The sense of history and the restoration has kept the traditions alive. The luxury of the space in the suite and feeling of home and comfort. The staff were extremely polite to me and always greeted me but I did not appreciate how they mostly ignored my wife who is Malaysian born. I find this spoilt our enjoyment of the stay. I find it disappointing that the locals discriminate against their own racial origins. Perhaps it is taking the feeling of Colonial nostalgia too far! You should train your staff to show the same courtesy to all guests not just the "Mat Salleh".

We enjoy the romance of the hotels history and architecture. It has a style and old world sophisticarion that we enjoy. We have been wanting to stay there since 1973 when we first travelled through Penang as backpackers.

Chose the hotel based on its location....... But what it turned out was something a lot more than we bargained for ! a Colonial hotel that has retained its old worldly charm through & through ! The rooms, the staff, the facilities to. The ambiance..... Par excellence ! a property to be recommended !

Everything, but mainly the staff. They were, without exception, friendly, helpful and pleasant,at all times.I also liked the amount of space and sheer beauty of our suite, which presented us with magnificent sea views. There was nothing to dislike,or complain about. It is the best hotel i have ever stayed at !.

We were delighted to be able to stay in an extraordinarily spacious and stylish suite that you can scarcely find nowadays. We booked an delux suite and were given a sea-view room on the third floor facing the calm and wide Malacca Strait. Excellent pool side experience and excellent quality and variety of buffet breakfast were added credits. Room price includes all the above and no extra costs are needed to get an extraordinarily delgihtful experience at this 6 star hotel.

The whole stay was truly amazing. We were treated like honoured guests - perhaps even more so because it was our honeymoon. As we were honeymooning we were upgraded to an even better suite, which was huge with wonderful sea views. The food was excellent both at breakfast and in the restaurant. However the thing that impressed the most was the calibre of the staff and the service we received. The entire staff were friendly and helpful and nothing was too much trouble. We are certain that this hotel will be a regular stop when we travel to this part of the world.

The room was large and well presented. The view from the room was spectacular. Overall, the hotel was great; the staff were very helpful. The bed was an older style bed, which was hard and uncomfortable, not firm and comfortable. It gave us back aches.

We both loved the style and the era of the place, the bar, the poolside and the room itself. The gift shop was helpful and so were the cleaning staff, reception etc. The hotel was chosen as we both enjoy discovering luxury hotels and the hotel stands as a standard on par with Sukhotai, Bangkok., Penninsula, Hong Kong and Raffles , Singapore. The new wing with the Sarkies Corner was fantastic and the waitstaff were friendly and helpful The hotel staff lacked experience especially at the old Sarkies Corner where breakfast is served. They have no concept of customer service, they didnt check which room we were from nor seat us. Tea was offered with one teabag in the pot when for three days we had requested for two teabags. The maitre'd loved himself so much that most of the time, he ignored the customers. The choice available for breakfast was not of a high end selection, poor in fact, watery curries and dismal selection in western option. The staff overall had not much knowledge of where to go, what to see in Penang.... unlike most other hotels we have stayed at. The one word: no passion.

Great sea view from the balcony. Friendly staff. Great breakfast buffet - try the banana pancakes! The hotel location is great to explore Georgetown. If you're more into spending time at the beach, you should chose a different location. However, the hotel pool is very nice with good service.

Real Colonial style, clean and well presented Main service staff (not including 1885) require more training as breakfast was 'challanging' to get even a pot of tea and the bar seemed to want to serve cold food all the time.

A short trip back to colonial days. The staff everywhere were excellent and the hotel is certainly a classic hotel. Food very nice The bathroom in our suite was remarcable The atmosphere gave you value for money. Our suite was nice but could do with some new paint. The tv set was very old and needs to be replaced.

The luxury of the hotel is lovely - it's like a step back in time. The staff bend over backwards to help you. Despite this you do not feel like you are paying for such a good hotel - we spent more in an overnight stay at kl airport than 3 nights here! The exercise room is very small and lacking in equipment and air - conditioning - I would expect a lot better from such a luxury hotel.

Colonial past. Great location for seeing the varied sights of Georgetown but close enough to get back to the hotel to relax and chill out. Fantastic variety of food close by and very cheap. The hotel staff make you feel special and welcomed. Piped music in the corridors outside the suites- it continues until late in the night.
