Placed directly on the beach, along Playa del Carmen's famous Fifth Avenue, next to Mamita's Beach Club, this hotel offers comfortable guestrooms and an on-site restaurant.
Score from 100 reviews Very good
There are plenty of Playa del Carmen hotels but few offer you a home away from home option right on the Caribbean beach and steps from world class shopping.
Score from 188 reviews Very good

beachfront location, styling, excellent breakfast buffet, atmosphere... all these are exactly what you are looking for in a beach vacation. There was some beach erosion, but that is seasonal, and there was a music festival in town that affects the entire town, not just this resort, so I won't hold that against them. All in all, I would stay here again, but that would only be in hopes that some of my negatives were just because they appeared to be relatively new out of a recent renovation.
Service was just fair. Some guys, like our pool guy "Flaco" was personable, helpful, and fun; but at other times it was like the wait staff were deaf. Ask for coffee or a refill and they never come back. The worst part of the trip was the free WIFI. Come on, folks, it's 2015. And saying "it's Mexico" doesn't cut it. I have a beach vacation rental condo in Playa and my internet is faster and more reliable that at this resort. Plus, it is only available in the hotel lobby, not a the pools or the restaurants, and certainly not in the rooms. Thus, the lobby was always crowded with people and their connected devices. When you could connect, the service was so slow that my emails wouldn't even populate into my inbox. When I needed something, I just walked a block inland to Piola restaurant, which has fast and free wifi, and a darn good basil martini, too. Also, our hot water went away one night. They had been pounding all day in the next room, so I presumed it was something to do with that. I mentioned to front desk, but it was only luke warm the next morning, and despite mentioning it again, we never got truly hot water for our last 2 nights. Staff non-responsive and non-communicative was annoying... almost as annoying as the knocks on the doors starting as early as 8:30am -- really? it's not a business hotel, folks, people are on vacation, and they are not ready for housekeeping that early. Wow, maybe after thinking it over again, it really wasn't worth the money.
We are tough customers and this hotel totally won us over!!! If you are looking for a luxury boutique hotel experience in an amazingly beautiful location... book this hotel now!!! Everything about this hotel says, "Relax and enjoy" and I do mean everything. No TV or phones in the room and very limited wifi so don't come to work and play here. Let it all go and enjoy absolutely delicious food and ocean views to die for!!! Can't say enough good things about this place. We'll be back FOR SURE!!!
The hotel has just been remodeled and the sheets were new and not soft yet. Hopefully after some washing they'll soften up. The lack of wifi was an issue. The only location to get any service was in the lobby and that was problematic.
The location is amazing. Mahekal is right on the beach and just a few short blocks to the shops on 5th avenue. Our bungalow was oceanfront with the most beautiful view of the pool and ocean. Our bed was super comfortable and our room was cleaned thoroughly every day. Every meal that we had at Mahekal was delicious and we found the drinks to be very fairly priced!
The free wifi only works in the lobby and I had a poor signal every time I tried to use it.
No shower on the beach For a family a small, noisy, dirty room. Late check out is not possible
Location Staff Beach Value for money
Facilities could be enhanced such as the gym Noise levels birds quite loud Cleanliness could be improved and some rooms need some restoration we changed room as the first was really smelly.
Graet location. Good food. . Very clean. Peaceful. Place. We loved it !!
We had to leave.. .
Beautiful, right on the beach. Our room was clean and spacious. The tile work in the bathroom was pretty cool. The staff were nice and helpful. Breakfast was great.
Quiet, peaceful, the food was excellent. The bungalows were amazing the smell of thatched roof. One of the most beautiful places I have been to. The showers were beautiful. Beds were comphy. Staff were friendly helpful. The spa full body scrub is a must. Loved everything about mahekal beach resort. We will b back. Thanks for the memories
The resort was remodeling and workers were everywhere. The resort as very accommodating and moved our room.
We spent a week in this stilish hotel with our family. The children loved both the sea and the two swimming pools. The hotel is very nice and the staff was very helpfull also to organise the birthday of our daughter. A perfect hotel for family vacation!
The hotel is not cheap but include half pension.
The accommodations were very clean and comfortable. The beach was beautiful and so accessible. A very easy place to stay.
A bit too disney beach resort for a single young lady, but on the other hand - one definitely gets what's promised with this sort of place. Maybe better for families and/or couples. Also, it seems that when I purchased through booking.com, I was signed up for a package that included breakfast and dinner, but was not aware that that was being factored into the cost. Sort of an irritating surprise. I am not sure if that was an additional cost or an automatic thing - but if not necessary, one should try to ask that that expense not be included. Also, Mahekal charged the total amount to my card at the time of booking, rather than what booking.com indicates - that the amount will be withdrawn at the time of check-out. Another irritating surprise. Other than the booking.com snafus though - I was quite content with the resort.
location, individual huts, no TV,
Incomplete info at check in, no room phones to call for luggage pickup, older pools (which are to be renovated)
Friendly staff, superb cleaning staff (everyday we received new towels formed in different shapes like heart, temple,...)
Very poor WIFI-connection (if you can consider this as being a minus)
Great staff, food, location and mix of people. Felt very comfortable.
Sidewalks are too narrow throughout the whole project at 2.5 Feet. My wife fell when she had to step aside to allow another guest to pass. Sidewalk had a 6 inch drop off. She split her knee cap and is in a 6 week recovery. Problem can be easily addressed by adding 6-10 inches to each side and done in a way that won't detract from the overall beauty of the resort. If this were in the U.S. they would have had many lawsuits by now. The owners are U.S. and we are considering our options.
close walk to beach, close walk to 5th ave shops and restaurants Some of waitstaff were very kind and friendly
Wrong room upon arrival, seems commonplace.Somewhat rude and indifferent staff. Our bathroom had rusty old fixtures, toilet smelled old and dirty, mattress and pillows were old and musty.Filthy common area bathrooms too. Never enough staff at front desk, never a concierge the whole time we were there. Not very helpful.Dinner Buffet was awful,we only went once and then didn't bother to go back.
Beautiful beach, comfortable rooms great location to relax!
Got a pedicure done in the spa, very expensive and worst pedi I've ever had!
Fantastic location - right on the beach and easily walkable to Quinta Avenida, the main restaurant/shopping street. But it still has a private and secluded feel when you're on the property. And the on-site restaurants are great too, if you don't feel like leaving (and you might not!).
I stared at this box for a few minutes, and the only thing I can think of is that the beach can be a little busy. But the hotel has its own chairs and palapas, and we never had a problem finding a spot.
Great staff.. always friendly and accommodating! Our Palapa was directly on the beach…but we still had privacy and lots of space for the three of us.
some construction noise, while I was having a massage in the outdoor spa tent.
Location at beach was good
Not a 4 star hotel, more a 3 star. Staff was tired. Very old hotel in urgent need of renovation. Bad rooms, no mirror, hairdryer, fridge, etc etc. The food was not tasty at all!
We actually ended up leaving. The sulfer aroma on the beach which was a result of some sort of environmental phenomema, was awful. The rooms were comfortable, but tired. Members of the staff were accommodating in allowing us to leave, but for a price. Not the highlight of our trip.
They put us in another hotel Palapas without any choice. BAD service in the hotel, rude people, not information, unorganized, last day HUGO ADRIAN in the reception whats to charge about 200 USD extra for unknown reason!!
Most of the staff is nice. Good breakfast
Rooms are small and nice some reform. There is A LOT of noise coming from nearby beach clubs. A not very pleasant smell is sometimes present.
There were very loud construction works going on. It smelled very bad from the sea. I guess it was because it rained very heavily for some days and the sewage system may not be very good.
-disgusting smell everywhere -outdated rooms -no internet, phone, tv in the rooms
Everything was perfect. On the beach and near the pools there were always some privacy.Food was very tasty and great. I totally would recommend this hotel
the place close to the city and with a wonderfull beach the food the amability of the staff the security
the room are too old, specially bathroom and dressing the bar which really not sympatic but we can go in 2 min in the center so ... the system of reservation of transat on the beach which are so complicate
