I have been there many times before, and like it. They recently allowed free internet for all rooms which is a significant improvement. I had to make special use of the concierge service this trip, and found it excellent. Staff are friendly and helpful, and efficient. The atmosphere is relaxed and very comfortable. The ambience is elegant. The location is idea; very convenient tram and bus connections adjacent to the hotel, as well as extensive shopping and restaurant provision. Amenities such as the half price concert and theatre office is also very close. Easy walking distance to major museums and galleries.

Standard room on the "enresol" floor feels like in undergoing floor without sun in the window. Building is good outside but inside is not cosy at all. Never take this hotel again.

The location was good for us and the bed was very comfy We stayed for 2 nights over new year and this was the second time we had stayed here due to location! I don't think the hotel is cheap considering breakfast was not included & when I went down to ask for a cup of coffee on new years day I was looked at like dirt & told breakfast in the hotel was for guests only so I was very disappointed to be judged like that. Also no cleaners came to our room for our stay so I had to go find clean towels myself & when I went to tell reception that evening they said we must of had the do not disturb sign on but me & my partner did not use this and though the reception staff were quite rude and really just not bothered! I would not stay here again as would rather give my money to a hotel that appreciates it with good service when I return this year

The hotel was clean, with excellent location Water pressure in the showers were very week. When complained, they said this is water saving program. However, I do not think that this is true, as it was week to the extend that you had to lien on the wall to get water over your head.

The hotel was in an active part of Amsterdam, close to the Rijksmuseum, the VanGogh Museum, and Vondel Park. The Cafe Americain was excellent, and many fine restaurants were close by.

Is a very nice, old building! The location is great! A couple of minutes walking to the museums and center of Amsterdam and nice bars and resto for locals. The rooms are quite spacious and big!, The bedrooms are quite nice and clean. The pressure in the shower was not so good. And the older smell just in the hallways

We had particularly chosen the American Hotel because of the interesting design (a mixture of gothic, art nouveau and art deco). The public rooms inside were also very stylish although the bedrooms we stayed in had more of a corporate feel. It is in a brilliant location. Staff were very helpful and considerate throughout. We had requested a canal-side room but as none were available when we arrived, they moved us into another room the following day. It was all done with the minimum of fuss and made us feel well looked after.

We are just back from spending 3 nights at the above hotel. The booking confirmation stated that we could check in from 3pm onwards ,however we actually arrived just after 10 am and they were able to give us a room on arrival. It looked onto the canal and had a small balcony .The staff at reception were extremely helpful and informative. In fact all staff were very pleasant. The bar is a nice place to sit and people watch .If the weather is good then it is lovely to sit outside.Location of this hotel is excellent and we thought it was good value for money.I originally was going to book the park hotel but glad I picked this one as it was more traditonal.( the park is also in good location if you like modern)

Location Room was dark and small ... like a dungeon a 2-minute phone call: €12.00 ridiculous After check-out time, I requested to use a desk phone for a quick phone call to alert my ride. Staff refused to let me use the phone. Three staff members approached me as a group to emphasize that phone use was not an allowable expense (I offered to pay). Was sent to a hole-in-the-wall somewhere on the Overtoom (hard to find) to make a 50 cent phone call! When I came back, I had a message with a request to call back. Once again, staff loudly and assertively insisted that I could not use the phone, even though they indicated that the caller had made a request for me to call back. The situation was ludicrous and unacceptable. Will not stay at the Amsterdam American ever again and will discourage others from using it, unless I get compensation from the hotel management for the rude and inhospitable treatment by staff.

Staff are very friendly and helpful. The location is good and is right next to tram stations. Even within walking distance you can get loads of shops, bars and restaurants. There are also some nice museums nearby. My room is facing the tram stations and is noisy when the first tram arrives in the morning. If you are not used to noise, it's better to request for rooms facing the river.

The staff were helpful, polite and pleasant. Breakfast was lovely , as was the midmorning coffee and cakes. We loved the design, art work and photography around the hotel. The hotels' situation with regard to the places of Art and Design in the city, was superb, as was the nearness of public transport - which came in very handy. We would certainly use this hotel again. We felt the restaurant was possibly short staffed for the evening meal as service was slow. We booked our room on a reduced rate and therefore we assume this was why we had a small room with a view of a wall. This was ok for a short stay but would be oppressive for longer.

The old building is great. Stuffy chic, an amsterdam classic. My room was freezing, the window obscured by an anti-pigeon net. TV was tiny, bedlights a cold white light.

a great hotel when there are deals on as its quite expensive for most people nowdays. great comfort staff really happy and friendly. would stay again soon if there was a deal on price.local to everywhere trams and very clean. i gave my credit details to book the hotel, but when we arrived the afternoon, i expected to be asked if i wanted to pay with the euros cash as i had got the best rate i could, but wasnt offered just told it had been paid by my card i booked with ? I always get the currency been used in the country to pay my bill ive never been told no already paid by your card it would of been nice to of had the choice. 1 more thing i know cleaners come in most days i put a do not disturb sign on my door and even though we werent disturbed a letter saying hotel policy they need to check rooms every 2 days. fine and on the next day we were out and i took sign off but getting the letter again after 2 days what a waste of a tree.!
