The Hotel Colonial was surprisingly nice hotel near the border. It is located in the Central District near lots of little street vendor and plenty of inexpensive eateries. The rooms were comfortable and well-kept. The air condition kept the room nice and cool. There is a nice huge courtyard to enjoy the cool Matamoros evenings. Despite the current safety concerns in the city, I felt fairly safe staying within the shadows of the hotel. The hotel does not have an elevator. This really is not a serious problem since it has only 3 floors anyway. The hotel does offer free wi-fi, however, we were on the 3rd floor just doors down from the access point. In order to get a strong signal, you needed to be outside the room, practically next to the access point.
