Not the hotel's fault but since January most of the Caribbean side beaches have been infested by red algae. Hip hotel did its best to clean it every morning, but it is impossible to keep up. Still can swim in the sea, but no clear waters and white sand beaches are covered with mounds of red algae. Hopefully this will be gone soon. Tulum has the advantage of being next to the ecological reserve that is not affected by this.
If you are looking for a nice little place to relax and enjoy the Caribbean this is your place. Hip hotel is part of the Tulum mini-Empire of ana y jose which insures a basic standard of quality: clean beds, breakfast included, hammock outside of every room, showers with sweet water (not salt water), friendly staff.
This isn't a resort, though. After all this is Tulum, which tries to be the anti-Cancun. Relaxing is the main purpose of this place.
