We chose to stay in Utrecht as a stop gap for one night as there was no suitable accommodation in Amsterdam owing to our very late decision to go on a city break over the Easter weekend. We knew very little about Utrecht but liked the look of Grand Hotel Karel V, so booked for a night. We had a wonderful time and are delighted with our choice of hotel and destination. The hotel is great - lovely gardens, tasteful rooms, friendly staff and very good restaurants. We didn't venture to the gym and pool. The hotel is very well positioned for the town centre and central station. Both hotel and Utrecht come highly recommended. The bed in the deluxe suit are twin beds pushed together, which is far from ideal for a couple.

We like the friendly and helpful staff, the hotel itself is unique because of its history and lay out, the location is great, quiet, yet close to the center of Utrecht, no need for cars! The rooms and bathrooms are comfortable and clean. Breakfast is a feast.fine We have been guests twice now and will be back.

The staff are friendly, the location is great & the historical building also very interesting with lovely decor. The small gym & pool is great & very clean with good quality fresh clean towels. The breakfast is excellent; a wide range of food of good quality. Room service is reasonable, although not everything we ordered arrived & by the time we realised it was too late to add to the order as the kitchen had closed. The "double bed" was 2 single mattresses (a pet hate of mine) But to make matters worse the duvets were single sized too & were "cheap" polyester filled, not goose down. For a 5 star hotel at this price I would expect better mattress & bedding- especially when we booked a double room as a couple with a small child. The child's bed was not placed in the room before we arrived, even though it was pre booked & I even asked at reception at check in & was advised it was in the room, to turn up to the room & find no child's bed. It was impossible to shower without the water spraying everywhere over the bathroom floor- the door was not secure & it leaked (this is also fairly common in many hotels (I travel a lot for work) The rooms are also not very soundproof- especially between the outside corridor & the bedrooms.

The location and historical ambience are superb. A perfect place with 5 star service to stay for business but even more for city trips. The brasserie is very cosy and worth dining as well.

What an amazing hotel - we travel a lot - but this is one of the top Hotels we have stayed in Europe! Old historic building - with sensitive new additions. Great Staff - nothing is too much trouble - Fantastic dining and set in the most wonderful position - just walk thro' walled gardens and you are in the city centre. I can fault nothing - not cheap!! But worth every penny - we will be returning! Nothing it was perfect

Excellent staff - friendly, courteous without being obtrusive. Very intelligent team. Very comfortable hotel. Grounds well maintained and interesting. (Do you use the pears?) Very good food in brasserie.Interesting displays on history of hotel - rather more information would have been welcome.Very convenient parking. Bed only moderately comfortable.Apparently no option to say do not give us fresh towels every day in interests of environment. Bedroom a little chilly.Very pronounced water ring marks on bedside furniture. Saw a little dust in dining room and china refuse pot on table contained a previous breakfast eater's empty butter pack. Some unwelcome jarring music on tapes played in dining room - must one have background music? I like to listen properly or not at all.None of this is a complaint. It is a very good hotel - but you did ask.

This was a second visit after a relatively short time. Same score across the board. This time round I had lunch in Goeie Louisa, good as usual, but I also enjoyed, with a guest, every aspect of Grand Restaurant Karel v: professional but friendly service (with a smile), excellent cuisine and wine list, beautiful dining room, which the next morning was the venue for a fine and quiet breakfast (fortunately available as early as seven o'clock, even on a Saturday). The large garden is always pleasant for a stroll and the warm autumn sun on Goeie Louise's terrace during my visit was an unexpected extra. A grand hotel and a grand restaurant Karel v .

A most enjoyable two-night stay in this excellent hotel and its historical but sympathetically restored and extended buildings providing all modern facilities to the highest standard. Large garden, including an orchard in fruit at the time of visit. Breakfast (in room) was perfect and Brasserie Goeie Louisa (which I visited many times previously) was very good. Unfortunately no time to visit the restaurant. The hotel is conveniently close to the city centre and within walking distance of the railway station, and apparently has sufficient own parking space. Good value for money on the basis of an unexpected generous promotional offer through Booking.com. A Grand Hotel indeed..

The room was extraordinary! I stayed in a duplex in the Roman wing. Also, the breakfast was superb. While expensive, at 20€, it was worth it. The staff were quite pleasant but not as accommodating of requests as I would expect at a hotel like this. Two major weaknesses: 1. They should switch from single sheet to roll toilet tissue dispenser in the rooms. The former is extremely unsanitary. I could see that the underside of my dispenser was soiled. 2. The beds are not comfortable at all- too low, not firm and not very plush.

Archtecturally interersting, the staff was very friendly, helpful and welcoming, breakfasts were sumptuous, very comfortable room, good to be able to rent bikes. In our room (201) on the first night there was a lot of noise from the water pipes, which was disturbing. We love spas, and would prefer it if the spa facilities were a bit more extensive.

A large number of completely free facilities, such as sunbed, spa, gym and a (small) pool Also, very luxurious rooms: mattrass, towels, bedlinen Just a few small things: There is no WiFi in the rooms. They claim this is because of the thick walls. Also, the pillows are quite small
