# nice front beach # good snorkeling spot # nice staff # food menu is OK (except burger)
# bedding not comfy, matress being of very basic quality i.e. too stiff # no fresh fruit juices for breakfast # breakfast is served too late i.e. starting @ 08:00 AM and if you arrive sooner, they do not let you in and you have to wait outside the lounge # have been sick eating the hamburger. Not the right place to eat meat actually... # not possible to pay w/ credit card
For us there was nothing that we did not like. We loved the Hotel, great staff, great Owners, great food, great location, and the beach is beyond perfect! We asked to have dinner served on the terrace of the room and they didn't even hesitate to accommodate our request. Even the distance from the town made it all that much better. We can't wait to go back.
That we only stayed one night...
Beautiful quiet location on a private beach. Great service, excellent helpful staff. Visited many places in Quintana Roo area and this was the best. Rooms were nice and comfortable with a walkout to the beach. Great value. Andreas and Monica are terrific hosts.
The location was beautiful And we would have loved to stay longer. The rooms are prices reasonably, but the food was more expensive than expected. And they don't take credit cards which is a bummer If it's hard to get cash in the area.
beautiful location and hotel
the breakfast was a disappointment
Lovely quiet place at the beach
One day the hotel was crowded by people coming from a cruise ship - day tour for them but they occupied all spaces at the private beach of the hotel
The location was remote and isolated, which is what we wanted. The best part is definitely the setting.
The owner also sold "day access" to his hotel to the nearby cruise ships when they docked at Mahahual. They took over the best beach lay out spots, traveled in large groups so took over the dining area, and have a different vibe than the hotel guests. Also, the food was just good, not great.
Although Mahahual is a sleepy little town, with fairly average facilities; Almaplena located some 20kms further south, is a slice of paradise. Monica and Andreas are lovely hosts, friendly without being invasive, and their resort has a true family feel. The rooms are stunning, with great views of a beautiful stretch of beach, there is a reef within easy snorkelling distance, and the hotel is simply beautiful. It is a very quiet part of the country - if you want to get away from it all, do some diving on chi churro banks, snorkel or just relax, then this place I'd ideal.
Do be warned - it is a true Eco hotel, which we loved but may not be for everyone.. One small gripe would be that a lot of the food was good but not great. However it is very reasonably priced and we were more than happy to have most meals there.
The most beautiful and clean room we had in latinamerica. Perfect place to lay in a lovely breeze in a hammock and watch the pelicans flying by listening tothe waves. Exceptional nice accomodation, beautiful beach, very friendly and helpful owners, one of them drove us to the crossing where public transport is supposed to pass by and waited with us an hour for the bus to come. Very good value for money. 9 points in every category. Thank you very much
First and foremost the almaplena beach resort is a perfect pick. Only small downside is that water is sold in 500ml bottels in the restaurant and it is the option to buy water within the range of many kilometers. Given that the hotel is called 'eco' resort a refill option or even just 2l bottels would be a more ecologic and fair solution. Also breakfast comes in classic small one portion marmelade and butter servings which produces more plastic waste than necessary. The beach around the resort is drowning in plastic waste, the resort cant do anything about it, it comes with the sea, the beach at the resort is cleaned every morning.
The beautiful private beach in remote location. The nice food of the little restaurant (perhaps best place for dîner in mahahual). Nice bed, fan, terrasse, discrete service on the beach, hammoc.
The shower would truly need a boost. No recreational items (no kayak, boat, couple of books/magazine only, no ball, beach tennis....or whatever). The only 2 available masks to go snorkling where "square" which doesn't on normal human round face (?!?). The breakfast could be served with a bit more generosity. We only understood at the end of the stay that eggs, bread and pancakes where included.
