Reception & Bar staff inside and out very pleasant & helpful. Everyone speaks good English. When we notified the hotel after we got home that we had been overcharged for a breakfast that wasn't taken they promptly refunded the cost without quibbling. Full marks for service. Plenty of toiletries and wardrobe space.
The shuttle bus wasn't running because the driver was ill. Come on only one driver! It's a very long walk to get anywhere. Hotel and older staff still rely on its past reputation and make you feel like intruders. We paid extra for a deluxe room as it was our 40th wedding anniversary and all that could be said is that it was large, clean and expensive. There are restrictions on areas accessible even if they are not in use. In the room the air con was not up to the task, the wall coverings looked as though they'd been put up by an apprentice on their first day it was in need of a little tlc not up to the standard of the public areas. Only one teabag and one coffee sachet on arrival and the inside of the kettle was grim. The outside bar area could do with menus on the tables rather than have to ask for them. You also have to go into the restaurant to view a menu. Put them in the cabins. The information in Dutch was a large volume, in English 1 sheet a4! Even though you are a resident you have to pay for the tour (at a reduced rate we were told) information on this was not in English in the cabin. We didn't, so can't comment. For the price, overall, disappointing
The ship itself - beautiful to look at. Our room which was decked out in its 1950s glory. the toiletries in the bathroom.
Minor - there was a lightbulb out in the bathroom and the pull string from one of the bedside lamps wasn't working. I was somewhat embarrassed to be asked to leave some areas as I hadn't bought a tour ticket. Perhaps better signage would avoid this.
Good sized rooms, excellent staff, wonderful dinner in the Club Room and lots of interesting things to see.
The Ocean Bar was not open and at Breakfast there was no real butter, just some sort of insipid spread.
The hotel is different and nice experience. The room was clean and spacious but then we booked a superior room (i think that is what it was called) The tour was really good, a must do type thing and the staff from beginning to end were so lovely and helpful. Child friendly place.
The service on the Terrence was very slow and a bit chaotic. For a 4 star hotel, i expected the food to be better quality, no fresh OJ, juices were from a carton. Cooked breakfast was cold as there was no heating facility. No coffee on tables, you had to pour it yourself from the drinks counter. Just missed that 4 star extras. the beds were too soft but that maybe a personal thing, as i suffer from back problems, so i didn't sleep at all.
When first opened as a hotel the hotel was run separately from the ship museum, now this has been sorted out and it runs very well. The Club Room restaurant is first class.
Very expensive parking.
The view from the bedroom the beds are comfortable, breakfast I enjoy a lot I must its quite romantic .
My hushband thinks the airco makes way to much noise and u should be able to switch it off completely.
Very confortable room, and unbelievable courteous, friendly personnel.
Expensive parking fee
Everyone should try this hotel
met and greeted by a host at the entrance. there is a ferry around 600 metres away to go into rotterdam centre receptionists very helpful very spacious inside cabin. exceedingly clean. lido restaurant very busy but efficient and courteous made us think we aren't ready to try a 'real' cruise. we liked we were able to get off the ship when we felt like it .
had to wait nearly 2 hours for housekeeping to bring a hairdryer to the room. no hairdryer in the room.
I absolutl liked the ceasar salad I had for lunch and the rooms where very unique and the breakfast was fantastic.
I must say I was quiet dissapointed on how many areas where not set up, looked like there just have been a party the day bevore and nobody cleaned. There are so many nice areas to show of and the tables where staying everywhere, no table cloth on it. In the old swimming pool you need to see the old dirty toiletts, which is really disgusting. There was no music on saturday evening?? Where was the entertainment. The service in the lardo restaurant was extremly bad in the evening (unsuficency has nothing to do with beeing a training restaurant). To bad, the location is top the breakfast in the morning a dream, but the rest a big dissapointment
For a very large ship there were very few facilities. Two restaurants, one so expensive that it was empty and so the other was packed out all the time. The weather was not good enough for the outside bar and there was only one bar open inside - again packed. The room was hot and stuffy so that it was uncomfortable. We decided not to have breakfast on the second day and they refused to change our rate from bed and breakfast to bed only.
We chose the SS Rotterdam because my grandfather used to work for the Holland-America Line in the 1920s, and because we thought the kids would find it fun. It ended up being one of the best parts of our trip, as the accommodation was excellent, the decor was fabulously retro, comfy beds, great food, excellent service, live music at breakfast and a great base for exploring the waterways of Rotterdam. It was like having all the advantages of a cruise without the seasickness. And Rotterdam - what a city! Full of art, culture, music and great food.
Loved it all. If I had to be really picky, they could boost the wi-fi signal. I had signal on my laptop from our room, but my wife's ipad struggled. Also, how about some family cabins? We hired 2 adjacent rooms, but that was an extravagance we would rather have avoided.
very high quality fixtures and fittings well maintained. sun deck a very pleasant place to be and welcoming of guests and friends. friendly, helpful and efficient staff. My initial reservations about the place were dispelled by the second day.
A rather odd mixture of hotel and nostalgia theme park rather disturbed me at first, but later I became rather fond of its oddness and even of the late-night background music playing in the public areas. I think being a bit more upfront about prices onboard would have been helpful for !st time visitors.
The cruiseship was great.
No wifi in the rooms
The restaurants and bars we're really nice. The staff were always friendly and welcoming. The bus and train facilities were regular and reliable. All in all a good experience.
There wasn't a swimming pool and the pictures online looked like it had one.
This ship is amazing, well decorated, clean, staff friendly, good food & drink. Comfortable beds.
You couldn't open a window/porthole in your room & it got a bit stuffy. Air con wasn't great, location a little bit out of town.
The rooms where lovely and spacious
Loads off waiting staff but very poor service, had to send 4 meals back for one thing or another! Give up in the end and eat out!!! Did expect a pool, but it was only a paddling pool
The location. 10-15 minutes walk to a vibrant area of restaurants & cafes. Museums & tram-stop (to the city centre) 20-25 minutes walk. The comfortable, stylish, quiet rooms. Convenient car parking opposite the ship.
The noisy, poorly staffed & poorly organised breakfasts in the Lido restaurant. No complimentary bottled water in the rooms. No 'Do not disturb' signs = being disturbed by chambermaids twice each morning. No swimming pool.
at least it was a nice cruise liner and service was as good as we could expect for that amount of money.
we got an inside cabin, that's more or less uncomfortable unless you like to be in a dungeon. for being in a 'black hole' we spend too much money. if you book there ... only outside cabin!
Location, location, location! Novelty of staying on a ship. Staff in restaurant friendly and service was good. Good shuttle service to transport links.
Reception staff unhelpful with room booking requests.
The bar closed too early and much earlier than previous years. We were at the jazz festival and it closed at 2 a.m. On Sunday night and some of us had only just got back
A very unique experience, taking me back to another era. This ship is beautifully and lovingly restored. The restaurants are first class quality and the staff, including volunteers who organize the tours, are friendly and enthusiastic. Do not miss either of the two tours (the machine room and the passenger/bridge/navigation areas) during your stay here.
There is nothing for me to complain about.
It's nice to sleep on a huge transatlantic cruiser with an interesting past, isn't it? You can make a little tour of the ship. Rooms are comfortable (well, my bed was a bit too soft, but anyways...), you can make your own tea or coffee in the room. I had a nice view over Rotterdam from the bull-eyes of my cabin.
It's much too expensive and the cost of breakfast - 19 euros - is really discouraging. So, not for back-packers, absolutely, but there is little choice in Rotterdam during the North Sea Jazz Festival... When I arrived my reservation seemed to disappear in the computer system and it took some time and assistance of two people from the staff to retrieve it. If you add a routine blocking on your credit card of the amount due for your stay + 100 euros just in case, as if you were a crook who intends to empty the mini-bar and take French leave, it all made a not-very-welcoming start. The location of the hotel looks good on the map since it is in between the city centre and Ahoy, but in fact both are quite far away. However, public transport in Rotterdam is impeccable. There is a bus in front of the ship-hotel which takes you in several minutes to the nearest metro station. Nevertheless, if you come back to the hotel later than midnight, be prepared for a roughly 2 km walk from the metro or take a taxi. Also, on a Sunday morning the buses start running only at 9 a.m.
