Retiro Maya Tulum    

The bungalows on the beach are without a doubt charming and the location is amazing. Yoga at the facility is expensive but a great touch. The "eco-tourism" vibe; outdoor shower, lack of electricity for most of the day makes for a relaxing, off the grid siesta from the real world. Enchanting destination.

Lot's of mosquitoes. Disorganized staff -- had to be questioned multiple times whether or not I'd paid because they hadn't kept their books up. Could have used more candles since there were not lights for a good part of the night and none in the day.

I loved the view and the simplicity. The breakfast was simple, but good. The bed was firm and comfortable. The mosquito nets, while a necessity, also lended an air of romance, along with the candles when the power was out. I loved the stars by night and the sunshine alarm clock!

We were each given one 16 oz bottle of water, for two days, no refills, no additional waters, and buying a liter from the restaurant was $40MXN, as opposed to <$20MXN everywhere else. Being low on cash, we were extremely dehydrated by the end of our stay. And I know it was just because everyone spoke Spanish everywhere else, but we found it disconcerting that no one spoke Spanish to or with us here. It was almost as if the staff was reticent to be seen speaking Spanish to the guests, as if it were against the rules. Compared to the other places we stayed, it was very isolating.

Little more space, better products inside, cheapper food, less bugs inside the room

Too expensive for the payment

The Restaurant setting is lovely. The stretch of beach right there is pristine and gorgeous.

Fan did not work in our room. We arrived late and the problem could not remedied unless we took another room in the the back (less value). The light was dim and blue because of the lampshade, very cold and erie color for the No furniture to speak of in the room. Very disappointed to pay $110 cash for this!

me and my boyfriend were staying at retiro maya in marts 2013 and we really enjoyed it. its very simple and very ecofriendly with no electricity after 22.30 and wooden cabins. its located in the very quiet end of tulum wich makes it a perfect place for just relaxing and deconnecting with the outside world. we really love it, we stayed 10 days..breakfast gets a little boring ind the end but still is good!, freshpresses orangejuice, bread and fruit, coffee and tea. the woman who was there for us at hour stay Tania Favela is sooo sweet! she just served us so well and helped us with everything. she was always around making sure everybody got the best of their stay:). Tulum is amazing if you like the more quit not so turisted part of yucatan and especially in retiro maya you will get this feeling of just being totally set free in the nature surroundings of wood sand and the caribbean ocean. we fell asleep to the sound of the ocean and we woke up to the sound of the ocean. there arent really so many activities and things to do at the hotel but relaxing but they help you with tours and you can rent a bike just dont the street and go in to the little street of tulum with a little more action. you can also just walk it takes about 10-15 min, we enjoyed that walk many times. also just besides retiro maya is the co tulum hotel with a nice bar and pizzaria call juanita daviola were we went alot in the eving to just kickback have a drink and relax before sleeping. they also close at 22.30:). you should choose retiro maya if you enjoy natural surroundings and simplicity and do care so much about materialism. its really heaven! love sally and niko from denmark

we didnt like the chichen itza tour we got from the hotel, with a company called easy tour! dont go with them, seriously take the bus yourself to chichen itza a rent your own guide when you are out they, you only get 1 hour with easy tours you will be with an enourmous group and the rush you through the whole thing. no good. but thats not retiro mayas fault i dont now if anyone have comlained about the tour but we didnt liek it. too touristed. and then the food could be more interesting but still good and simple:)

The location is amazing

We prepaid 6 nights for a Cabana for 2 people with an ocean view and when we got there the Venezuelan lady at the front desk put us in the cabana for 4 people with a garden view, not the ocean view like we had booked. When we complained she lied to us and told us that the garden view was an ocean view. After 2 nights of our 6 night stay she finally moved us to the cabana we had booked with the ocean view. These people are dishonest and will swindle you.

Quiet, near by beach, staff tries to be friendly

Misunderstanding at booking: we had booked cottage by the beach, not possible on arrival, our cabana was near the reception. On Sunday there were signs at the restaurant and at the beach: "Restaurant open until 3 pm". At 2 pm there was a choice of melon and watermelon. Highly overpriced at 150 dollars pr night for very simple cabana, no secure lock at the cabana, wifi unreliable, corchroach in the outdoor bathroom, no electricity from 10 at night

The location is unbeatable. The staff among the best I have ever encountered in my many years of travel. The eco-friendly environment was sublime for people who enjoy simplicity and unblemished natural beauty. Highly recommended.

Improvements could be made in the kitchen offerings, but the waitstaff and chef were delightful.

The restaurant staff were incredibly friendly and the location on the beach was perfect.

We ate in the newly built restaurant on one of the evenings and had food and cocktails. We thought we had clarified at the beginning of the meal that the 2 4 1 offer was on food and cocktails. However, when we received the bill we got a bit of a fright as it was only the food (not the cocktails) and the whole meal ended up being the most expensive,and unfortunatelynot the best meal, we had in the whole of Mexico. The sheets could be changed at least once during the stay. We couldn't rent bikes from returo as they didn't have a lock or big enough basket and we didn't want to risk going to the ruins and having them stolen.

It was on the beach, the fellow guests were friendly, the price was okay.

What can I say about my stay at the Retiro Maya Tulum! It was a catalogue of poor service and mistreatment. I can't understand how the management expect to run a successful business by treating paying guests with such contempt and disregard! The whole experience was a catalogue of errors and shortfall in expectations for me. I did, however, refuse to let this ruin my stay in Tulum and learnt to take each event as a character building event... Some highlights: - despite advertising yoga and massage there was none available. I asked several times for info and times etc. but was repeatedly ignored. Eventually I was told there was none :-( - Retiro Maya Tulum expect the customer to pay the 5% PayPal commission on top of the advertised room rate. This is quite unfair considering they do not accept credit cards and payment must be made before arrival to secure a room reservation.. Perhaps they don't feel a business should have to handle their operating costs? - breakfast was terrible. Continental breakfast apparently consists of stale day old baguette, meagre portion of fruit and terrible coffee. This was also strictly rationed so no chance of extra bread or fruit even when asked unless you paid for it. In fact you are made to feel quite guilty for having appetite.. Considering breakfast is 8am at best and most guests are up at sunrise then there is a lot of hungry guests. Many took a morning stroll or jog as well. - after staying 3 nights I threw my used and dirty towel in the corner of the bathroom as instructed by the sign next to the single towel. However when I returned to my room I discovered it had been hung back up to dry!! I complained to Frederico, the hotel manager, who responded by questioning me on how many days I had stayed already!! apparently towels are changed once a week by the maids...For the record, i used the towel at least 6 times which I told him was reasonable but if I wanted a fresh towel everyday I should expect one.

It is just the most beautiful place in Tulum to stay. You are able to take Yoga classes, to swim and enjoy the beauty of nature. Namasté

The location was amazing. Listening and looking at the ocean was amazing.

The staff did not know what was going on. I had to prove that I had paid them via paypal. They should have had that information, I should not have to prove with an email etc if I had paid for my stay. I was also confronted in the morning as I was getting the continental breakfast that I paid for if I indeed paid for it and if it was included in my price. That should be taken care of. The lights going out at 11pm all over the hotel is very uncomfortable as a woman traveling by herself. I did not feel safe, and it was difficult just getting around. I also did not like that you had to plug your valuables (computer, phone, etc) in the main office which is a completely open office and does not always have someone watching the valuables. My bed sheets and pillows were stained with what looked almost like blood stains from bug bites. The bed was VERY uncomfortable.

It was generally understaffed, resulting in slow service. They only had electricity in the rooms between 19h30 and 23h00, which I found very unpractical with two small children.

Nice Eco friendly hut right on the beach was perfect. I could hear the ocean from my bed and was very soothing.

I warmly recommend you to stay at this wonderful place. Cute Cabañas with the ocean outside your door. You fall a sleep hearing the waves of the caribbean ocean. Helpful staff, a restaurant with excellent food and you are surronded by beautiful nature. I found my paradise!

The location and the accomodations

Too expensive

It was on a beautiful beach, quiet for the most part, no children screaming, we slept with our door open and felt safe the whole week. The staff was friendly and unintrusive. Our room and bathroom were large compared to other similarily priced cabanas we have stayed in in Tulum. The breakfast was fresh and consistent and the location was perfect for us.

We liked everything about the hotel however they made us pay the full amount of the stay immediately after we booked in order to hold the reservation. The do not take credit cards and asked that we wire transfer the money to the hotel owner which felt unsafe to me in an international transaction. We used PayPal which ended up being easy and successful.

The place is nice . We like location .The resturant is unpleasnt suprise . The dinner was worst food I ever taste in my entire life.The hotel is good but not to eat in hotel.

My only complaints are that my shower was not fixed when I couldn't get hot water. They didn't even try to fix it for me. I had to take cold showers for five days. Also, the restaurant there is really poor. The food is terrible. I was really disappointed in it.

we stayed in a beachfront cabana. It has a great location nice place, nice beach and view, quite, relaxing, romantic. Continental breakfast is enoughf. we would go back, no problem!!

the beach was not clean everyday, but its a natural waist from the reefs, the sheets were not tottally clean ( had some staines), no safe in cabana, only in reception.

La playa se encuentra a pocos pasos de las cabañas, es muy tranquilo para ir a relajarse y disfrutar de la playa y el mar, esta cerca de varios lugares para conocer mas de Tulum.

La limpieza de las playas, el gusto decorativo,la ubicacion del hotel, la accesibiidad del chec in,

La zona de playa en la que se encuentra es excelente ademas de estar practicamente en la playa ya que al salir de la cabaña practicamente ya estas pisando la arena.

El concepto ecologico es muy bueno pero el cortar la luz representa cierta incomodidad si llegas despues de las 10pm o te levantas en la noche. El baño no esta completamente cerrada y desde fuera de la cabaña se puede ver la regadera y el excusado si se asoman otros huespedes, lo que puede incomodar. Tambien se escucha un poco la musica de los bares cercanos pero es para todos los alojamientos de la zona.
