Problem with the lift, before 8am i needed to take the emmergency stairs to go out. No body explained that before 8am the lift wasn't working. One day a lady entered my room at 7h30 screeming that the lift isn't working. The room was located near the lift with a window giving on the corridor, so no possibility to open the window. No heating in the room, it was very cold. restaurant: The staff gives priority to customer not residing in the guesthouse. Staff unfriendly.
The hotel has a style, an atmoshere and a good restautant, we enjoyed it during our second stay
It was cold in mid January and the heating system's capaciy is far not enough, so we were cold as well The brakfast is really monotonous
Lovely room, perfect location
Did not have a proper window - only a window to an internal courtyard
I'm sure this hotel is great but didn't stay to try it. The restaurant looked great
Sadly arrived on carnival day and the city was closed off to transport so we were unable to get to it with luggage tried to cancel as very noisy but couldn't
The location is superb, with all the major attractions of this 450-year-old city within short walking distance. The building is an old, typical stone Maltese house; the restaurant is good, with reasonable prices, and the staff friendly and helpful. Both the room and the restaurant were always spotlessly clean. There is a lovely roof deck; we had access to it although we were there in January so it wasn't being served.
Heating, like airconditioning, is user-pay; this in an old building with massive--and uninsulated--stone walls, concrete ceiling and tiled floor. There were no carpets. The water heater in the tiny and well-equipped bathroom held only enough hot water for one shower. The biggest problem was ventilation--there wasn't any in our room or the adjoining bathroom, except for one window which gave onto the balcony corridor by which you reached our room. Leaving this open (as the cleaning staff did every day after their visit) meant there was no security at all. There was black mould on the wall beside (and probably behind) the wardrobe, on the bathroom ceiling above the shower and in the main room above the window. We were on the top floor and the room vibrated all night with the noise of fans or refrigerating equipment on the roof, probably for the restaurant. The restaurant was always cold because the doors were left open to allow staff easy access to the outdoor dining areas.
Central location Excellent vegetarian breakfast Quirky decor
Located next to St John's cathedral with bells chiming every quarter of an hour throughout the night. No reception area Credit card reader needed to be keyed on a high bar so no privacy
Very friendly staff, even at unannounced late check in. The room was splendid and so was breakfast.
The churchbell near to the location was keeping me up the first night. After getting used to it, I slept through it the night after.
The location is excellent. The personnel was nice besides the manager. The breakfast is decent.
there was so much noise in the room.. You could here everything from the hallway, everything from the neighbors, weird sounds from the bathroom (the toilette basin for e.g); the air conditioning didn't work several times or the electricity card didn't and every time the manager of the hotel had to be there to fix these things and he had a fairly arrogant attitude. there was an unpleasant smell in the room (due to mould, dampness). There was hot water only for half of the shower. No windows to the room, which was not clear from the website. It's a pretty cheap hotel shouldn't have many expectations, but all in all the experience was quite disappointing.
Cleanliness Views Politeness of Louise the cleaning lady
1)Surly, inefficient, inexperienced waitresses. 2) No Reception! 3) Bedrooms very hit and miss, i.e. upon arrival given a room No. 44 above the kitchen which VIBRATED ongoing quite horrifically from the industrial EXTRACTOR FAN. Despite being coerced by the Deputy Mngr to stay there for one night as "no rooms", when I threatened to find accommodation elsewhere, she plucked a magnificent room out of the sky and said we could sleep there for one night, which she then extended to 2 nights!! (Beautiful room No. 35). The third room No 21 (in 3 days of packing and unpacking) was OK but noise from the street was not good and the stairs on the mezzanine were dangerous - health and safety should be consulted about this! 4) Had to pay upfront on day 2 as "this was the custom in Malta". I asked the Tourist Information Office and they said it WAS NOT THE CUSTOM and gave me a form to lodge an official complaint to the Malta Tourism Offices. \\ If you are lucky to get a nice room you will be OK - but then you will still have to contend with the absence of a Reception as well as unhelpful and surly waiting staff.
Location and good bed
Distance of bathroom from bedroom and the bells ringing all through the night but not the hotel's fault for that
the lack of welcome on arriving
The guest house is located within the city of valletta, where shops, restaurants, tourist attractions are all within walking distance. It also has restaurant downstairs which closes at 11pm, so you won't have to worry abt having a little late dinner. The food served there is excellent and the staff was very kind! She even offered to pack us lunch becus we told her that we were leaving early morning the next day that we had to miss the free breakfast. Overall i had a pleasant stay.
The location & charm of the house
Check-in in the pizzeria between 2 orders Tiny 'superior' room with the door 50cm away from the bed Personnel more interested in the turnover of the pizzeria than the comfort of the guests Absolutely no service on January 1st: breakfast (ie 1 smal sandwich & 1 industrial chocolate croissant) provided in a paper box outside the room, no cleaning, no taxi service...but normal price
The decoration of the inside of the building was incredible, old bikes and antiques etc, the staff where under pressure in the restaurant, due to being New Years eve, but they where still very helpful if I needed information, the location could not be faulted.
Stayed in top room 42, I did not realise, there would be no outside window, there was a window but it was just shutters, looking out into inside of property, so room was very dark without using artificial light, the sandstone walls made it very cold feel, it made it worse as the weather conditions, where very cold, which where well below Maltas average temps, it made it feel a bit like a prison sell. When the bells from St.Johns started, at first it was a novelty, but eventually it did get to you, and woke me up very early New Years day.
Right in centre, above great restaurant. Friendly staff, nice room.
No window in room, not a huge problem but means waking up in the dark. Thin walls, but again, not really a problem.
Good wifi, very nice characterful decor, clean room, good location
Window is not onto a "courtyard" but the central stairway. There is no soundproofing (you can hear everything) and no natural light or view. They should make this clear in the room description. There is no reception, so if you arrive when the restaurant is closed you can't check in
situated right beside st. john cathedral great view on the cathedral, esp. from the roof house from the 16/17th century good restaurant on the ground floor
first night was a bit hard since the bells of the cathedral worked all night long, every 15 min. but in the second night we were already used to it. there is a lift in the building but it doesn't always work which can be tricky no heating, however winters are pretty warm in malta due to the 2 floor layout of the apartment the way to the toilet was pretty long at night
Good location - can walk to everything, interesting vintage decor, quiet room, quaint guest lounge area on 3rd floor, with books & info about Malta.
No proper reception area - had to go through the restaurant on the ground floor. Restaurant staff not very friendly or helpful (except the waitress who served breakfast). The room had no window/s to the outside - very dark. Tiny bathroom & shower. Boring breakfast - no cooked breakfast, only "continental" - toast with processed ham & cheese slices, stale processed muffin & croissant, no fruit or juice.
We were very excited about our stay in Luciano's. When we arrived everything seemed perfect - the location was great, we booked the best room, we had a balcony, the room was spacious, all seemed to be perfect. The property has got it's own restaurant with a lot of locals eating in there, so that was a good sign as well!
However very quickly we have realised that it's far from being ideal. Firstly - let me make it clear, the thing that was mentioned in other reviews - the lack of reception is an odd thing. The restaurant was so busy, that we felt a bit lost, likely no one was interested in us. Luckily, when we got their attention, the staff was nice and helpful and we had an early check in as our room was ready straight away. All could be great, but be aware that the lack of reception may cause serious problems! We have been staying only 1 night as we came for weekend break and our wedding anniversary. We were tired after a ling trip and after a nice dinner on Saturday, we wanted to get some nice sleep over night! That was impossible! It weren't the bells mentioned in other reviews - you can stand them. Can you imagine that at 5 am!!! in the morning, there were some constructions works going on in the street just below our window!? It was so loud that we completely did not sleep from 5 until 8 am when they stopped working! Because they have no reception, I tried to call them straight away. We would move to another room, any room, as we just wanted to sleep! Nobody picked up.In the morning I went downstairs to speak to their manager. I did accepted that it was not them doing works outside, but I told them that someone should have picked up the phone! What if there was a fire in the room? I asked for a small discount / refund due to this inconvenience. The only thing I heard was that it was not their fault. Their manager wasn't interested in the fact that we did not get any sleep and our anniversary was a bit ruined. Having the above in mind, and despite the fact it was nicely located, I will not stay in there again. The thing I really do not like is the lack of the right customer service.
Location is really great.
Staff should be more friendly and smiling in their approach. Windows need some sound proofing. Room was rather cold in evenings and nights.
Described as a room looking onto a courtyard, it actually opened onto an upstairs hallway, so you could not leave the shutters or window open as the other guests walked past it. Therefore the room had no natural light at all. We asked to be moved.
This hotel is right at the beating heart of Valletta being a few strides from the amazing St. John's cathedral. Try to get up earlyish for the short mass at 8.30 to get a free look at the breathtaking (honestly) interior. The hotel's rooms manage to be large and cosy and you feel like you're hidden away in an ancient maze above a lively restaurant.
I suppose the breakfast could have been better but they did allow three coffees so I can't complain too much.
Family-run, highly recommended, and perfect location. Visually, the most interesting place we've ever stayed!! Decor is interesting, quirky, and full of surprises, found myself photographing every wall and surface! Our room even had a spiral staircase leading to a mezzanine. Staff were v. friendly, helpful. Bathroom was v. spacious and clean, with wonderful shower, hot and strong. Their buzzy restaurant is excellent, and obviously popular with locals through the day. Generous portions of amazingly presented food. Would def. stay again, no question.
Can't really think of anything to dislike!
Friendly staff in the restaurant. Very central location. Beautiful decoration.
Unprofessional check in. There is no reception or anything, you just walk around with suitcases until the owner of the restaurant sees you and call you into the restaurant where you check in standing in front of the kitchen. The room was clean but not deep cleaned. The bed was super squirky and because the place is central and the windows old it is impossible to have a relaxing sleep during the night. I really felt that it was overpriced -paid 75 euro- we were only in Valletta 1 night due to connecting flights but it was disappointing.
Location good with view over Cathedral and square. In a pedestrian area, so no motor traffic.
Our first room they said had a view of the courtyard which was only the landing. The only window was on to the landing. However after 2 nights got a room overlooking the square which was excellent. Food was poor.
