Area information

Just outside Hotel Stadskanaal you will find ample choice of pleasant shops and small restaurants and the big Stadskanaal market, that's on every Saturday, starts 50 metres from the hotel and includes various specialities from Drente and Groningen. Next to Hotel Stadskanaal the theatre Geert Teis is situated and the cinema is only about a 100 metres further.

You can park your own bicycle in the guarded and covered bicycle shelter for free.

Hotel Stadskanaal is situated against the sand ridge of the Hondsrug and at cycling distance from places such as the Bourtange Settlement, Streekhistorisch Centrum (the regional historical centre), the historical railway S.T.A.R. (Stadskanaal-Ter Apel-Rijksgrens), the recreation area Pagedal, Borger and the peat district. There are cycling routes available for free and picnic baskets and good bicycles with gears for rent.

Within a half hours' drive you will be able to reach the zoo Dierenpark Emmen with its well-known butterfly garden, the cloister Ter Apel, Westerbork, Blauwestad or Germany (with for instance Schloss Dankern and its castle gardens).

From Zwolle: Zwolle - Meppel - Hoogeveen - Assen (A28), take the exit Assen direction Veendam (to the right over the N33). Near the roundabout in Gieten direction Emmen. After 4 km near Gasselte turn left direction Stadskanaal. In Stadskanaal near the traffic-lights, turn right along the canal and the shops, after 2100 meters turn into the Beneluxlaan, with on its right side a busstation. Turn left at the roundabout, after 100 m. on your right, find the Best Western Stadskanaal

From Overijssel: direction Coevorden. Motorway N 34 direction Groningen via Emmen. At Borger turn right to Stadskanaal. In Stadskanaal at the traffic lights straight ahead, first street left and at crossing and roundabout straight ahead. After 100 meters on your righthand side you will find the Best Western Stadskanaal

From Friesland: Drachten - Groningen - Assen (motorway). At Assen direction Veendam. For further description see route 1.
