and the city. We also enjoyed our 2 dinners and could not leave without some of the recipes!
That we couldn't stay longer!
My husband and I and our two young children stayed at Ryad Watier recently and I thoroughly recommend it to anyone who visits Essaouira. Hayat and her staff were wonderful - warm and helpful and very welcoming. The breakfast on the roof terrace (with a great view) was delicious and plentiful. The rooms are very clean and tastefully decorated with very comfortable beds. Hayat's recommendations for eating out were perfect. We would love to visit again!
Even if it might read boring, but we have to second what others wrote before: this ryad is a pure gem! Beautiful rooms, exceptionally friendly staff, great food, outrageous breakfasts at the roof terrace (even at the end of November), and last but not least: Jean Gabriel. We will never forget his warmhearted hospitality, great dinners with interesting company, and his very helpful advices regarding Essaouira and its vicinity. If we will every come back to Maroc, and chances are good, we will most definitely come back to Ryad Watier, promised!
Amazing staff. Hayat the assistant manager couldn't have been more helpful or enthusiastic about her job. Jean Gabriel the owner was also fantastic. You were made to feel part of the family not just a guest in this wonderful Riad.
The owner of this Riad is just fantastic and he wants to make your stay as comfortable as possible, even offering us a glass of wine upon arrival. The breakfast was fantastic (included eggs and yogurt...not just bread and jam)! The room was big and spacious. The location was superb for shopping and walking around the quaint town. We only needed a cab once and that was to get to the opposite side of town, but we walked back in a leisurely 45 minutes.
Having to leave at the end of our stay!
Excellent hosts, Jean and Hyatt so genuinely helpful with recommendations of visits and restaurants. Ryad very comfortable, and attention to detail never missed....fresh roses in room, beautifully scented oils, interesting art work. Don't hesitate to book!
Having to leave. . .
The staff were fantastic and very friendly. The location was perfect and our room was fantastic with a great shower! Some great touches like our own candles and oil burner in the room. We would have loved to stay longer
From the moment we walked in the door the service was fantastic. Nothing was too much trouble. The room was enormous, the art was really good and the room decorations fantastic. Thoroughly reccomend.
riad was very charming with beautiful little touches all around making it warm and inviting and very interesting. owner jean gabriel was very helpful and delightful man. a great place to stay in essouria.
Nothing I can remember
Great breakfast incl. among others home made orange marmelade, yoghurt with fresh fruit cuts and more well prepared treats of traditional Moroccan style on the roof terrace. Welcoming and helpful owner/staff providing good recommendations on restaurants and other supportive information. The room decorations and lay out - light and spacious with a mezzanine floor for the children to sleep, good bathroom facilities and AC. Arranged transfer to Marrakesh to share with other guests to split cost.
Nothing to dislike
Warm welcome and always helpful - outstanding breakfasts on the roof - very convenient location
We were overwhelmed by the warmth of the welcome we received from Jean Gabriel and his staff. Everything was superb from the location to the quality of service at the Riad. We were particularly touched by the genuine care and personal attention we received fromJean Gabriel and his staff - we felt like we were personal guests in his home - which of course we were - because he lives on site. Just a fantastic stay and will certainly return at some point. We would also have no hesitation in recommending this Riad to all our friends
